Monday blues: Post pride

elephant, animal, humorThis is more or less how I feel after spending a fun weekend in Washington DC, participating in the National Equality March for Unity and Pride. Due to our travels, I didn’t get a chance to include my weekly what’s happening post today.

Scruffy Sunday

PRIDE: Why coming out still matters (to me)

One of my favorite weekly blog posts is something I created more by accident than design – my Thursday morning Vintage Gay posts. I think of this weekly post as my way of keeping Pride alive through out the year.

I grew up in a small town with an even smaller world view. Combine that with the fact that 20+ years ago the Internet wasn’t really around and there were no gay characters on TV or at the movies unless they were mentally ill, depressed or dying of AIDS, and it isn’t that amazing that many LGBT youth like me grew up thinking there was something fundamentally wrong with them.

Fortunately, my impressions of what it meant to be gay changed forever and for the better when three things happened in the late 1990s: access to the Internet, moving to a progressive city with a sizable gay community and Hollywood realizing gay characters could be depicted as funny or happy people (thank you Will & Grace). These changes helped me realize I wasn’t alone or a genetic freak of nature and it is in that context and with that life experience that I created my weekly post “Vintage Gay”. These photos, which capture happy moments in people’s lives from the past, were hidden from view and rarely shared – at least not shared widely enough so a kid like me might see them and know that it really does get better, to paraphrase a great point that can never be stressed enough to gay youth struggling with their own sexual identity and desires to simply fit in.

Happy Pride

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:
I am the beginning of everything. I am the end of time and space. Who or what am I?

Tennis crush: Márton Fucsovics

mancandy, handsome, hunk, tennisI’ve been watching the French Open since the tournament started but I’ll likely miss the biggest matches of the tournament since Sergio and I will be traveling. This year’s tournament has had some amazing matches and some even more dazzling players. Like this Hungarian player, Márton Fucsovics who is currently ranked 148th in the world. Hopefully he can improve his game because I’d love to see more of him on the courts.

How do you say, “More, Please” in Hungarian?

Vintage gay

gay historyI dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Hubway set for major expansion in Boston

Boston’s bike sharing service, The Hubway, continues to thrive as Boston and surrounding communities work to be more bike-friendly. Last week Hubway announced they would be adding more than 70 new bike-rental stations over the next two years (currently there are 127 bike-rental stations) in the city of Boston.

They will focus on opening new stations in unserved and under served Boston neighborhoods like Roslindale, Dorchester and Mattapan. Hubway noted that they would also add additional stations in existing service areas to better handle demand as well as add new stations in Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline.

If you’d like to learn more about Hubway visit their website thehubway.com.

This week on Instagram: kee_fab

gay coupleAfter spending the past few weeks featuring Instagram accounts of professional photographers and the male models that serve as their muse, I thought I’d go back to featuring accounts of friends. This week I’m featuring the Instagram account of a couple who now live here in Boston. Keegan (shown on the right above) is from Atlanta and Fabio (shown on the left above) is from Sardinia. They are a fun and easy-going couple who I always enjoy seeing.

The short video below of them visiting Sardinia this past summer nicely captures their playful side while giving you a glimpse of the beautiful waters of Sardinia – damn I have to get there some day.
