One Today: Richard Blanco

Richard-Blanco-PoetI love poetry even though sometimes I cannot follow or fully appreciate the prose.  Yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration featured Richard Blanco reading his poem One Today to the President and the nation.  Blanco is a Cuban-American who happens to be gay and lives in New England (Maine to be exact).  In lieu of posting the full text (which you can read here), I’ve inserted the video of his reading. His poem stresses unity and the common bonds that touch us all.

Boston Chops eyes a February 5th opening

Boston Chops South EndBoston Chops now lights up the corner of Washington and Union Park Street in the South End with the restaurants newly installed signage.  For those familiar with previous tenants, the dining space has been completely reconfigured, moving the bar from the front of the restaurant to the left side (Union Park Street).  The bar will be among the largest in the neighborhood boasting 30 seats.  In addition to the 110 seat restaurant a 20+ seat patio is also planned to allow patrons the chance to sit outside along Washington Street.

Zagat Boston indicates Boston Chops is targeting Tuesday, February 5th to open, but who can really say with any certainty? Thanks to friend and fellow blogger, Julian, for forwarding the Zagat post.

Opus Affair

Looking for something fun to do tomorrow night?  Opus Affair is hosting January’s monthly get together at the very cool West Bridge in Kendall Square.

Opus AffairWhen: Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 6:00 PM
Where: West Bridge, 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge
Opus Affair is comprised primarily (but not exclusively) of young professionals and artists from the area who meet up each month to socialize.  Keeping with the group’s interest in supporting the local arts community, there is also a charitable drinking game (a.k.a the Punch Bowl Fund) where you may contribute $5 (cash only). In exchange for your contribution, you receive a drink ticket good for a glass of punch and a ballot to vote for one of the three featured arts groups. The organization with the most votes that night gets the money.

This month the Punch Bowl fund will be featuring:
The Fenway Alliance
Collective Creature (a Yes.Oui.Si. project)
MetroWest Opera

Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe

Mass Bearz Tea Dance On Sunday I went to the Mass Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe, which is held the third Sunday of every month. I didn’t know quite what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by how many people were there.  DJ Harrison Carmichael’s blend of disco and pop classics helped me forget it was a Sunday evening.

The next Mass Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe will be on Sunday, February 17th so mark your calendars if you’d like to check this out and head over with a group of friends. I’ve included some photos from yesterday’s tea dance. If you click on the photos the pictures will enlarge.

Patriots are damn handsome

New England PatriotsI’m the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about football. Heck, I intentionally go grocery shopping when my brother tells me the New England Patriots are playing, because I know there will be less people there.

However, it seems to me that a lot of the guys who play for the New England Patriots are damn handsome so maybe I’ll check out the game later today. Pity you really can’t see them under all that padding and tights.

MLK brunch

MLK BrunchFor those of you who have the day off tomorrow, here is a suggestion. I wish I could join you but I’ll be up far earlier and working through the day. However, if I had the day off – I’m sure you’d find me here.

Don’t forget to bring your condiment

Safe SexBosGuy’s Saturday night tip: bring your own condiments.

Trippin’ over Pippin

pippinExcuse the trite headline, but earlier this week I saw Pippin at the American Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) in Cambridge. It is rare to have a local show filled with so many Broadway actors in Boston so when I heard about Pippin’s run I knew I wanted to check it out before it left for Broadway. I am unfamiliar with how this production differs from the original, so I won’t try to pretend I know what I’m talking about other than to say, the show is spectacular.

The music is fantastic but its no surprise considering it was penned by Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked and Godspell), and the cast really does amaze, belting out pitch perfect tunes.  Even I recognized the Bob Fosse choreography I’d heard about prior to seeing the show.  All this comes together to form a very entertaining musical that had me holding my breathe more than once watching the amazing circus-like acrobatics executed by 7 Fingers (a Montreal-based company that is reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil).

Since the show closes this weekend, you’ll need to get tickets (probably for quite a bit more money) when it opens in April at the Music Box Theater on Broadway.  In anticipation of the question if it is worth seeing on Broadway – I’ll keep my answer short and sweet, “Yes”.

US municipal equality index

US Metropolitan Equality MapLate last year, the Human Rights Committee (HRC) in partnership with the Equality Federation Institute and the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, released their 2012 Municipal Equality Index.

The PDF which is easy to read online or download scored 137 cities in the United  States on a multitude of criteria that were combined into six categories.  Eleven cities from seven states achieved a perfect “100” ranking including: Boston and Cambridge, MA – Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, CA – St. Louis, MO – New York City, NY – Portland, OR – Philadelphia, PA – and Seattle, WA.  I’m always circumspect of publications that rank / rate anything and you should be too, but I still find them quite interesting.  You can view the index rankings and read more about this here.
