Restaurant review: Southern Proper

Southern Proper opened this March in a new space on Harrison Avenue in the South End. The space is filled with large pine beams meant to be reminiscent of tobacco barns in North Carolina; the source of inspiration for Chef Jason Cheek.

Earlier this year EaterBoston shared beautiful photos of the space which has a ceiling filled with upside down hanging table lamps and eclectic furnishings. Although the look isn’t one I can relate to – I appreciate the thought and effort that went into making the space uniquely their own.

Southern Proper’s menu is divided into several sections including: Snacks which range in price from $5-$16 and include items like Deviled Eggs, Hushpuppies and BBQ Bone Marrow; Farmhouse which range from $12-$16 and include options like Grilled Corn on the Cob and Charred Broccoli & Kale Salad; Meats & Chicken, which are actually two separate sections but self explanatory, ranging in price from  $9 – $34; Seaside with three options ranging from $21-$25; and finally sides which are all $7 and include items like Mac & Cheese, Buttermilk Biscuits and Crispy Corn Bread.

south end dining

Southern Proper’s Broccoli & Kale Salad $14

Sergio and I were lucky enough to get two bar chairs at the end of the long, wrap around bar, which gave us a great view of the space and provided ample people watching. We started our dinner with drinks followed by the Broccoli & Kale Salad, which was delicious but I don’t think it had any kale. The grilled corn and citrus-dressing was excellent and a great first plate.

Southern Proper’s Pulled Pork ( $14)

The next two plates that came out (which Sergio and I shared) included the half order (which by the way is HUGE) of pulled pork served with pickles, pickled onions and cole slaw (shown above) and the Mac & Cheese (shown below).

Of the two plates, I preferred the pulled pork, which the Improper Bostonian raved about and EaterBoston described as “the version to beat” in Boston. The Velveeta used in the Mac & Cheese wasn’t Sergio’s favorite but I enjoyed when accompanied with the pulled pork, but in hindsight, everything probably would go well with Southern Proper’s pulled pork.

Southern Proper’s Mac & Cheese $7

I’m happy to see a Southern cuisine restaurant opening to provide more variety to the neigbhorhood, but the menu options and vibe isn’t really my scene. Having said that, I wish Southern Proper much success.

BosGuy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars, Good.

Out to Succeed: Realising the full potential of your LGBT+ talent

Out to Succeed: Realising the full potential of your LGBT+ talent is new global research that discusses how businesses can succeed in an environment that enables LGBT+ talent to thrive. It asks and answers questions like: What do high potential LGBT+ employees want from their employers? Are businesses delivering? And what more could organisations do to enable LGBT+ talent to succeed? The report also offers five suggestions on how businesses can turn equality into a global reality.

“Diverse stories matter – they’re a crucial part of our audience appeal…the diversity of our programming aligns with our people agenda by encouraging a diverse array of talent to come to Time Warner, and want to stay and prosper”
– Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and CEO, Time Warner

About the research: PwC and Out Leadership conducted a global survey of 231 high-potential LGBT+ employees and 28 corporate leaders from Out Leadership member organisations over the time period of December 2017 to March 2018.

14 Years ago today Massachusetts made history (again)

Gay marriage, same-sex marriage14 Years ago today Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to legalize same sex marriage. Conservatives said Mass. was making a mockery of marriage, yet this state still has the lowest divorce rate in the country.

20 Summers Series hosts Isaac Mizrahi and Alan Cumming

Ptown, 20 SummersProvincetown is first and foremost a summer destination, but the town continues to host interesting programs and events in the Spring and Fall like The Twenty Summers Series at the Hawthorne Barn, which will host Isaac Mizrahi and Alan Cumming for an intriguing evening conversation this Saturday.

If this is the first you’re hearing about this evening, then I am sorry to let you know that the event is sold out, but I wanted to point out that there is more to Provincetown than meets the eye if you’re willing to look beyond the tea dances and breathtaking men who promenade Commercial Street.

You can learn more about the recently renovated Hawthorne Barn and their 20 Summers Series at their website, www.20summers.org.

Yankee Cruising Club

gay bostonDid you know that the Yankee Cruising Club was founded in 1983 with the intention to bring LGBTQ boaters together to meet, make friends and most importantly get out on the water?

Yankee Cruising Club’s next event is this Sunday, May 19th at the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Newport, Rhode Island. If this sounds interesting, click here to visit their event page to learn more.

The social group plans events year round but now that the weather is finally warming up, look for more social programming designed to get out on the water. You can learn more about the group by checking them out online at meetup.com/Yankee-Cruising-Club or on Facebook at Yankee Cruising Club

I want to feature the LGBTQ groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you’d like to have your club / team featured, please email me at bosguymail@gmail.com or via FB messenger.
