Restaurant review: il Casale in Belmont

il Casale BelmontEarlier this month we went to Belmont to visit a friend and have dinner at il Casale in downtown Belmont, MA – a suburb just outside of Boston. The restaurant is part of a small restaurant group that also runs a restaurant by the same name in Lexington as well as Dante’s in Cambridge, MA.

Despite the high ceilings and large dining room, the restaurant exudes a cozy rustic vibe that is in line with the service which isn’t quite fine dining but professional and friendly; clearly this is a neighborhood favorite.  Main plates and pastas are reasonably priced – ranging in the mid $20s and pastas are all available as half portions. Upon taking our seats at a high table near the bar we were greeted by a knowledgeable waiter who took our drink order and brought us warm, homemade bread.  To compliment the bread which smelled heavenly, I ordered the burrata cheese which was heavily seasoned with pepper, oregano and candied pistachios.

The cheese was cool and creamy as one would expect and the pepper and oregano added a nice flavor, but my favorite was the crunch of the candied pistachios which alongside the drizzle of olive oil went very nicely with our warm bread. Needless to say nothing was left when our server cleared the plates.

Following my starter I had high expectations and looked forward to the special of the night which I ordered.  The homemade Mafalade came with a seasoned roasted pork shoulder ragu in olive oil sauce with peas and carrots.  The colors and aroma of this plate created were equaled by their flavor, I’m happy to say.

My fellow diners ordered the gnocchi and grilled cod and they echoed my sentiments about their meals.  The pastas were certainly generous portions, and I ended up bringing about a third of my meal home for left overs, which makes me think unless you are really hungry an appetizer and half portion of il Casale’s pasta is more than enough – making it an even more affordable dining option.

With warmer temperatures now gracing Boston, you can also enjoy dining al fresco at il Casale’s patio, but reservations are strongly recommended no matter when you come to dine since this place seems to be a favorite for locals.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

wineIs that glass of wine worth it?  Sometimes we don’t realize that some of our bad habits and cheat snacks really can add up. If you’re having having trouble losing weight, try adding up the calories from all your guilty pleasures and see in large how many calories it adds up to.

A standard pour of wine has approximately 125 calories.  That means:

  • 1 Glass a night – 861 calories a week and 3,444 a month
  • 2 Glasses a night – 1722 calories a week and 6,888 a month
  • 3 Glasses a night –  2583 calories a week and 10,332 a month

Assuming you are consuming a balanced diet relative to your metabolic rate, and not doing extra workouts this means you will gain at least one pound each month.

Why religious freedom argument is dangerous for Marriage Equality

Following the historic vote in Ireland on marriage equality, cultural conservatives in the US are licking their wounds and they should because the referendum in Ireland mirrors attitudes shared here in the America.  According to polling from Pew Research Center, nearly 60% of American Catholics support marriage equality (up from 34% when same sex marriage was legalized in MA in 2004).

Marriage Equality, same sex marriage, pew researchPew Research Center also recently reported that Millennials overwhelmingly support marriage equality (nearly 70%) and that is significant because this year Millennials will surpass the Baby Boomer generation as the nation’s largest living generation with approximately 81 million born after 1981.  These trends make even religious zealots realize that prayer alone is not going to turn back time (to borrow a line from a Cher song) so they are adopting new language (that can be more palatable to the public) to stem this tide of the pro equality movement.

This is why the bogus “religious freedom” argument is now talked about nonstop by conservatives (and why you’ll hear about “religious freedom” and persecution from Republican Presidential primary candidates ad nauseam). Social conservatives want to position themselves as the victim; this is a tried and true tactic from Conservatives when they lose in the court of public opinion.

Integration is a sinSame sex marriage isn’t the first civil liberty that was opposed based on “religious beliefs” and teachings in the Bible.

The next time you hear someone claiming their ‘religious liberties’ are being trampled upon by “legalizing” gay marriage be sure you address that line of thought immediately – ignoring this gives that line of thought credibility and emboldens those who make this claim. Let’s not forget that gay marriage isn’t the first civil liberty that was opposed based on “religious beliefs” and teachings in the Bible it just happens to be the latest.  Claims that everything from ending segregation to legalizing interracial marriages was against teachings in the Bible and people’s religious convictions.

Ab Soto: Cha Cha Bitch

Ab Soto is a queer artist who first came to my attention earlier this week in an article I read on HuffPost Gay and since watching this video I can’t get it out of my head.  He clearly has a flair for eye-catching fashion and has more wardrobe changes than a Taylor Swift video.  Check this out and get your cha cha on.
