Make Way for Ducklings: The Art of Robert McCloskey
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the children’s book set in Boston, Make Way for Ducklings (1941), the MFA has created an exhibition that tracks the career of the book’s author and illustrator Robert McCloskey.
With art from Make Way for Ducklings at its center, the retrospective presents more than 50 works, including studies for other books written and illustrated by McCloskey. An exhibition highlight is the miniature bronze model for Nancy Schön’s Make Way for Ducklings sculpture, commissioned for the Boston Public Garden in 1985.

Toys for Joys is next Friday, December 9th
If you’ve yet to register to attend the 8th annual Toys for Joys Gift Gala, I wanted to remind you that the celebration is a week from this Friday on December 9th. This is a really wonderful event that brings together Boston’s LGBTQ community and our allies to collect gifts for underprivileged children in Boston and the Boston area. The fundraiser is devoid of speeches and rubber chicken meals and devoted instead to socializing with friends.
It is Holly Folly weekend in Provincetown
Provincetown’s Holly Folly 2016 is a three-day weekend festival that starts tomorrow on Friday, December 2 and runs through the weekend. The full line up of events which includes lots of shopping, music, parties and more is detailed on their official website, ptown.org/holly-folly.
Today is World AIDS Day
Despite amazing advances there remains no cure and new infections continue to be reported. In honor of World AIDS Day, make a commitment to know your status if you’ve not been tested recently and encourage your friends to do the same. AIDS Service Organizations (ASO) around the country and the world, still need your support. Here in Boston, our largest ASO is The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. Visit their website, make a donation or volunteer.
Vintage gay
In honor of World AIDS Day, I wanted to share this photo for my weekly Vintage Gay post. As an impressionable and closeted teenager, demonstrations from men and women who were protesting the Reagan Administration’s lack of action to help those dying of AIDS is seared in my memory and one of the reasons I think of President Ronald Reagan as an evil, uncaring, inhumane President.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
How Privileged Are You?
A couple years ago BuzzFeed posted this quick and easy (unscientific – I feel like that needs to be stressed these days) quiz to determine how ‘privileged’ you are. While I don’t take these online quizzes too seriously – and I hope you don’t either – they can be a fun distraction. This particular online quiz also made me reflect on some of the things I take for granted as well as some things that I’ve learned to either overcome or at a minimum not dwell upon.
I scored a 54 out of 100 points. The survey explains, “You’re quite privileged. You’ve had a few struggles, but overall your life has been far easier than most. This is not a bad thing, nor is it something to be ashamed of. But you should be aware of your advantages and work to help others who don’t have them.”
I normally wouldn’t share this survey, but the final sentence, “But you should be aware of your advantages and work to help others who don’t have them.” struck a chord with me.
Much thanks to my friend, David G, for pointing out that I neglected to include a link to the survey if you’d like to give it a try. Chalk it up to the hazzards of self editing! Link here: How Privileged Are You.
