Flashback Friday

Flashback FridayIn the late 1980s Boston embarked on its largest construction project in the city’s history. It became known as “The Big Dig”. Critics have pointed to this public works projects as an example of excess and waste, but looking back at the scope of the project and the final result, I am so happy with how it turned out.

Above on the left you see what was referred to as “The Artery”. Initially constructed in the 1950s it was the main highway that ran north to south through the city.  The expressway was also approximately 30-40′ above ground casting huge shadows, creating awful pollution and cleaving the city in two. The Big Dig submerged the expressway and expanded the number of lanes to help move traffic through downtown.  After the green iron girders that supported The Artery were torn down a large park called the Rose Kennedy Greenway (a.k.a The Greenway) took its place. You can see traffic driving into one of the entrance ramps to the submerged highway in the present day photo.  Both images depict the same exact spot along the expressway.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

This week I’ve put a twist on the weekly post by sharing three images courtesy of LEGO.  To celebrate their 55th anniversary, LEGO has created images intended to serve as riddles. I’ve selected a few below for you to decipher.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

You can click on any of the images below to enlarge if that helps.

I’m falling behind

behindWas this an excuse to post this gratuitous photo of this handsome man in his bathing suit? Perhaps, but the reality is I’m falling behind at work.

Earlier this week, I was on vacation and yesterday I spent nearly all day flying to San Francisco for meetings. When am I going to get my work done?  ARGH!!! Strangely writing about my frustrations and the image of this man are working like medicine, and I can feel the tension already leaving my body.

Mildred Fierce opens tonight

Ryan LandryUnfortunately, I’m not in Boston to see opening night, but luckily Ryan Landry’s latest musical starring Varla Jean Merman will be running in Boston through the middle of March.  You can buy your tickets online here.

Funny photo of the day

Machu PicchuThe HuffingtonPost called this photobomb from a rogue llama an “instant classic” and I kind of have to agree with them.  Taken by Erica Kuschel while on vacation with her husband, this llama apparently is no shrinking violet and inserted itself in Erica’s photograph of the ancient Incan city, Machu Picchu.

You can read more about the photograph here.

Starwood Hotels new advertising campaign

Impressive Packages

In light of my previous post about hotel chain rankings, perhaps, I can suggest Starwood consider spicing up their advertising to get more attention.  I have to admit I’d be tempted to learn more about their impressive packages.  Then again, maybe this would be an example of why it is best to leave this sort of thing to advertising professionals.

The best hotels in the US

W ViequesMarket Metrix hospitality index has ranked the best US hotels.  The survey which was compiled by responses from more than 40,000 travelers placed Drury Hotels at the top of the list.

I’m not familiar with Drury Hotels, which has properties in 20 states but mostly in the Southeast, Southwest and Midwest.  Other very recognizable hotel chains scored well including Kimpton, Renaissance, Hard Rock, and Ritz.  Huffington Post breaks down the findings to show you the top ten hotel brands according to Market Metrix, which you can view here.

Curious to see all the brands that were included in the ranking – click here.

Suddenly it makes sense

Water PoloI had forgotten how much I enjoyed watching Water Polo during the Olympic games in London last year until I stumbled upon this photo.  Oddly, after seeing the photo, the appeal of the sport suddenly made sense.

San Francisco for a NY minute

San FranciscoNo sooner have I returned from Puerto Rico and I’ve been told to hop on a plane to San Francisco.  I’m so bummed, because the trip is so last minute and so quick I won’t even be able to see friends or go out and enjoy the city.

Joke of the day

LaughingQ: What do you call a gay Jamaican guy?

A: Pokemon.

I know the joke is quite cheesy but it gave me a good chuckle, and I hope it makes you smile and laugh today too. Have a great day.

“Meet and Meat” mixer for gay men in Boston

Guys DrinkingTwenty-something, BostonMo, is collaborating with those wonderful people over at Urban Grape in the South End and The Salty Pig to host a fun and relaxed “Meet and Meat” mixer on Sunday, February 10th from 7-9PM.

Register for the “Meet and Meat” here

Space is limited for this event and there is a small registration fee, but take heart that you will be able to sample wine, beer, and spirits, as well as platters of meats from The Salty Pig.  Proceeds raised from this Sunday evening will go to benefit the Point Foundation – which empowers promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society.

Taste of the South End 2013

Taste of the South EndThe Taste of the South End, which raises funds for the  AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts may be my favorite charity event of the year.  With 40 restaurants participating, it is a “must attend” in my opinion.  That is why I wanted to give everyone a heads up that one month from today, on Tuesday, March 5th, the Taste of the South End 2013 will take place. If you’d like to learn more about the event or purchase tickets online, link here.

Feel free to check out my two minute video from last years Taste.

Silly Siri

Silly SiriThis past December I included the post, Santa lives on Fire Island. My friend Jesse is a bit of a computer nerd and switched up his iPhone to have Siri provide cheeky answers to set questions like this one above which gives a nod to Laverne & Shirley, a popular US television show from the 70s and 80s.  Too funny.
