Thanks to Queer Newark’s oral history project we know that this photo of John takes place at some point in the 1950s or 60s where he grew up and participated in Newark’s thriving gay scene.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. This scruffy Italian was previously listed as a Furry Friday and I can’t really get enough of him so I’ve decided to feature his Instagram account. I figured nobody would complain about seeing more of this gay, hairy Italian from Pisa with a beautiful chest.
This fitness specialist features photos of him working out and enjoying life like this picture of him in Portoferraio, Italy.

Pennsylvania State Representative Brain Sims has long been an object of my affection, although the closest we’ve ever come is me saying hello and Brian smiling back or waving to me from the Boatslip in Provincetown.
Back in 2014 I wrote a post Lusting after Brian Sims, where I said:
“Imagine my frustration when I Googled “Shirtless Brian Sims” hoping to feature him as this week’s Furry Friday (he MUST have a hairy chest) and nothing came up?!? Where is the justice? Has Brian never been photographed without his shirt? I think Pennsylvanians should immediately pass a law mandating Brian should be photographed shirtless.”
The legislation I requested was never brought up – much less put to a vote, but apparently Sims has been dating a handsome and talented Canadian named Mark MacKillop. Mark studied ballet here in Boston and at the American Ballet Theatre in NYC, and he is currently on tour with the traveling Broadway production of Anastasia. Earlier this summer the two of them spent some time at Fire Island where I believe the shirtless photo was taken – Hallelujah!
