The Welcoming Committee has snagged Orchestra-level seats (front and center) at comedian Fortune Feimster’s show on Pride Saturday, June 13 at 7pm over at the Wilbur Theatre. You may recognize her from her time on Chelsea Lately, (I miss that show) where she mercilessly mocked herself and others. Following the show, TWC will host an after-party at a nearby bar.
Tickets are a steal at just $31 including all fees. Use the link above to get more details about the eventand to get your tickets (while they last).
Last June I wrote the post Wicked Cool: Boston’s very own phantom opera house. The post was about a 650 person theater called Steinert Theater, which first opened in 1896 and was famous for its impeccable acoustics, but was forced to close after Boston’s tragic Coconut Grove fire in 1942.
Developers say the project is complicated and could take 2-3 years to renovate. Long time Boston residents will remember the same rumblings back when the Boston Opera House and Modern Theatre – both on Washington Street – were first rumored to be renovated and reopened to the public. Let’s cross our fingers and hope this can happen. If Steinert Theatre returns to its former glory it would join 9 other Theater houses in Boston’s Theater District including:
Boston Opera House
Colonial Theater
Charles Playhouse
Cutler Majestic Theatre
Modern Theatre at Suffolk
Paramount Theater
Shubert Theatre
Wang Center of Performing Arts
Wilbur Theatre

With summer weather now upon us, I’m often asked for suggestions on day trips or places to visit for an overnight outside of the more obvious gay destinations like Provincetown and Ogunquit. Below are five destinations that are all within a two hour drive of Boston that are not necessarily gay but are welcoming and beautiful destinations in their own right.
Meredith – Lake Winnipesaukee, NH (2 Hour Drive) I grew up spending my summer vacations in Alton Bay at Lake Winnipesaukee and while there are plenty of quaint towns around this lake in the Granite State, Meredith offers plenty to see and do ranging from lake activities, to golfing, hiking, shopping and dining. Meredith Chamber of Commerce Website
Portland, ME (2 Hour Drive) Many guys never drive north of Ogunquit when they visit Maine but just another 45 minutes north is Portland, Maine. Check out the historic waterfront district and do yourself a favor and bring your appetite. Portland has a well-deserved reputation as a Foodie’s town. Condé Nast Restaurant Guide to Portland
Martha’s Vineyard, MA (2 Hours – Drive and Ferry) A year round destination, Martha’s Vineyard may be at its most beautiful in the summer when you can enjoy the island’s spectacular beaches and outdoor activities. The quaint towns on the Vineyard offer great shopping and dining after spending a day at the beach. Martha’s Vineyard Online
Newport, RI (1.5 Hour Drive) One of my favorite destinations in all of New England Newport Harbor offers beautiful views, lovely beaches and a slice of American history that is truly unique and on view when you traverse the 3.5 mile cliff walk. Newport’s downtown has great dining and shopping as well as a lively night life. Discover Newport
Portsmouth, NH (1 Hour Drive) Sandwiched between Boston and Portland, Maine, this quaint seaside village is a quintessential New England town worth the visit. The Market Square is where all the action in this postage-sized town takes place and is chalk full of restaurants, bars and shops. Things to do in Portsmouth
If you have other suggestions on things to do at these destinations or other great places to visit, feel free to share in the comments section.
Yesterday morning Republican Presidential candidate Rand Paul surprised me with the passion which he expressed the sentiments shared above and how vigorously he pushed back when questioned about his foreign policy views which were described as ‘isolationist’.
Boston Pride has done a nice job assembling the official Boston Pride Guide for 2015. The guide fully details all the programs that one can attend ranging from the large Pride Parade on Saturday, June 13th, that is expected to attract 400,000+ spectators and include 25,000 marchers to the less obvious like A Conversation with Pussy Riot at The Wilbur Theatre on Friday June 5th.
If you cannot pick up an actual copy you can still view the calendar of events online at bostonpride.org/calendar. Bay Windows will publish an *unofficial* Guide to all things related to Pride that is available on their website starting tomorrow, Friday, May 29th at www.baywindows.com and will be distributed in hard copy starting next Thursday, June 4th. Be sure to get a copy of this as well since there are many unofficial Pride events – and often these are more fun than the official programs.
