drink, bar, bartender, cocktailsWinter is here but don’t let the cold keep you at home when there are so many events, parties and more. This week I’d like to give a shout out to the Après Ski Winter Mixer on Wednesday (hosted by Out in Southie, OutRyders and DotOUT) at Bastille Kitchen and on a somewhat related note the Sugarloaf Together ski weekend that starts on Thursday to benefit Equality Maine.

If skiing isn’t your thing perhaps you’d like to show your love and support by attending the Coronation XV: Vintage Hollywood the Golden Age of Glamour which will be a blast or you can join Sergio and me at the Lush Life: Jazz Standards show on Thursday at the Napoleon Room.

On Sunday I’d like to give the Mass Bears and Cubs Sunday brunch at Trophy Room and the Gay Beer Club Sundays which meets later that evening (both are friendly, social groups that do a lot to dispel Boston’s cold reputation).

2019 North American gay ski week calendar

Each January I write about the various ski weeks and weekends that are organized here in New England and North America for those of you who love to take ski vacations. Below I’ve included a handful of such gay ski celebrations. If you enjoy skiing, I’d also like to use this as an opportunity to give a shout out to OutRyders – New England’s largest gay ski club.

Aspen Gay Ski Week: January 13 – 20, 2019
This week long celebration is the biggest and oldest of its kind starting back in 1977 and having grown significantly over the years.

Whistler Pride & Ski Festival: January 20 – 27, 2019
This annual tradition which started in 1992 offers plenty to do and if you are coming from the US at a nice price break with the favorable exchange rate.

Winter Rendezvous at Stowe, VT: January 23 – 27, 2019
This is New England’s largest (and longest running) gay ski week. This year will mark Winter Rendezvous 35th anniversary. Boston’s  gay ski club, OutRyders helps their members organize logistics if you’re interested in this event.

WOW weekend at Sunday River, ME: February 8 – 10, 2019
The Welcoming Committee has created a mini-takeover of the Sunday River Resort for the past six years, even organizing transportation from Boston to make it as easy / convenient as possible for everyone.

Elevation Utah Gay Ski Week at Park City: February 21 – 24, 2019
While Utah isn’t exactly known as the most gay friendly place in America, this will be the 9th anniversary and continues to grow in popularity.

Elevation Mammoth Gay Ski Week: March 13 – 17, 2019
The Elevation Ski Week brand started here at Mammoth Mountain sixteen years ago and attracts mostly a west coast crowd.

Big Gay Jay Weekend at Jay’s Peak, VT: March 22 – 24, 2019
This weekend trip to southern Vermont is organized for and by New England’s gay ski club The OutRyders.

If there is a gay ski week or weekend celebration I’ve overlooked that you would like to share, please leave the name, date and web link in the comments section so people can learn more.

SpeakEasy Stage presents Small Mouth Sounds

boston theater, bosartsIt is opening night for SpeakEasy Stage Company’s production of Small Mouth Sounds, which runs through February 2, 2019. Small Mouth Sounds was a 2015-2016 Off Broadway hit that had two sold out, extended runs in New York City and is now being produced by the SpeakEasy Stage where you can see it at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End.

The show includes a cast of seven and runs for one hour and forty minutes without intermission. It takes place in the overwhelming quiet of the woods. Six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat, and as these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Filled with awkward and insightful humor, the play captures the unique eloquence of a silent retreat and asks how we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us.

Find time to make plans with friends and see this production. Not only will an evening out for dinner (or drinks) and a show be a great way to pass an evening but it will also support a local theater company that is worthy of your patronage.

Alexandra Hotel public meeting is January 9th

south end, historic south end

Alexandra Hotel – October 1899 | Source Wikipedia

The Hotel Alexandra was  built at the end of the 19th century; first opening their doors to the public in 1875. Despite its beautiful and distinctive look, the hotel began to fail in the first half of the 1900s and has been permanently vacant since the early 1990s. The most recent owner, The Church of Scientology, bought the building in 2008, hoping to convert it into a local headquarters, but the property’s poor condition and lack of funds ultimately led the church to sell.

New owners have proposed bringing the historic building back to life as a boutique hotel. Their plans include making this into  a twelve story building, creating  space for a ground floor restaurant and café and a rooftop level bar/restaurant. They will also look to restore the hotel’s facade.  Want to hear more about the developers’ plans?  Attend the Wednesday, January 9th public meeting. You can also submit your comments here.

Vintage gay

This week’s photo comes from Peter Miller who shared this photo to two affectionate soldiers from South America (or so he thinks). Much thanks for sharing Peter. I’m curious if anyone might be able to hazard a guess as to where or when they think this photograph may have been taken?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Joe is a native New Englander who moved to San Francisco a few years ago after eschewing a career in finance that he no longer felt passionate about. He has a website where you can learn more about his philosophy, areas of specialty and more. Dry January

French, FranceOn a whim last year, I decided to abstain from any alcohol through the month of January. I have to admit I was curious if I could make it the full 31-days without drinking anything because I basically drink water, coffee, tea and wine. There were definitely times during the month where this proved challenging but overall, I was really surprised at how easy it was for me to do it. Perhaps it was all my training as a practicing Catholic when I was younger and asked to give up something for the 40-days of Lent that made the 31-days of January seem easy or maybe it was the fact that Sergio rarely drinks. Regardless, I’ve decided to “go dry” once again this month so I apologize in advance to Brix (my favorite wine shop) for the loss in revenue.

To anyone else who may be doing the same, I wish you luck and will have a toast in your honor on Friday, February 1st.

Cheers
