Free Fun Fridays start later this week

Highland FoundationThe Highland Street Foundation is sponsoring Free Fun Fridays again this summer, starting this Friday, June 23rd.  The program is designed to increase access and enrichment opportunities for children and families throughout Massachusetts during the summer months.

Starting this Friday, and each Friday through the end of August, multiple sites will be free – thanks to the generosity of The Highland Street Foundation.

This week enjoy the following free venues: The Mary Baker Eddy Library (and Maparium), The Sports Museum, The Peabody Essex Museum and more. For more details visit here: Free Fun Fridays – June 23.

Below is a listing of all the participating venues through out the summer so you can make plans to enjoy one or more of these opportunities.

Shakespeare on the Common: Romeo & Juliet

bosarts, shakespeare on the common, boston theaterIn July the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) will return for their annual free performances of William Shakespeare on the Boston Common.

This year’s production, Romeo & Juliet, is certain to draw large crowds so plan ahead and add this to your summer bucket list. The CSC production opens on Wednesday, July 19th and will run for approximately 3 weeks on the Boston Common.  Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8pm; Sundays at 7pm; with one 3pm matinee performance on Saturday, August 5.

Lawn on D is now open

Lawn on D opened Monday, May 1, 2017 

One of Boston’s coolest parks, Lawn on D, opened this Monday, May 1, 2017 and as with each year it seems like the park offers something new to attract people to this patch of green surrounded by concrete.

Probably the biggest change (for the better) is that the Lawn on D now has a liquor license through their full-service bar, starting today, Thursday, May 4th. No surprise that the addition of alcohol has also led to an upgrade and changes with food options so check it out this weekend.

Large Chess Set at Hotel Brava in Buzios, Brazil

Look for new games to play like giant chess – perhaps like the set Sergio and I played when we were in Buzios, Brazil.  Additionally Lawn on D will also have lawn checkers and a HUGE version of Connect Four.

SoWa Art Walk is May 6-7

Boston South End Art WalkThis coming weekend, Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7  be sure to check out the annual SoWa Art Walk from 11:00AM to 5:00PM both days.  The art walk will coincide with the SoWa Open, Vintage and Food Market which is now also open both Saturday and Sunday.

The SoWa Art Walk is really an amazing and fun way to spend a few hours of your day perusing art in a variety of mediums and includes hundreds of local artists and artisans (many in their studios located at 450, 460 and 600 Harrison Avenue,  35, 49 and 59 Wareham Street and 46 Waltham Street).

Institute of Contemporary Art BostonThe Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Boston is free on Thursday evenings, starting at 5PM. I realized it had been a while since I last posted this so I thought I’d remind those of you who may be looking for something a little different to do after work.  The good news is that since I last posted this reminder in the spring of 2015 a bunch of new restaurants and bars have opened in the neighborhood giving you several options after strolling through the the ICA.

Museum of Fine Arts BostonThe Museum of Fine Arts celebrates the Year of the Rooster Saturday with their annual Lunar New Year Celebration, featuring free admission all day, music and lion dance performances, martial arts demonstrations and art-making activities.

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston is open from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday.

The Theater Offensive presents St. Sebastian Festival

gay bostonNext Saturday The Theater Offensive will present Boston’s first-ever Saint Sebastian Festival (Festival de San Sebastian), full of  folklore music & dancing, a community parade, “cabezudos” (giant dancing head puppets), theater, poetry, performance, artisan crafts, salsa music, and a live Saint Sebastian installation.

The event will take place at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 West Newton St in Boston, on January 28, 2017 from 4-10pm. For more information about this free event open to the public, click here.

Shakespeare Unauthorized opens at the Boston Public Library

BPLAre you a fan of Shakespeare? The Boston Public Library is hosting a major gallery exhibition about William Shakespeare that opens today, Thursday, October 13th on the first floor of the McKim building in Copley Square.

The exhibit which runs through March 31, 2017 includes rare first and early editions of some of his most loved plays including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice. Visitors will experience Shakespeare in his original language and spelling, just as he would have been read by book lovers and theater-goers hundreds of years ago.

South End Open Studios is this weekend

south-end-open-studios-bostonIn 1986 a group of artists at the Boston Center for the Arts invited friends and neighbors into their studios to view their art. As more artists became interested in the event, the United South End Artists was formed, and the South End Open Studios weekend came into being.

Today the South End Open Studios includes a dozen studio buildings and more than 250 artists, encompassing all of Boston’s South End neighborhood. This year will mark their 30th anniversary so come over to the South End.

Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival

berklee-beantown-jazz-festival-2016I don’t know how I missed this in my weekly post, “What’s Happening This Week” so I wanted to give the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival a shout out.

Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival is free on Saturday, Sept. 24th

Billed as Boston’s biggest block party, this annual event is a free, outdoor concert that is worth checking out. The festival features jazz, Latin, blues, funk, and groove performances. The festival offers world-class music on three stages, phenomenal food and drink, arts, crafts, and unique gifts.

This year’s entertainment includes Al Jarreau, Marcus Santos Brazilian Drum Group and Dan Moretti. For more information on all the musicians who will be playing check out the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival performance schedule.
