dBar Harvest Tea Dance

As expected, the dbar Tea Dance on Sunday, November 13th attracted a large and friendly crowd.  It was a gorgeous fall evening and many people preferred to cocktail in the open air of dBar’s patio, but it was a bit too chilly for me to spend much time there since I opted to only wear a t-shirt.

“Gay Jim” from KISS 108 FM helped keep everyone in good spirits with one dance song after another and the bar staff seemed to be pouring drinks at the speed of light limiting the amount of time you had to wait.

Thank you dBar for another great Tea Dance.

The stories of these men are moving testaments of what it means to be gay and challenges stereotypes we all have.  The hard cover book is 224 pages with 100 full color photographs and retails for $45.00.

For more information about the signing call the COOP at (617) 499-2000.

Same sex relationships (by the numbers)

It is easy to focus on the negative or feel frustrated that perceptions are not changing fast enough, but with regards to acceptance of the GLBT community and recognizing same sex relationships, this would be foolish.  Of course, there is a lot of progress that needs to be achieved, but rarely on issues is time such an enemy to those who oppose recognizing the rights of our community.  Take a moment to consider the progress made in the last decade.

10% – (Actually slightly more.) The percentage of states in the US that currently allow same sex marriage.  They are as follows: Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, and as of June this year – New York.  In addition, Washington D.C. allows same sex marriage.  One decade ago no state recognized same sex marriages.

46% – The percentage of Americans who support same sex couples marrying (a decade ago this was 11%).  New polls on marriage equality in 7 more states show mostly positive results for marriage equality advocates.

60% – The number of Fortune 500 companies currently offering same sex work benefits, including health coverage to their employees.  This represents 100%+ increase over the number of Fortune 500 companies that offered same sex work benefits a decade ago.

80% – Current estimates from the US Census Bureau suggest there are now slightly fewer than 650,000 same sex households in the United States; an 80% jump from a decade ago.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter.

If so inclined, leave them a nice comment and start following on Twitter.

AnthonyPalazolo – This handsome 20-something is personal trainer and model who splits his time between Los Angeles and Seattle.  This buff Italian-American has appeared in various magazines and underwear / swimwear campaigns.  He’s currently preparing to do his first fitness magazine shoot in February 2012. Heads up to the men in Hillcrest as he’s contemplating a move to San Diego next year, but beware Anthony is already taken (no surprise there).  #BuffItalian

RodBeto – A.K.A. Rodrigo is originally from Mexico City but has spent the last 10 years traveling the world and performing for Disney on Ice.  A three-time National Champion figure skater, he has adopted Boston as his new home and is starting a new chapter in his life as a skating coach.  I wish this friendly guy luck with his career and would like to welcome him to Boston.  Rodrigo’s tweets vacillate between English and Spanish.  #sweetNsexy

Mick_Fanning – For a second week in a row, an Aussie has caught my attention and been posted as a #MenOfTwitter.  This 30-something is a professional surfer who is a two-time world champion in his sport.  He currently resides in Puerto Rico but travels the world.  Like me you can live vicariously through his tweets and some of the amazing photos he regularly includes. #EasyOnTheEyesAussie

SouthernBloke – Refers to the very handsome, Lloyd Jones who is from Sydney Australia but currently resides in Melbourne Australia.  Like many of his countrymen he left his country for a few years, moving to London in his early 20s where he ended up working as a PA to the producer of the The King’s Speech as well as working at Discovery Channel.  His story gets even more interesting, but you can find out more by checking out his blog, here.  Sorry guys, this charming guy with piercing blue eyes is currently taken.  #AwesomeAussie

JonathanAB – I know remarkably little about this handsome South African, but I’ve been enjoying following Jonathan so much I knew I wanted to feature his Twitter profile. His profile photo on Twitter will confirm that Jonathan is a gym rat who spends much of his free time at his favorite Virgin Active Health Club in Cape Town. #hotNhandsome

ItsLikeMe_And – This handsome guy with the ambiguous Twitter handle is named Anderson Gomes. Anderson lives in Sao Paulo and owns an events business.  He is a Twitter adict with more than 30,000 tweets posted (both in Portuguese and English).  Interested in Brazil? Check out Anderson and for those in S.P. who may follow me – be advised this handsome 27-year old is single.  #GostosoBrasiliero

Are you looking for an active top or bottom?

You know that there is a gay marketing executive somewhere within T.J. Maxx who laughed their ass off when he / she approved these signs to be posted in their store.  I mean come on…

Bigots prefer to remain anonymous

According to the Advocate Magazine, the  Seattle Weekly has posted on the Internet a previously secret list of more than 100,000 people who signed a petition that tried to overturn domestic partnerships in Washington.  After the contentious vote (which failed), the group that organized the petition, Protect Marriage Washington, tried to keep the petitioners’ names private, but a judge ruled earlier this month the names would have to become public.

This story reminds me of the hateful petitions that turned up in Massachusetts back in 2003 after the State Supreme Court ruled banning Same Sex marriage illegal and conservative groups started petitions to have gay marriage brought to the ballot.  A local non-profit called Know Thy Neighbor started publishing the names of people who signed these petitions. Despite the best efforts of conservative groups to try and keep these names secret, every court sided with Know Thy Neighbor.

The morale of the story is, you are entitled to your opinion but your neighbor is also entitled to know because bigotry tends to shrivel and whither by the light of day.  So I say cheers to the Washington State court that ruled these names could be made public.

Personal Note: The image above was taken outside the MA State house.  I was there – not in the picture, but I was there and met that sick, demented man so I always like to post this photo because it reminds me of what hate looks like.

rschulteison7 – Ryan is a local celebrity of sorts since he works for one of the major news channels in Boston.  He is often spotted around town, and although I’ve never talked to this Milwaukee native, he has a friendly and easy going reputation.  Ryan can thank his attractive and fun colleague Susan Tran for suggesting him as a Men of Twitter. I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of it previously but he’s certainly worthy – thanks Susan. #HunkyBroadcaster

Ogracia – Oscar first got my attention because his Twitter profile pics tend to show off his muscled torso.  However, there’s much more to this guy than washboard abs. He teaches Civil Law at the University of Barcelona, and has a Post Degree in Civil Law.  His tweets range from casual conversation to comments about music, politics, technology, and sports.  Oscar is very friendly and a great guy to follow. #SexyNSmart

MJKilgore – Originally from Indiana, Matthew is more than just a pretty face. Matthew has performed on Broadway and all over the world.  He often tweets about the work he’s doing and things he’s passionate about such as  the arts and life in NYC since moving back.  He volunteers for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and this week is starting rehearsals for White Christmas at Papermill Playhouse. Want to learn more about Matthew? Check out his online resume. #BlueEyedBoy

Newbury Street man candy

Inspired by the gay blog, Dwight Supremacy that regularly includes “SIRveillance” posts, I thought I’d share one such guy who caught my eye when I was waiting patiently outside the Newbury Street Diesel store last week.If you like this sort of thing definitely check out the Dwight Supremacy blog, which is conveniently located in my blogroll.

ReyTipz – Rey lives in the Philippines and is a Twitter-holic who has racked up nearly 22,000 tweets in the 2+ years he’s been on Twitter.  He works in the health care industry but his real interest lies in sports (football / a.k.a. soccer), travel, cooking and music. Should you feel inclined, you can wish Rey a very happy birthday since he just celebrated this past Sunday.

Man_Mann – A.K.A. Manny is a Miami native who is currently making me envious of his travels through Europe. He’s relatively new to Twitter having joined this spring, but he tweets regularly and has a fun blog you can follow, which is full of the trials and travails of a gay 20-something in Miami. If intrigued consider following and check out his blog.

Scott_Herman is a former MTV “Real World” celeb of sorts who is very well known by many gay Americans because he has been such an outspoken ally for the GLBT community.  What you may not know is that Scott is a native New Englander.  More recently I’ve been following Scott’s blog which is dedicated to helping individual achieve personal fitness goals.  Struggling with your work out routine? Become a “Hermantor” and follow him on Twitter.
