A 31-room hotel, restaurant and bar with outdoor dining, and four condominiums was presented last month to the Provincetown planning and zoning boards with the intention to redevelop the Old Reliable Fish House property on the waterfront at 229R Commercial Street.
The Old Reliable was a popular place to eat in Provincetown in the 1970s and through the 1990s the waterfront restaurant offered cozy dining on the beach but the restaurant has now been closed for years and the building has fallen into severe disrepair and was condemned in 2015 following a fire. You can read more about this interesting real estate development in the heart of Ptown in The Provincetown Independent and you can learn more about the history of 229R Commercial Street (and see some great photos of the property), here.
The former home to Sister Sorel reopened this past Wednesday as Le Canular, the South End’s newest wine bar. According to the article in Boston Magazine the wines will all be priced at $13 and there will be a limited menu that you can check out Wednesday through Saturday from 6 p.m.-midnight.
I’m happy to see the space reopen and wish Maslow and his team much luck. While I’ve enjoyed the food at its neighboring Whaling in Oklahoma, I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m sitting in Tremont 647. I hope the transformation from Sister Sorel to Le Canular is more successful.
ADAM & ANDY is set in the fictional New England town of Woodfield, CT. You can learn more about Adam and Andy and purchase a copy of “the definitive collection of Adam and Andy” by visiting, adamandandy.com.

Do you recognize this photograph? Aaron Fricke (left) made history when he filed suit in U.S. District court after his high school in Pawtucket, RI told him he could not bring his date, Paul Guilbert (right) to his prom in 1980 in the court case, Fricke v. Lynch. For those who are interested in learning more about this ballsy teenager who challenged the status quo you can read his autobiography Reflections of a Rock Lobster in which he details growing up gay culminating at that high school dance. Read more about it here.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.
