Thank god for Delux in the South End
Earlier this year Eater Boston published Delux Cafe Has Defied – and Nourished – Its Neighborhood but they should have used my headline, Thank god for Delux. To quote the article in Eater Boston, “If you’ve ever set foot in Delux, you’ll have noticed that it’s always decorated for Christmas…, and that the walls are lined with vintage albums. Delux’s former owner, Kevin Sheehan — with whom Hafner and Yanney are friends — defined the current look of Delux in the early-to-mid 1990s.” It might be the only restaurant in the neighborhood that has neither a website or a facebook page and still has excellent name recognition.
For more than fifty years this space has been a neighborhood staple, first as Higgins Pub, then the Elbow Room and finally Chez Joie before Delux opened. All provided a safe harbor for unpretentious dining (and drinking). In a neighborhood where $100 a night per couple is the norm, Delux reminds me of a far different South End that existed before the seismic gentrification changes; it is a miracle that the South End still has a treasure like Delux so be sure to show them some love.
Paying Delux a visit is like taking a trip back in time, giving you a feel for what this neighborhood was like 20+ years ago. Delux has lasted longer than a lot of neighborhood gems from the same time like: Claremont Cafe, Geoffrey’s, Le Gamin, On The Park, Pho Republique and now added to the list, Tremont 647.

Many of Boston’s local theater companies seasons will be concluding in the next few weeks so I wanted to encourage you to get tickets to one or more of the following local productions. Boston’s local theater scene continues to mature and get better but this doesn’t happen in a vacuum and local support is crucial.

It tells the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans were forced to leave their homes following the events at Pearl Harbor. ALLEGIANCE follows the family as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.
Lyric Stage Company present The Wiz Opening May 18th this much loved musical will run through June 24th at their theater in the Back Bay.
The A.R.T. presents, Jagged Little Pill This world premiere and original story was inspired by the themes and emotions laid bare in Alanis Morissette’s 1995, Grammy Award-winning album. Boston Ballet closes their season with La Sylphide
The Boston Ballet 2017-2018 season will conclude with La Sylphide, which opens next week on Thursday, May 24th and will run through June 10, 2018.
Boston Ballet Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen describes La Sylphide as the epitome of romantic ballet, which will be all the more special paired with the rarely-performed Bournonville Divertissements. Boston Ballet premiered Bournonville’s La Sylphide in 1988, and it was performed again in 2005 and 2007 with additional choreography by Sorella Englund. Of the 2005 performance, Karen Campbell wrote in The Boston Globe, “Boston Ballet’s gorgeous…production of La Sylphide [is] deliciously sweet…the ballet’s only disappointment is that it leaves you wanting more.”

La Sylphide is Bournonville’s most famous ballet. Set in the Scottish Highlands, it tells the fantastical tale of James, a man on his wedding day, who falls under the spell of a beautiful and ethereal woodland sylph. Tricked into accepting the help of Madge, an evil sorceress, he tries desperately to possess his newfound desire. This ballet showcases challenging, bravura solos for male dancers and light, buoyant jumps executed by the sylphs.
Vintage gay
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. The most searched for cocktail in your state
In February Food & Wine shared this interesting graphic of the most popular cocktail in each state. The information was compiled by Versus Reviews, a consumer goods research organization, that released this visual guide after reviewing data from Google over the last 12 months to determine which were the most searched for cocktails in each state.
Although I mostly drink wine, I thought it was interesting that it aligned to my preference for cocktails. If I’m not drinking wine, I am inclined to order either a martini or gin & tonic which according to their research is the preferred cocktail for Massachusetts. What a strange coincidence that a G&T is also the preferred cocktail of Washington State – yet another similarity for those Amazon Executives to consider as they contemplate where to set up their HQ2.
This week on Instagram: gdlart_ph
I don’t know much about this Italian photographer but I like his handsome models and the quirky photos on his Instagram account which typically focus on the male torso. The photographer who’s name remains a mystery, fixates on male models with who are incredibly toned. Most of his photos include model torsos with their heads wrapped in colorful tulle fabric.
