The Week – Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo Gay Night LifeNext month I’ll be visiting friends in Sao Paulo and while we have not made any plans we usually end up going to The Week.  This nightclub has the distinction of being my absolute favorite gay club in the world. I’ve never seen a place that is its equal and doubt I will now that my clubbing days are fewer and fewer.

The Week is a massive night club in Sao Paulo (20,000+ sq ft). In recent years, they have expanded to Rio de Janeiro and Florianopolis.  I thought I’d share one of the Week’s promo videos to give you a taste of nightlife in Brazil. Should you ever find yourself in SP, put going to The Week on your list of “to-do’s”.

Brazil is within sight

One month from today I board a flight to Brazil where I will spend a couple of weeks visiting family and relaxing.

The first week will be with my partner’s family in Belo Horizonte.  Then we will fly down to Florianopolis to relax for almost a week before zipping up to Sao Paulo for our final two nights.  We still have a lot of planning to do including scheduling our flights inside Brazil and making reservations in Floripa. Making these travel plans is getting me excited to revisit Brazil.  Do you have any trips on the horizon?

Brazil state of mind

I almost never travel in the summer. I wait all year for New England’s summer days filled with sun and warmth. However, with summer now a thing of the past, my mind turns to travel. It has been a few years since my last visit to Brazil, but plans are in the making to rectify that.

Os Gemos mural in Boston

boston public artMy enthusiasm for public art and funding these initiatives is not always shared, but I think commissioning public art installations is essential to any city and community.  So I was thrilled to see the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA-Boston) have two famous street artists from Brazil create larger than life murals in the city of Boston.

boston public artOs Gemos – identical twin brothers and street artists from Brazil – are currently hosting their first museum show in the United States at the ICA-Boston. While the show is here in Boston this large temporary mural will dominate Dewey Square in Boston’s financial district.

You may read more about the installation and view a slide show of the creation of the mural as well as the show at the ICA-Boston here.

Sao Paulo phone booth public art campaign

call parade100 completely useless or recently vandalized phone booths in São Paulo, Brazil, were given to talented artists who had free reign to turn them into anything they like as part of an ongoing public art project “Call Parade” sponsored by Brazilian telecommunications company Vivo.  Check out the complete list of phone booths, learn more about the artists who created the public art and find out where the phone booth is on Google Maps here.

Carnival – Rio de Janeiro

Each year Rio de Janeiro hosts the world’s largest party when they host Carnival. Today is Fat Tuesday – the last day of Carnival.  With all due respect to New Orleans’, Mardi Gras, it is unfair to even compare the two celebrations.   Its like comparing professional baseball players to your local town league.  Rio’s celebration runs around the clock for four days, is broadcast worldwide and draws viewers from every continent. Sorry New Orleans – when you can measure your viewers in the hundreds of millions (let alone billions) then we can talk. Enjoy these photos from this year’s celebration.

Travel: My drug of choice

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”
– Mark Twain

I love to travel, and I’ve been very fortunate to visit many places. One of my favorite countries to visit is Brazil. Its an amazing country both exotic and familiar for American travelers. The country has the can-do, entrepreneurial spirit many Americans identify with and like the U.S. – Brazil is a giant melting pot of people, races and religions. However, its history is more closely aligned with Portugal and the Latin speaking nations of Europe providing a uniquely exotic personality that thoroughly romances you. The picture above is a breathtaking image of Rio de Janeiro; one of the most beautiful places I’ve had the advantage to visit.

What are some of your favorite destinations, and where do you dream of traveling some day?

Rio de Janeiro welcomes gay travelers

Rio de Janeiro is one of my favorite cities in the entire world; it is easily one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited. It is also an intensely sexual city since most men and women seem to walk everywhere in the tiniest bathing suits I’ve ever seen.

Gay life in Brazil and especially in Rio is alive and thriving. To welcome gay tourists Riotur joined with Rio de Janeiro City Hall and made this video to show why the city is a favorite destination for lesbian and gay tourists. If you are planning to visit Rio or have any questions about this magnificent city (or Brazil in general) please feel free to send me a question and I’ll try my best to answer you.

Interesting Information about Rio
– First discovered in 1502 and founded in 1565
– 7,000,000 people live in Rio de Janeiro
– In 2014 Rio will host World Cup
– In 2016 Rio will host the Summer Olympics
– This is one of BosGuy’s favorite places in the entire world

Brazilian funk

Considering the responses I received from my last post, I thought I would stick with the Brazilian theme and include these 6 teenagers. I initially posted this video back in December 2008, in my entry I love the holidays.

Check out this funny 2-minute video entitled “Cueca Funk”. I have a bit of a crush on the guy in the royal blue boxers on the left. FYI – Cueca is Portuguese for underwear.

Brazil street art

Earlier today I received an e-mail inquiring why I don’t have any pictures of me on my blog. I pointed out that I have several in my blog header, but upon further inspection realized I had not included any pictures in posts in quite awhile. Let’s just say I’m a bit camera shy. Here’s a shot of me goofing off a couple of years ago the last time I was in Rio de Janeiro.

Mas Que Nada

The clip below is courtesy of YouTube and includes one of my all-time favorite Brasilian songs, “Mas Que Nada”. The Black Eyed Peas remade the Sergio Mendes song a few years ago and gave it new life.

If you’ve never heard the song or this particular version check it out. I prefer to imagine that I’m on the beach in Ipanema while listening to the samba beat play out but it sounds good no matter where you happen to be.

Carnival in Brazil starts with a bang

While many Americans are familiar with Mardi Gras in New Orleans, it is purely minor leagues as compared to the celebrations that happen through out many of the Carribean and South American nations.

Clearly Carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro put all other parties to shame. Each samba school develops elaborate floats that are several stories tall and include thousands of dancers / revellers who are all choreographed. Celebrations through out Brasil have started – check out some of the amazing photographs Boston.com has posted for Carnival 2009 by linking here.

I love the holidays

The Christmas holiday is fast approaching and today is really the last day of work I have until the new year. I am so excited that I will have the next 12 days off it makes me forget how freezing cold it is here in Boston right now and want to dance.

However, since it is well documented that I have no rhythym, I’ll let the guys from Brasil in this video do all the dancing for me. We both seem to share a sense of excitement and contentment at the moment – they are just more expressive and better at showing this through dance.

You can see scores of Brasilians doing this and variations of this dance on YouTube if you type in the search feature, “Cueca Funk”. This particular video which was posted on YouTube more than a year ago has had more than 800,000 hits. I can see why… eat your heart out Dancing with the Stars.

This video was also recently posted on a blog I enjoy reading, Wicked Gay Blog, entitled “Parar relembrar porque amamos o Brasil” which translates to “to remember why we love Brasil”… enough said.

Some of my favorite destinations

I recently returned from a two week visit to Brazil and had a great time so I added my comments about the place we stayed (Casas Brancas) to Trip Advisor. I use the website to help me plan my travels by reading recent comments left by travellers and to validate information I read on the web.

After I left my comments Trip Advisor asked me to rank some of my favorite places. I don’t know that I would really rank any of the destinations below as better than another. Each destination has a special place in my heart and provide me with some wonderful memories. Actually, the list is too short to really encompass all the places I’ve been which I would happily return to, but I thought I’d include it here on my blog since Trip Advisor makes it so easy to share. Perhaps in the future I’ll look back and feel compelled to add new destinations I’ve yet to visit.
