Ryan LandryBoston’s creative genius, Ryan Landry, is back this holiday season with a new show that is certain to have you laughing out loud. Tonight Ryan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans open with their new show, It’s a Horrible Life.  

The show will run through December 29th, playing every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at 8pm and every Sunday afternoon at 5pm. Tickets cost $35 for general admission and $45 V.I.P. seating and can be purchased online HERE.

Becky’s New Car

Lyric Stage Co.I may be out of town vacationing in South America but I wanted to give The Lyric Stage of Boston a shout out for their new play that opened this past week.

Becky’s New Car is a comedy about a woman who is bored with her life until she happens upon a wealthy suitor who presumes she is a widow.  Before Becky realizes it, she finds herself leading a double life that spirals out of her control.

Unfortunately I’ll miss this performance which opened on the 29th and will run through December 22nd.

SpeakEasy Stage Co. presents Kurt Vonnegut’s Make Up Your Mind

SpeakEasy Stage CompanyThis past week I was able to see The SpeakEasy Stage Company world premiere of a the new comedy, KURT VONNEGUT’S MAKE UP YOUR MIND.  The play was assembled by Broadway playwright Nicky Silver from eleven different versions of the script penned by Mr. Vonnegut before his passing in 2007.

The show opens in New York City in 1986.  The 90-minute performance without intermission is filled with fast paced, witty dialog interspersed by occasional breaks where Richard Snee pulls double duty, also playing the role of Kurt Vonnegut talking to the audience. I preferred the powerful drama TRIBES that opened the SpeakEasy Stage Company 2013 / 2014 season, but fans of Mr. Vonnegut’s cutting wit will like this performance and enjoy the repartee.

BosGuy does the Donkey Show at Oberon

Oberon Theater Donkey ShowLast Saturday Sergio and I joined those crazy kids over at The Welcoming Committee (TWC) at The Donkey Show at the Oberon Theater in Harvard Square.  How would I describe this show? An absolute blast. The 90-minute show flew by so fast I couldn’t believe it was over and we stayed a bit longer to keep dancing to the porn-stached DJ who continued to play one disco classic after another.

I will admit going with TWC probably added an energy to our show that may be lacking on a random Saturday night (The Donkey Show takes place every Saturday), but it was still an absolute blast and something I’d encourage people to check out.Donkey Show at Oberon Theater

Ryan LandryRyan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans have packed their bags and bid Provincetown and Boston a fond adieu for the time being while they shack up with Varla Jean Merman for a four week run at Theatre 80 St. Marks.

SpeakEasy Stage: TRIBES

The SpeakEasy Stage Co. first play of their 2013-2014 season, TRIBES, opened last week, and  I had the opportunity to see a performance this past weekend. I was genuinely surprised by how touched I was and would encourage you to put this on your calendar.

British playwright and director, Nina Raine, who wrote this play is obviously incredibly talented but The SpeakEasy Stage Co. deserves credit for their production.  The staging is great and creates an intimate connection with the audience.  The cast works well together, and at different moments each of them shine without stealing the other’s spotlight.

The show centers around Billy (played by James Caverly), a deaf son born into a dysfunctional English family that certainly loves but mostly overlooks him.  I’ll admit that the story didn’t speak to me when I read about it but I’m so happy that I went to see this show and I’m confident you’ll feel the same way too.  Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at the Box Office, by phone 617-933-8600 or online, SpeakEasyStage.com.

While there are many great national touring shows coming to Boston, there is a vibrant local theater scene too often overlooked.  I’d like to encourage you to check out one of the performances listed below.  Since tickets to these performances are much less than those national touring companies you can even afford to go out for  drinks after the show.

Free Shakespeare on The Common

BostonThe Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) free production of William Shakespeare’s play, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, started this past weekend and runs through July 28th.

About The Two Gentlemen of Verona:  Believed to have been written in 1590 or 1591, this comedy is considered by some to be William Shakespeare’s first play. The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behavior of people in love.  More about the play may be read here.

Provincetown live performances

Well Strung will perform at the Art House in Provincetown June 30 – Sept 7th

One of the things I love about Provincetown is this little seaside village offers more nightly live performances than some major cities in the United States. Should you plan a trip to Ptown do yourself a favor and check out one of the many live performances that takes place every night.

What makes this all the more special is that these are not traveling productions of Broadway Shows you can see when they come through your hometown.  These are shows that are geared to the overwhelmingly gay audience that comes to support the local arts scene ranging from drag queens like Varla Jean Merman to cabaret at the Post Office.

Some shows are performed only one night a week, like The Gold Dust Orphans, Pornocchio, performed every Tuesday at 8PM at The Provincetown Theatre.  Others have shows multiple nights a week like Miss Richfield 1981 who performs at The Crown & Anchor. Then there are those special performances that take place just a couple nights in the summer like Tony Award Winner, Sutton Foster, who will perform at the Art House, for three shows only during 4th of July Week.

SpeakEasy Stage: In The Heights

speakeasy stage bostonIn The Heights, the winner of four 2008 Tony Awards, is the current production from The SpeakEasy Stage Company that opened May 10th and runs through June 16th.  The musical will grab your attention with large dance numbers set to rap and hip hop rhapsodies all set in NYC’s Latino neighborhood, Washington Heights, in the summer of 2003.  The story centers around members of this closely knit neighborhood and how their lives are entwined with the neighborhood they all call home.

Boston TheaterIf you require a bit more incentive to purchase tickets to this show, I’ll give you three reasons: Diego Klock-Perez (Usnavi) and Jorge Barranco (Sonny) who’s lives center around their barrio bodega.  Their rap and dance scenes are among the best in the show.  However, I was distracted every time the incredibly handsome actor, Jared Dixon (Benny), stepped on stage and his shirtless scene on the balcony at the opening of the second act alone makes this show worth its money, but fortunately there is more to offer than these three men and the entire cast really does deserve credit for pulling off some intricate dance and musical numbers.  This is a great date option or night out with friends.
