Obama’s support for Marriage Equality articulated

Marriage Equality, Same Sex MarriageAnyone surprised the LGBT community still largely supports President Obama?  He remains our single most powerful champion in this fight.

Bay Windows endorses Richard Tisei

Richard Tsei, Bay WindowsGay Republican, TIsei, endorsed by Bay Windows

Bay Windows, New England’s premiere newspaper for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community, has done something inconceivable – it has endorsed a Republican running for a U.S. Congressional seat.

Richard Tisei (R) is running for Massachusetts 6th Congressional District and as Bay Windows writes, “Tisei is a pro-choice, pro-gay, and qualified for congress. Oh, and he’s gay.”  That’s right America, Massachusetts is now ready to export, out & proud gay Republicans.  This will be maddening for conservative pundits like Limbaugh and Huckabee. Can you imagine them frothing at the mouth as they say things like “US Republican Congressman, Richard Tisei’s husband…”

More importantly Tisei’s presence could build bridges and help end the war his party has waged on the LGBT community since the 1980s.  I don’t mean to infer that electing Tisei will single-handidly change the Republican party’s homophobic attitude toward homosexuality but it certainly adds an interesting dynamic and guarantees Tsei a national platform to talk openly about LGBT concerns.  He isn’t afraid of challenging his party.  After all he boycotted his own party’s convention when Republicans in our state added language opposing marriage equality.  And you know what – he still beat there ass. I can’t wait for this showdown and wish Richard success at the ballot box on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

Modern day hero: Malala Yousafzai wins Nobel Peace Prize

Malala YousafzaiCongratulations to Malala Yousafzai on becoming the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner. I couldn’t be happier for this brave young woman.

Yesterday the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to India’s Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai for their struggles against the suppression of children and for young people’s rights, including the right to education.

Malala Yousafzai came to global attention after she was shot in the head by the Taliban — two years ago this past week — for her efforts to promote education for girls in Pakistan.

Well done and congratulations Malala.

Marriage equality comes to West Virginia

same sex marriageYou know when West Virginia says “I do” to same sex marriage that marriage equality will quickly become the law of the land.  Hat tip to one of my good friend and bloggah, Dr. J who writes, You Think You Know, for bringing it to my attention in his most recent post.

After W.VA’s Attorney General announced that his office will no longer fight a court challenge on the state’s ban on same-sex marriages, the current governor, Earl Ray, had this to add,

“I do not plan to take any actions that would seek to overturn the courts’ decisions. West Virginia will uphold the law according to these rulings, and I have directed state agencies to take appropriate action to make that possible. Our state is known for its kindness and hospitality to residents and visitors alike. I encourage all West Virginians—regardless of their personal beliefs—to uphold our statewide tradition of treating one another with dignity and respect.”

Sarah Sliverman closes the gap

Sarah Silverman releases a hilarious video about a not so funny subject; equal pay.  Nothing infuriates me more than people treating the idea of feminism like a dirty word. For the record, feminism is about fighting for gender equality and fair treatment.  I’m happy that Sarah can bring attention to this topic.

The Equal Payback Project

HRC’s 2014 Hall of Shame

Michele BachmanEarlier this week the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) identified the most anti-equality elected officials in the US Congress.  Ratings are based on past voting records, their introduction and co-sponsorship of anti-LGBT legislation, and their public statements.

Any wonder why I self-identify as a Democrat? While both parties are represented, this list is certainly weighted in favor of the Republican Party.  I revile this party as a socially divisive, reactionary group that propagates hateful, xenophobic, misogynistic and homophobic legislation. While there are certainly exceptions, until there is a significant change in rhetoric and leadership, I can’t fathom supporting a national candidate who runs as a Republican. Human Rights Campaign, Michelle Bachmann

Unexpected marriage equality victory comes from SCOTUS decision not to review cases

same sex marriageMarriage Equality Update from NYT: The Supreme Court on Monday denied review in all five pending same-sex marriage cases, clearing the way for such marriages to proceed in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The move was a major surprise and suggests that the justices are not going to intercede in the wave of decisions in favor of same-sex marriage at least until a federal appeals court upholds a state ban.

Republicans are people too (just not these people)

#ImARepublicanVinny Minchillo, who worked on ads for Romney’s presidential campaign, recently told The New Republic that the #ImARepublican campaign is intended to help put an end to the partisan vitriol he feels is directed at his party.

Unfortunately for Minchillo this campaign only reaffirms the perceptions it was intended to challenge. In lieu of reaching out to Republicans they used stock photography. So the impression that Republicans care about the concerns of minorities or that one can be a Republican and an environmentalist seem to ring hollow.

Republicans are people tooWe all know that there are people of color who vote Republican. We also all know that there are Republicans who care about the environment.  However, this poorly executed campaign is unlikely to change perceptions and will be made the punchline of jokes…. Debunking The Top Five Myths About LGBT Non-Discrimination Laws

5 most popular myths about LGBT non-discrimination lawsLiving in Massachusetts it is easy to forget that there are cities and states around the country that do not have LGBT non-discrimination laws on the books.

While homophobia exists everywhere, there is power in having the law on your side and over time those laws influence behavior and help to change attitudes because the LGBT community is more welcomed and as a result able to live more openly.

D.O.J. to ask SCOTUS to uphold marriage equality rulings

Marriage EqualityOutgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Friday that the Department of Justice would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold same-sex marriage rulings from lower courts.

Don’t think elections count? Think again. Can you imagine any Republican President’s administration arguing on behalf of and in defense of LGBT rights?

Can we please turn off their microphones

Conservative CommentatorsThere are a number of conservative commentators who continue to receive a fair amount of mainstream (and left-leaning) media attention, virtually every time they open their mouth and I’m left scratching my head to wonder why. Their views are documented, no longer shocking and frankly uninteresting.

Shy of them saying they believe in science, nothing they say is either surprising or newsworthy anymore so don’t pretend it is and stop giving them the attention they crave. It is annoying.

I firmly believe that if they were no longer given air time (aside from that already provided on their talk radio shows and other conservative outlets like FOX News) they would quickly fade into obscurity. Whatever they once were, they are now essentially ratings whores looking for attention and saying whatever they think might create outrage and get them on major news networks. So can we just stop talking about them – that goes especially for left-leaning sites like MSNBC, Huffington Post, etc…

Thank you

Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional

same sex marriage in virginiaToday a federal appeals court panel struck down Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage.  The decision is significant because it also means similar marriage bans in North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia (states also part of the 4th Circuit) are considered unconstitutional.

Today’s ruling also impacts NC, SC and W VA.

This marks the second time an appellate-level court has ruled on state marriage bans and it sets the stage for a showdown in the US Supreme Court to consider state-level laws.

Oklahoma’s same sex marriage amendment struck down

Marriage Equality OklahomaToday the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit affirmed the January 2014 decision from U.S. District Judge Kern in Bishop v. Smith that Oklahoma’s constitutional amendment that forbids same-sex marriages is unconstitutional.

The state of Oklahoma now has the right to appeal before the full bench of the Tenth Circuit or it can do as the State of Utah did for the Kitchen case few weeks ago and appeal directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Either way, an appeal of some sort is to be expected but this remains great news for marriage equality advocates. Oklahoma is one of America’s most conservative states and if marriage equality is legal here – it can and will be legal everywhere (and quickly too).
