The Welcoming Committee (a.k.a. TWC) is a social group that believes in (and works to) broaden the spectrum of what gay life has to offer. Staff and volunteers help create and enrich our local community by bringing people together and organizing programs that go beyond traditional gay venues. Their events include everything from social mixers to organizing meet ups at sports events and even planning trips like next week’s WoW weekend at Sunday River. The organization is mostly comprised of 20- and 30-somethings but all are welcome.
You can learn more about TWC by visiting, thewelcomingcommittee.com and liking their Facebook page. One of their signature events is the monthly Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB for short) which happens the first Friday of every month.
Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018 I want to feature the many groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you would like to have your club / team featured please reach out to me.
A world-premiere musical stage adaptation of the film “Moulin Rouge”, opens in Boston this summer before heading to Broadway. Tickets went on sale to the general public this past weekend is certain to sell out if it hasn’t already so if you’re interested in seeing the show, don’t dally and order your tickets today.
The long dormant Colonial Theater, which closed in October 2015 will reopen after undergoing a spectacular renovation, bringig the 100+ year theater back to its former glory thanks to a significant investment from Emerson College.
Shown above is a rendering from London-based Ambassador Theatre Group & Boston-based Elkus Manfredi Architects of what the remodeled 1,700 seat theater will look like when it opens to the public this June. With the reopening of The Colonial Boston’s historic theater district will once again have nine theaters hosting performances.
Next week a few hundred members of The Welcoming Committee will head up to Sunday River in Maine for a fun winter weekend retreat. The weekend is intended for all (avid skiers to avid apres skiers) and the mountain offers plenty of distractions beyond skiing like tubing, hot tubbing and of course eating and drinking. Purchasing your tickets offers you the following for the weekend.

I may be getting a bit ahead of myself, but I just learned that a book came out this past fall called 101 Men In Kilts shot by photographer, Bob McDevitt (check out his website, bobmcdevitt.co.uk). The book which retails for $15.00 on Amazon could make for a great Valentine’s Day gift for the right guy.

Much is being made of the fact that more women are expressing an interest in politics (at all levels, municipal, state and federal) than ever before, but it remains to be seen how many will actually step up to the plate. I hope that this talk becomes a catalyst that will see more women, reaching out to their spouses and families, asking them for help with regards to family responsibilities so they may focus on a career of civil service.
I have come to the conclusion that political progress on issues that matter most to women will only be incremental if women from both political parties do not step forward in large numbers.
I recognize that not all women agree on policy and politics, but greater representation is the key to women advancing their interests whether it is equal pay, better access to healthcare and childcare or reshaping how America interacts with the world. We are a nation of 320+ million people. That means there are enough women qualified to do any job including US Senator and Representative. So I’m asking the women of America to step away from the sheet cake, and step up to the plate in 2018.
