24/7 study ranks Massachusetts best in nation

massachusettsMassachusetts is never going to win congeniality or weather accolades. If these are what matter most then ignore this survey’s findings since neither were evaluated by 24/7  in a report they published last week that looked at the poverty rates, education and life expectancy to determine the quality of life in each state.

Here is a quick recap on why the Bay State a.k.a. Massachusetts took the top spot, according to the 24/7 Wall St. report:

  • More than 2 out of 5 adults have at least a bachelor’s degree: The highest ratio of any state. Theoretically, the high level of education helps lower the poverty rate.
  • The poverty rate is 11.5%, which is lower than the U.S. average.
  • Massachusetts residents’ life expectancy at birth is 80.2 year old, the fifth highest in the nation, signifying a healthy state.

The top five best states to live in according to the list are Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Minnesota and New Jersey. The lowest ranked states were Mississippi, West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Kentucky.  Find this interesting? Click here to read the full report.

BosGuy travel tips

travel tipsIt is rare for us to return from a vacation feeling anything but rested and happy, but I know that is not always the case for everyone.  Part of the trick to getting back into the swing of things is making sure that your body and mind actually have time to process that you are going back to work.

Here are three tips that make returning from your vacation a lot easier and cost next to nothing to do.

1 – Travel during the middle of the week: If you are going to take a week off from work (assuming you work Monday – Friday), travel during the middle of the week. Why travel Wednesday to Wednesday? You make your life much easier, because your vacation is book ended by a short work week before and after your time out of the office. Who doesn’t love short work weeks?

2 – Treat yourself: Having a treat at home gives you something to look forward to. Often before we leave on vacation we’ll make sure we have a nice bottle of Champagne in the refrigerator awaiting our return so on our first night back we can enjoy a few toasts and reminisce about our trip. I have other friends who book themselves a massage after vacations. Pick a treat that you would like and make sure it is scheduled or waiting for you when you return home.

3 – Take an extra day off to get your life in order: If you can, take an extra day off after arriving home. This way when you return home you can still feel like you are on vacation, and use the extra day off to get your life in order. Running errands on a weekday is so much easier.

These tips may not be for everyone and we don’t necessarily always follow these for every vacation, but they really go a long way to prolonging the post-vacation glow; especially tip number 1 – there is nothing better than coming back to a short work week.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.

Hairspray Live on NBC tonight 8PM ET

pop cuture, musicalsI’ve loved every version of Hairspray, starting with the original movie written and directed by John Waters in 1988. The musical which came later to Broadway and was then remade into a movie musical lacks the emotional impact of the original, but I still love it.

Set your DVRs if you’ll be out so you can watch this fun musical which will be live on NBC tonight starting at 8PM ET / 7PM CT.

Sanctuary cities like Boston face real threat from Trump

Boston, sanctuary city, immigrationRecently San Francisco made news by passing a resolution, indicating they intend to remain a sanctuary city. I’m proud that Boston’s Mayor as well as mayors from several surrounding cities including Cambridge and Somerville have also repeated that they will remain a sanctuary city even if it means losing federal funding which could happen, considering President-elect Trump has pledged to move against sanctuary cities financially, saying,“We will cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities.”

It is hard to tell what will happen, but I support Mayor Walsh on this issue. Donald Trump may have won the presidential election but he lost in a landslide here and his values are not my state’s values. I’d rather Boston work with mayors from other cities like San Francisco and New York City than compromise on this.

This is how you go high, when they go low

when they go low, we go highDoes the name Natalie Elle Woods sound familiar to you? Perhaps not. She is not a politician nor is she famous, but a spur of the moment action by Natalie earlier this month has been the topic of discussion on a number of social media sites and I really want to share her story with you.

Natalie was out having dinner with a friend on November 11th when an older gentleman seated directly behind her started talking about how disgusted he was to learn his nephew was gay. According to Natalie his friends said they would pray that his nephew would be cured. Instead of getting angry or possibly intervening, Natalie said that she thought about what Michelle Obama had said at the DNC. She said she felt inspired by her words, “When they go low, we go high.” and she decided to take the high road. She called the manager over and asked if she could pay for the dinner and leave a quick note on the bill.

Did Natalie’s actions change the mind or hearts of the people who’s dinner she paid for? Probably not, but her actions have gone on to inspire others and to show how one can make a statement outside of shouting over each other and for that I think she should be commended.

I’ve abbreviated the full story to make this easier for all to read, but if you’d like to read more about this, Huffington Post has a lovely interview with Natalie Elle Woods that you can read here: Here’s What Happened When They Went Low And She Went High.

Great Yankee Swap gift: Mass Firefighter Calendar

massachusetts-firefighter-calendarThe MSPCA is hoping to raise $50,000 by selling calendars of shirtless Massachusetts firemen posing with their own rescue pooches, or adoptable dogs and cats. The 2017 Massachusetts Firefighter Calendar (featuring “12 of the Bay State’s hottest firemen,” according to the MSPCA) is for sale online for $20.

Considering the price point and how some of the money goes to such a worthy charity this seems like a great gift for any upcoming Yankee Swaps you may be participating this holiday season.

Manchester By The Sea starring Casey Affleck opens later this month

Casey Affleck, Kenneth LonerganLater this month be on the look out for Casey Affleck’s new film  from director Kenneth Lonegran, “Manchester By the Sea”. The movie was one of the biggest breakouts from the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is expected to score big during the Christmas holidays and just in time for the awards season.

“Manchester By the Sea” is a heartbreaking story about when Lee (Casey Affleck) is made legal guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges) after his father Joe (Kyle Chandler) suddenly dies. Set in a Massachusetts’ seaside North Shore town, Lee has to face his community and ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams). Critics hailed performances from its stars, Affleck and Williams, and both have decent shots at earning an Oscar nomination.

How true was that Hollywood movie

moviesHave you ever watched a movie “based on a true story” and wondered how much of the truth was stretched or eliminated altogether to appease Hollywood? The website informationisbeautiful.net has used data to review every scene in several popular biographical films to evaluate their veracity.

Below are two movies that are included in the post.informationisbeautiful

Deep blue means the scene is  true and pretty much what happened
Light blue means the scene is mostly true but tweaks were made
Light red means the scene was pretty false; understandable dramatic license
Deep red means completely false – outrageous dramatic license taken
Grey means couldn’t be verified or sources may have been private (e.g. diaries)

See how true several other popular “based on a true story” moves are here.
