American Thanksgiving is tomorrow making this one of the busiest weeks of the year to travel so I thought this image was timely to use for this weekly post. A new residential development has been proposed for 566 Columbus Avenue. The building which sits at the busy intersection of Mass and Columbus Ave was purchased earlier this year by New Boston Ventures, and the new owners have proposed redeveloping the site into a new six-story mixed use commercial and residential building (rendering shown above).
The proposed project (currently unnamed) would feature a community oriented ground floor with approximately 5,000 sf of commercial space that would include a social enterprise café with outdoor seating, an art gallery, and improved community space for the United South End Settlements, which has been in the existing building since the mid 1970s.
The proposed project would include 66 residential home ownership units, 11 of which would be reserved for artist live/work spaces, as well as 42 below-grade parking spaces. The proposal would seem to make much better use of the space as it exists today (see below).
I’m not sure if this is a kilt or not – it’s kind of impossible to tell what the heck he is wearing but it sure is fun to look at.
The 2019 Holiday Season has started. Later this week will be Thanksgiving and there are a lot of parties taking place starting Wednesday to welcome people who are back visiting family for the holiday.
Several notable events are taking place this week including irreverent shows like Married With Children – A Drag Parody on Tuesday and Ryan Landry’s holiday show, Christmas on Uranus that opens on Friday. If you’re looking for something a bit more traditional, check out Boston Ballet Nutcracker which opens on Friday. Lastly Madonna – Madame X Tour comes to Boston on Sunday night.

Last weekend I found myself reading Jaclyn Cashman’s article in the Boston Herald, “Sale of Hynes must include commitment to arts center”, and I’d encourage you to do the same.
She asserts that the building should not just go to the highest bidder but to a buyer that will commit serious square footage dedicated to the arts. Boston has spent the better part of the last decade bending over backwards, accommodating developers looking to build luxury residences that do little to enhance the quality of life in Boston and it is now time to make investments that can benefit all.
I know this guy barely has a five o’clock shadow but I felt compelled to make an exception and hope you agree. Next week I’ll be back with more scruff.

The Gold Dust Orphans annual holiday show will take place at The Lithuanian Hall Theater at 368 West Broadway in Southie, starting Friday, November 29th and running through Sunday, December 22nd. Ticket prices for General Admission seating start at $49.99 + a $3.49 service charge.
While details about the holiday musical are slim, a website has been set up for ticket sales to see, Christmas on Uranus. Unfortunately, Sergio and I will have to miss this year’s production because we will be traveling but I’d like to encourage others to go check out this show.

This week I’m doing something a bit different. I stumbled upon a story that includes a half dozen or more photographs of a gay motorcycle club from the 1960s taken by photographer Sylvan Rand. Check out Rand’s photos from his time with the Gay Motorcycle Club.
