Thursday, February 26th the Boston Ballet’s 51st season continues with the return of Val Caniparoli’s ballet, Lady of the Camellias. The production is set to the brilliant music of Chopin, and will be performed by the Boston Ballet Orchestra.
About Lady of the Camellias: Written by Alexander Dumas, the novel La Dame aux Camelias was published in 1848 Paris. Since then, the tragic story of the courtesan Marguerite and her lover, Armand, has captured audiences with its heartbreaking and compelling tale of love, redemption, and loss. More than 16 different stage adaptations have been performed across theaters in Paris, London, and Broadway since 1852. The story inspired Guiseppe Verdi’s famed opera La Traviata (1853), and has been the subject for many films including Camille starring Greta Garbo (1936) and the blockbuster Moulin Rouge (2001).
Always wanted to learn to dance? Looking for a different way to develop long, lean muscle tone or maybe you just need a distraction from winter?
My friend Christopher will be teaching a new five-week course where you can learn the fundamentals of classical ballet technique. Taking the class will help you build strength and is open to all – no previous dancing experience is necessary.
Sound interesting? Give the class a try and while you are at it, grab a friend or two to join you. Classes beginFebruary 27, 2015 at Boston Ballet School’s Newton Studio and on March 7, 2015 at Boston Ballet School’s Boston Studio in the South End. The course includes a free ticket to Boston Ballet’s Shades of Sound on March 28.
In an attempt to maintain my blog’s “wicked gay” rating, I thought it was time to post this Single Ladies choreography chart. The timing with the pending Valentine’s Day weekend is purely coincidental.
Are you one of those guys who doesn’t like going to museums? Do you find them stuffy and boring? Maybe this exhibit in Los Angeles is more your speed.
Cuban artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’, takes the male body out of the gay club and into the museum. The installation at UCLA’s Hammer Museum consists of a lit-up platform, that is empty most of the time except for five minutes a day when a go-go dancer randomly appears. Unscheduled and unannounced, the performer dances to the music blaring from his headphones, inaudible to the guests at the museum. Not your typical installation for sure.
Thanks to Oscar Raymundo and his blog Confessions of a Boy Toy for bringing this story to my attention.
Over the past 5 years DJ Sean Johnson has been the host of Fur and Gold, an alternative nightlife event for the Boston LGBTQIA community.
Tomorrow’s Fur and Gold will be his final party before he packs his bags and moves to Portland, OR. For more information about Fur and Gold visit their Facebook page: Fur and Gold.
All the fun takes place at 14 Pi Aly located just a couple blocks from Downtown Crossing and also near the State Street T Station. Doors open at 10PM.
Have you seen Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker? Do you love a bargain? Then you are going to love the fact that The Welcoming Committee (TWC) has secured tickets to the Nutcracker on Tuesday, December 9th. They have 100 seats (first and second row – front balcony) that normally sell for ~$150 each. TWC is selling them as part of their “Takeover the Nutcracker” for $68 each.
Tickets only last while seats remain available so quickly chat with friends or surprise your significant other with tickets to the show. I’ve seen the performance, and I can assure you that if you are not yet in the holiday spirit this show will help get you there. The sets and choreography are aaaaaaahhhmazing.

After the show join TWC for drinks at the Avery Bar at the Ritz Carlton. Shame on you if you’ve not already been and you let this opportunity pass you by.
The Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker opens later this week on Friday after Thanksgiving and will run through Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Sergio and I had the opportunity to see this production which first premiered in 2012 with new sets and costumes and we loved it.
If you haven’t been before I’d suggest that you check it out. You just may be surprised by how much you really enjoy both this classic story and the athleticism and grace of The Boston Ballet.
Tomorrow (October 30th), The Boston Ballet will present the world premiere of Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake, featuring magnificent new costumes and sets.
For fans of classic ballet, Swan Lake is a must see. Get your tickets and plan an evening out with a friend or someone special. If you need tips on where to grab a dinner or drinks after the performance, I’m happy to provide suggestions.
The current issue of Metrosource has a really interesting article about BalletBoyz, an all male ballet dance company that is touring parts of the United States starting later this month. Sadly the talented troupe will not be stopping in Boston.
Founded by two classically trained ballet dancers from London’s Royal Ballet School, the company now consists of ten dancers. Metrosource writer, Matt Gurry, describes the troupe as “committed to their work, while not sexual, flaunts an unabashed, athletic homoeroticism. They are young. They are brave. This new crop indeed struts like Greek Gods. But above all, they are indisputably talented.”
BalletBoyz will be coming to Philadelphia, Madison, Santa Barbara, Palm Desert, Portland and Los Angeles. For more information about the BalletBoyz and to purchase tickets, visit the website.
Later this month (October 30th to be exact), The Boston Ballet will present the world premiere of Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake. The production features magnificent new costumes and sets.

Last year Sergio and I attended this and had a blast.
If you happen to be watching this season of SYTYCD you are already familiar with the beautiful (but very tough judge) Misty Copeland. Misty is best known as a soloist ballerina for the American Ballet Theatre, but this new commercial from Under Armor is sure to increase her fame and change people’s perception of ballet. More than an art form, Under Armour’s commercial showcases the beautiful athleticism of ballet in their new I Will I Want ad campaign.
In addition to the inspirational message of never giving up, perhaps it will inspire you to check out Boston Ballet’s 2014-2015 season. Information about performance dates and tickets can be found online here.
