South End’s trendy Italian cafe Mod Espresso opens

Welcome to the South End’s newest coffee shop, Mod Espresso, by stopping by and sampling some of their delicious La Colombe coffee. It is a personal favorite.

The chic cafe sits inside the Modern Relik home design showroom located at 485 Harrison Avenue. The European-style coffee bar, was developed by Michela Larson who locals may remember opened the very popular (and still missed) Italian restaurant, Rocca, in the South End. In addition to serving excellent coffee, Mod Espresso has a limited menu that includes sweets like cookies, cakes and pastry as well as some savory bites you can grab for lunch or snacks. The cafe will be expanding their hours in the weeks that follow but is currently open 7-days a week. Check out some photos of this chic new coffee shop on Harrison Avenue, courtesy of the Mod Espresso Cafe.

Benvenuti nel quartiere!

Saturday morning coffee

Stephen St. RussellThis week I’m sharing a photograph of Stephen (one half of Instagrm’s @renovationhusbands). Who knows what Stephen is contemplating over his morning cup of coffee. Perhaps he’s watching his husband, David, outside tending to his beehive? Check out more about Stephen and his husband via IG.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

Some of you may recall this riddle, which I post around this time each year.

This week’s brain teaser:  While changing a tire a motorist accidentally dropped all four wheel nuts into the sewer grate and try as they might, they could not retrieve them. The motorist thought they would be stranded on the roadside until they came up with this brilliant solution which let them drive to the nearest service station. What was the motorist’s solution?

What to do this weekend

While many of you will head out for Black Friday, I encourage you to reserve some energy for going out and meeting up with friends later.

Several notable events include Ryan Landry’s holiday show, Christmas on Uranus opening this Friday; for those of you looking for something a bit more traditional, check out Boston Ballet Nutcracker  which also opens on Friday. Later this weekend join the World AIDS Day 24 Hour Vigil.

Happy Thanksgiving

Rio de Janeiro BrazilIt is Thanksgiving in the US, and I am spending the day with Sergio, my parents and a good friend in Portsmouth, NH. I want to wish everyone celebrating this holiday a relaxing and fun day. The photo above dates back to Thanksgiving 2015 when we were visiting Rio de Janeiro with friends.

Vintage gay

Unsure who this family is but based on the hair and what I can see I would guess this was taken in the early 1980s. Anyone know anything about this photo?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Pablo Ranea, Argentina chefThanksgiving is tomorrow so it seems only fitting that I would feature a master chef who can tempt you with both his handsome photos like the one I’ve pulled from chef Pablo’s IG account as well as some of his delicious creations.

Chef Pablo Ranea is from Argentina and I hope to be able to connect with him next month when Sergio and I head to Mendoza, Argentina. Lately, Ranea has made a name for himself with his pop-up restaurants in Argentina and here in the United States. Check out the photo below from his dinner in California this past September. Feel free to follow his account which is full of eye-popping meals and his travels. You can learn more about Pablo Ranea, here.
