Washington D.C. Pride and the National Equality & Pride March

This weekend Sergio and I visited our friends David and Mark (shown above). Once upon a time these two wonderful men lived in Boston but they moved away and now Washington D.C. is now their home. The opportunity to see our friends, experience D.C. Pride for the first time and participate in the National Equality & Pride March on Sunday, June 11th made for a fantastic weekend. I’m also happy to say we weren’t the only ones from Boston; nearly everywhere we went we saw guys from Boston participating in D.C. Pride and the march. Washington DC Pride, gay DCDavid and Mark were the consummate hosts. We were able to enjoy the D.C. Pride parade from 17th Street for an hour or so before going to their friend Rodrigo’s beautiful condo which had a very large roof deck affording great views of the parade and also happened to have a table full of cold adult beverages.

D.C. Pride was really excellent and was the perfect appetizer for the main course (so to speak), the National Equality & Pride March, the following day.  I might be biased, but I thought Sergio had the best t-shirt of the entire march. Below Sergio’s photo are two nice guys who also gave me a good laugh with their Absolutely Fabulous inspired t-shirts. Gay DC, National Equality & Pride MarchGay DC, National Equality & Pride MarchGay DC, National Equality & Pride MarchFollowing all our marching the group above which are all friends of David and Mark from D.C. and Charlotte did what all gay men do best on a Sunday afternoon – we went to brunch. Our trip was capped off with a very relaxing dinner at another friend’s home in a leafy neighborhood of D.C. All told the weekend was an amazing time and while I have no idea how many people marched on Sunday, it was a wonderful experience we will remember.

PRIDE: Why coming out still matters (to me)

One of my favorite weekly blog posts is something I created more by accident than design – my Thursday morning Vintage Gay posts. I think of this weekly post as my way of keeping Pride alive through out the year.

I grew up in a small town with an even smaller world view. Combine that with the fact that 20+ years ago the Internet wasn’t really around and there were no gay characters on TV or at the movies unless they were mentally ill, depressed or dying of AIDS, and it isn’t that amazing that many LGBT youth like me grew up thinking there was something fundamentally wrong with them.

Fortunately, my impressions of what it meant to be gay changed forever and for the better when three things happened in the late 1990s: access to the Internet, moving to a progressive city with a sizable gay community and Hollywood realizing gay characters could be depicted as funny or happy people (thank you Will & Grace). These changes helped me realize I wasn’t alone or a genetic freak of nature and it is in that context and with that life experience that I created my weekly post “Vintage Gay”. These photos, which capture happy moments in people’s lives from the past, were hidden from view and rarely shared – at least not shared widely enough so a kid like me might see them and know that it really does get better, to paraphrase a great point that can never be stressed enough to gay youth struggling with their own sexual identity and desires to simply fit in.

Happy Pride

Tennis crush: Márton Fucsovics

mancandy, handsome, hunk, tennisI’ve been watching the French Open since the tournament started but I’ll likely miss the biggest matches of the tournament since Sergio and I will be traveling. This year’s tournament has had some amazing matches and some even more dazzling players. Like this Hungarian player, Márton Fucsovics who is currently ranked 148th in the world. Hopefully he can improve his game because I’d love to see more of him on the courts.

How do you say, “More, Please” in Hungarian?

2017 Heels for Hope is a huge success

Boston Pride, BAGLYCongratulations to BAGLY which received more than $9,000 from last night’s 4th annual Heels for Hope. This ‘unofficial’ Boston Pride event has changed venues three times in four years, and moving the event to Club Cafe afforded the organizers with an opportunity to raise significantly more money for BAGLY: Boston’s Alliance of Gay & Lesbian Youth.

Special thanks to Michael Labrecque who conceived of this idea four years ago and has made H4H one of the most fun events of Boston Pride week. Below are a few photos I snapped while socializing. Apologies there are not more and that some of these aren’t as nice as Sergio’ photo atop this post. I lack his skills.

Red Hot 2018 calendar “British Boys” teaser video

StandUp foundation, 2018 calendarShooting has started for the 2018 Red Hot calendar. Now in its fifth year, the organizers of the annual celebration of ginger men shared a video trailer of a shoot in London along with a new Kickstarter fundraiser to make sure it becomes a reality.

This year’s theme is ‘British Boys’ and proceeds raised will help the fight against homophobic bullying by raising money for the Ben Cohen STANDUP foundation. Below I’ve included the YouTube teaser video if you’ve yet to see it.

Heels for Hope tonight at Club Cafe

boston pride, BAGLYEach Pride there is that one party or event that exceeds expectations and floods Facebook with photos.  For the past three years that event during Boston Pride (in my opinion) has been Heels for Hope.

When Michael Labrecque and his friends started this event / fundraiser to help raise funds for Boston Alliance for Gay and Lesbian Youth (BAGLY) they had no idea how popular this ‘unofficial’ Boston Pride event would be. This year the event has moved to Club Cafe and will take place tonight. You can buy a pair of heels if you’re in a pinch at Dorothy’s Boutique on Mass Ave and head over to Club Cafe. For more information check out the Facebook page, Heels for Hope.
