Vintage ‘Tube

Do you remember this 2008 video of 29 year old Valentina Hasan, a contestant in the second season of the Bulgarian show “Music Idol”, who gave this memorable performance of Mariah Carey’s song “Without you” in fake English? YouTube calls this video “Ken Lee”.

Have a great Saturday night.

Uber maps Boston

This week Uber released a map of Boston, showing high-traffic areas for their drivers and shedding insight into what the Boston Globe referred to as where Boston’s “young and affluent” live.  I’m not sure why they might assume it is only the young who use Uber but the map is interesting nonetheless.

Boston, neighborhoods like the Back Bay, the South End, and an increasingly gentrified South Boston are heavily represented as are campuses and high-traffic areas like Logan Airport and downtown.

Do you use Uber? Are you more partial to other similar services like Hailo or Lyft?  These new companies have been a boon to consumers and have completely disrupted the stranglehold that a few taxi companies have maintained through the antiquated medallion system I ranted about back in 2012 here, Boston needs more taxis.

Trophy Room opens in the Chandler Inn

Trophy Room opening night

Trophy Room opening night

The Trophy Room had a soft opening on Thursday but as word spread the crowds came.  When I first arrived at 7:00 pm nearly half the bar was gay but by the time I left close to 9:00 pm (see photo above) it had noticeably tilted to a predominantly gay clientele.

Tonight The Trophy Room will roll out their full menu which includes small shared plates, soups, salads, burgers and flat breads ranging from $7 – $14. The menu has a few main plates that range $16 – $19 and include honey-bourbon steak tips, roasted chicken, cod and shrimp fra diavalo all prepared under the watchful eye of chef Evan Campbell.

The redesigned space seems larger than before thanks to raising the ceilings, a large mirror over the bar to make the space seem wider, and relocating the entrance further up Chandler Street.  While I didn’t try anything to eat and can’t comment on the menu, the bar staff is handsome, friendly and fast; that combined with a familiar location and a nice redesign bodes well for the The Trophy Room.

Furry Friday

Furry Friday shyNormally, I prefer when I can see a guy’s eyes, but there are always exceptions and I think this guy is rather exceptional.

BosGuy brain teaser

BosGuy Brain TeaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, feel free to get help or share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

This week I thought I’d share these three images in lieu of a riddle.  Look closely and let me know the theme as well as what each of the three images represent.  If you need a hint – think about the 1990s.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

Like riddles? Check out past week’s brain teasers.

90s party at dBar Saturday night

90s Dance Party at dBarNot going to the Fenway Men’s Event on Saturday but feeling the urge to get out on the dance floor and Vogue? Do images of Mark Wahlberg as a Calvin Klein model still keep you warm during New England winters? Perhaps you should plan on visiting dBar this Saturday when they host their 90s Dance Party.

Think of me when DJ Jay Ine plays Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

18 year old men rejoice: Premature ejaculation drug on its way

20140421-124819.jpg

Last week I read on my news feed that two pharmaceutical drug companies have formed a partnership to bring to the US market a drug to combat premature ejaculation.

If you thought the erectile dysfunction TV advertisements were uncomfortable to watch, just wait for these commercials to make their debut. How terribly awkward and what a boon for SNL. Don’t believe me? Read more here.

The event now takes place in less than a month at the Wilbur Theater on May 19th, and I wanted to encourage supporters of this great organization to mark the date and consider attending.  This year’s special guest is musician and Broadway star, Billy Porter, currently playing the Kinky Boots role of Lola on Broadway.

Boston Globe editorial cartoonist, Dan Wasserman, who calls Boston “a shining city on some hills and other curiosities” is featured in the latest issue ArchitectureBoston.  It provides a very funny view of Boston neighborhoods and nearby towns.

Monikers are a play on the words hill, ville and ill, featuring “villes” such as “Hipsterville,” “Martyville,” and “Newtonville.” It also features “hills” such as “Mission Hill” and “Bunker Hill” as well as some “ills” such as “Nofrill,” “Cheapthrill,” “Beerspill,” and “Gentrifill”, and I love it.

Yahoo News features BosGuy post

BosGuy Scruffy Sunday Yahoo NewsUnbeknownst to me, Yahoo News picked up my most recent Scruffy Sunday  post over the weekend.

While there were a lot of very nasty comments (the majority of which I deleted), it was quite a nice surprise. I don’t expect that Yahoo News will publish anything else from me, and it is unlikely I will ever see such stats again but it certainly was fun while it lasted.

Many of the bloggers whom I list on my blogroll will no doubt be scratching their head at the dramatic increase in referrer links coming from my blog starting this past Sunday, and I wanted to offer some explanation as well as to comment that I have no idea how or why Yahoo News came to select my weekly post, but I have enjoyed the ride. The past couple days have been pretty cool.
