Men of Twitter: Holiday edition

Each Monday I post profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following.  I refer to these weekly posts as Men of Twitter. Each day this week I’ve decided I would feature a handful of the men from this past year.  Take a moment to check out these profiles and follow if on Twitter.

WillFennell – Will is a grooming guru who lives in Sydney.  His good looks are what initially caught my attention. His charm is what has kept it.

Kenneth212 – Kenneth was featured this past summer.  I’ve been a long time fan of his blog Kenneth in the 212 and think you may enjoy it too.

TheMaverickMen – Are one of only a handful of couples I’ve actually featured. Cole (left) and Hunter (right) live here in Boston and are fun to follow.

What is a bear?

Like many subcultures, the GLBT community has come up with names that are widely recognized within our community but have failed to work their way into popular culture.  For the sake of people who are confused by these terms, I’ll show you two pictures.  You tell me which one you think is the bear.

PHOTO1:  PHOTO 2:

If you guessed that PHOTO 2 is the bear then you’d be correct. What is a Bear you may find yourself asking? In its broadest definition it is the freedom to be comfortable with your appearance and a celebration of your body no matter its shape or size.   As a result you’ll often see men who identify as “bears” that are quite large and hairy.

Some – like my friend who I’ve included above  – are actually very muscular and project images of masculinity through their grooming and appearance. You can learn more about this subculture within the gay community by linking here.

AndyTowle – Andy was featured early in 2011. I am a long-time admirer of his blog, Towleroad and often see him in the summer in Provincetown.

LargeTony – Tony lives in Tennessee. He is a painter by trade and a writer at his core. His blog West of Mayberry is one of my favorite reads.

MarkGotham – Mark splits his time between NYC, Boston and DC and is a Twitt-aholic.  He’s friendly and easy to chat with on Twitter.

ChrisNogiec – Chris is a Fitness Expert in Boston who I originally featured in April.  Everytime I see Chris I have ab envy.

xxCharlieJ – Charlie is from Michigan and is a great guy to chat with on Twitter.  He too has abs that just won’t quit – I think that’s an eight-pack.

Str8Cam – Jeff was featured this past summer.  The fact that he has an amazing upper body and is easy on the eyes made him a natural for Men of Twitter.

AussieBrenton – Brenton lives in Sydney Australia. He’s a sweetheart. He also happens to write an excellent blog called, Aussielicious.

FLHotty1 – I met Will in Provincetown, MA over Fourth of July weekend.  He proved to be as handsome in person as his picture (and just as nice).

TheMoInMontrose – Alan lives in Houston and is one of the nicest guys I’ve met on Twitter. He’s easy going and an all round great guy. Check him out.

Gay community apologizes to Amy Koch for ruining her marriage

Former Minnesota Senate majority leader Amy Koch has been a vocal opponent of gay marriage. She tried (unsuccessfully) to amend her state constitution to add language that would make marriage between a man and a woman. Last week this powerful politician announced she’d be stepping down as the majority leader and would not seek re-election in November.

What was the cause of her departure from the State Senate?

The Minnesota Post reports that she was confronted with allegations of an “inappropriate relationship” with a male Senate staffer and those allegations were presented to Senate leaders by other Senate staff members.  To further compound the issue, this woman who has been on a crusade to “Save Marriage” apparently is already married – and her philandering apparently was ongoing while she was routinely campaigning to amend the Minnesota Constitution to ensure same sex marriage could never happen in her state.

A sudden case of karma biting Koch in the ass.

One Minneapolis resident took Sen. Koch’s transgressions personally.  Since he’s gay, he assumed her marriage’s failure must have something to do with him so he wrote her a letter expressing his sympathies for the break up and acknowledges his role as a gay man.  I’ve included an excerpt from his letter below for you.

On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community’s successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage. We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love has cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry.

OMG: The They Fit Kit

Nik over at My Bizarre world blog was jokingly listing a few Christmas gifts in his post, “Gift ideas”. Among the gifts listed was the FitKit.  I thought it was hilarious and figured you may feel the same.

The site claims it is introducing the world’s first custom-fit condoms with 95 different sizes for your maximum pleasure & comfort.  I’m not 100% convinced that one would need such customization, but I think its a genius marketing move.  One thing that seems to always sell is sex.

Unfortunately, the site is in the UK and at the moment they can only “tailor” condoms for those in the E.U. but they do encourage you to reach out to them and if you like you can print off the “ruler” they provide (I’ve included a snap shot to the left).

Check out to the official “TheyFit” website by linking here.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter.  Leave them a nice comment and start following on Twitter.

TheDaveyWavey – This native New Englander has some gypsy blood in him, and I have enjoyed following him on his adventures recently to NYC and Hawaii. However, my favorite post on his blog, Break The Illusion, was when he tried vegemite while visiting Australia.  Dave’s blog is all about affirmation and helping to make the world a better place.  He also markets his own apparel and has a fitness site complete with daily work out routines.  You can keep up with all his activities on Facebook and Twitter. #LoveHim

AaronHoff – Aaron is a 25 year old Michigan native who has a penchant for discretely flashing his derrière in his Twitter profile pics.  This ‘cheeky’ guy moved to San Francisco in the fall from DC.  To help pay the bills he is someone’s “sexretary”. His words not mine (I told you he’s cheeky).  Aaron is one of the funniest guys I follow.  An example of a recent tweet is “The trainer broke whatever my ‘getting into the car’ muscles are.” #CheekyTweeter

BrianJMoylan – You may recognize Brian as one of the staff writers for Gawker.com.  In Brian’s own words, “I grew up in the great state of Connecticut, but now I live in beautiful Midtown Manhattan with the rest of the world’s actors and homosexuals.” Moylan also Tweets under the pseudonym @FleshbotBrian for a naughty site that would likely appeal to a number of my readers. #NaughtyWriter

Santa Speedo Run video makes the rounds

Boston’s Santa Speedo Run, which took place this past Saturday is always one of my favorite posts and this year it proved to be a favorite of gay bloggers  as well.  Thank you to Wicked Gay Blog, DanNation, and Back2Stonewall for quickly reposting the video over the weekend.

Last night I found out that Towleroad which had posted my 2010 video gave me a shout out as well and posted the Santa Speedo Run video, causing my humble blog to see its traffic nearly triple in traffic.

Thank you to WGB, DanNation, Back2Stonewall and Towleroad.  If you happen to see other bloggers posting this video, please let me know in the comments section so I may send them a quick thank you.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter. If so inclined, leave these guys a nice comment and start following on Twitter. BsideBlog – The face behind the blog is Ben Mandelker.  He is an LA-based screenwriter (and blogger) originally from the Empire State (NY) who spends his spare time watching TV, cooking food, and discovering crazy hole-in-the-wall ethnic haunts in the city of angels.  Ben claims his life is boring but he’s not beyond name dropping (check out his Twitter profile).  You can also check Ben out online at his blog bsideblog.com. #WestCoastBloggah

Philhamzik -This nice, young man is what we in Boston refer to as “wicked smart“.  Phil is currently an MIT graduate student, studying organic chemistry (told ya he’s brilliant). He is so completely passionate about his interests, I think you too will be quite taken by the young New Yorker (now Bostonian) if you follow him on Twitter.  In addition to his interests in wine, food and fitness he claims to make an amazing margarita #Arriba

Hari_Mac – Hari was born and raised in the UK, but his handsome profile is the product of an interesting heritage, half Greek Cypriot and half Irish.  You can ask Hari which half of him is which 😉  Hari will soon get a taste of what life in America is like  since he’s moving to D.C. NYC as part of a 3-month internship.  Wish him luck as he concludes his studies and for those who happen to live in the D.C. area NYC – extend Hari a warm welcome.  #PeaceOut

Have a great weekend

BosGuy and Santa’s helper hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Boston Santa Speed Run this weekend

The Santa Speedo Run is Saturday, December 10th at 1PM on Boylston Street in the Back Bay. Be sure to enjoy this holiday tradition which started here in Boston back in 2000 and has since spread to cities all over the world.  I’ll be posting photos and tweeting from the event.

Gay rights are human rights

Do elections matter? To quote an infamous American politician, “You betcha!” Yesterday, Hillary Clinton made news when she addressed the United Nations in Geneva  and publicly declared the US will fight discrimination against gay and lesbians abroad by using foreign aid and diplomacy to encourage reform.  Do I think that Saudi Arabia will stop beheading Gay men? I doubt it, but I do believe her and think this is more than just rhetoric.

Can you imagine this change in policy if John McCain won the last Presidential election? I can’t.  When Hillary Clinton says to the UN, “Being gay is not a western invention, it is a human reality” it sends a message that being gay is okay to millions of men and women living in nations where they are persecuted, bullied, beaten and killed.

Did you know in more than 80 countries it is illegal to be gay?  Source

Yard work

Quick, does anyone have a house out in the country some place? I suddenly have this overwhelming need to have some yard work done and desperately need a yard.

Come to think of it, I think I need a place somewhere down South because I’d like to stipulate that the yard work be done without a shirt.  I’ll make delicious homemade lemonade to ensure this young man stays hydrated.

I’m thoughtful like that.
