Attention all foodies… The annual Taste of the South End is fast approaching so mark your calendars and purchase your tickets. This year’s program will draw 45 of the neighborhoods’ restaurants to the BCA so you can sample delicious culinary creations that will leave your mouth watering. Even better, by participating you will be supporting a very worthwhile local charity that is near and dear to my heart, The AIDS Action Committee.Be sure to purchase your tickets online – HERE.
This past Friday I surprised a friend who now lives in Austin, TX, and as near as I can tell – he had no idea. As you may recall, I visited this couple back in October. I wrote about that trip and included some photos in my entry, Weekend in Austin. The birthday weekend was filled with a lot of laughing, eating, drinking (and crashing from either too much eating or simple exhaustion). Laura and Brian certainly pulled out all the stops, and I shudder to think how many empty beer and wine bottles are sitting at this moment in their recycle bin on the sidewalk. No doubt the neighbors must be seriously considering an intervention. However in their defense – there were a lot of us at the house. I’ve included a group photo from Saturday night after we gorged ourselves at a smokehouse / BBQ called the Salt Lick.
Brian, I’d like to wish you a year of good health and happiness, and Laura thank you for all your hard work – it was fantastic, despite some bone-chilling temperatures (check out the photo below to see what cities were actually warmer than Austin on Brian’s birthday). Lastly to the friends from San Francisco, Houston and elsewhere it was a pleasure to meet you and I hope to see you again soon.
The annual Boxing Day dinner party my friend hosts was fantastic. This year there were a few more faces and it had a true internationl flair with our additional houseguests Joanna from Australia and Alicia from France joining the party. I’ve included a photo album from last night’s festivities. If you have speakers, turn them on to enjoy the cheesy holiday music.

Pho Republique is leaving the South End – it is confirmed.
Last night I grabbed a bite to eat at Pho Republique – a south end restaurant which has stood the test of time both in its longevity and its ability to distinguish itself. This southeast Asian restaurant really has no equal in the neighborhood and is one of my absolute favorites. I regularly order take out from them so you can imagine how sad I was to learn that the owner has decided to close at the end of December and relocate.
Although there is an outside possibility that Pho will remain in the South End, the general concensus from the staff was the owner wants to relocate in Cambridge. A larger space that can also provide live music is what they want. Apparently the Bombay Club a cambridge-based restaurant will go into Pho’s space, which I suppose is good news because I would hate to see the location vacant for long, but I’ll definitely be sorry to see Pho go.

Back in April I mentioned buzz about the fate of the space occupied by a restaurant that had recently closed in my entry, South End rumor new owners have bought space formerly known as Dish.
On Friday, June 12 – Boston Restaurant Talk – wrote that Chef Ken Oringer, probably best known for his signature BackBay restaurant, Clio, will open his 6th restaurant in the city and his 2nd in the South End in the space once occupied by The Dish. According to the Boston Restaurant Blog, the restaurant will be called Coppa and is expected to open in August. The restaurant will feature a wine bar and serve small dishes that feature locally grown ingredients.
The Dish was a casual and friendly restaurant with a patio that seated more than the restaurant could hold inside. I hope Ken can take this tiny footprint of a restaurant and turn it into a viable business that stays connected to the neighborhood. He’s shown he knows how to do this. After all his first restaurant in the South End, Toro, is only a bit larger than Coppa.

The other night Wallpaper magazine hosted a party at banQ, to celebrate the South End eatery’s designation as “Best New Restaurant in the World.” While I’m a fan of the restaurant and love the location just one block from my house, I’m not sure I would classify the place as the best in the world – after all I have not eaten everywhere in the world (yet). However, I’m glad to see a new restaurant getting some recognition and wish them continued success.

There is a rumor that the restaurant space occupied by The Dish until it closed in January of this year, has recently been sold. The Dish was a popular neighborhood restaurant on the corner of Shawmut and Milford Street but it’s tiny size probably worked against it during the colder months when their street patio was not available for patrons. I’m hopeful that another eatery will open in its place. Perhaps a delicious sandwich shop or bakery to compliment Formaggio’s across the street.

The Taste of the South End
Last month I wrote about the AIDS Action Committee fundraiser, Taste of the South End. This is one of my favorite fundraisers, and I try to attend it every year.
I was surprised when a friend sent me this video from YouTube. At the end your’s truly makes an appearance. True to form, I’m shoving food down my throat. However the memories of the shrimp ceviche tacos from 28 degrees are happy ones so I don’t mind.
The Men’s Event
This Saturday, I will be joined by friends and nearly 1,500 Gay men as we all descend upon the Marriott Copley to attend the Fenway Health Center’s annual black-tie extravaganza, otherwise known as The Men’s Event.
If you don’t have plans as yet – it is a great time and money goes to a very worthwhile organization. You can link to the Fenway homepage and still buy tickets if you like.

In the summer of 2008, I wrote in my blog that the worst kept secret in the neighborhood was that Stephanie’s would be opening a second location called Stephi’s on Tremont in the space formerly occupied by The Garden of Eden.
The 60+ seat restaurant opened earlier this month and is a welcome addition to the South End. The menu is very similar but not an exact replica of Stephanie’s on Newbury, the bar is spacious with two televisions and the seating is comfortable. Stephi’s website is www.stephisontremont.com. Unfortunately, the website does not have its menu online and refers you to it’s sister restaurant website www.stephaniesonnewbury.com, but I’m sure that will be updated.
It is hard to imagine the space as it existed at The Garden of Eden before it closed in May 2008, because the entire space has been redesigned – allowing for more seating (and more comfortable seating). I expect this new restaurant to be quite popular – especially when the warmer weather arrives and you can dine al fresco.

This was the view from our hotel room in Puerto Rico. On this visit we decided to stay at La Concha Resort (a Renaissance property that opened in 2008). I would highly recommend this location for anyone who enjoys nightlife since the hotel lobby bar proved to be one of the most fun and popular bars in San Juan. The DJ plays late into the night great music I would love to hear Boston clubs playing. I’ve included a few photos of the resort and hotel.

Aside from keeping busy doing nothing we also ate very well. Many of our friends on previous visits had stayed in the Isla Verde section of San Juan which has a large beach and is a bit closer to the airport, but La Concha is located in Condado – a 15 minute drive from the airport and a bit closer to Old San Juan. This appears to be an affluent neighborhood with many great restaurants. I won’t go into too much detail with each but if one enjoys Asian cuisine then Budatai which is located across the street is a must. Additionally, we ate at Ummo (an Argentinian steak house), Jam (a funky Caribbean inspired menu) and Koco in the beautiful El San Juan Hotel and Casino. All of these places were worth the visit.
The hotel also had a sandwich shop called Sidewalk and there is a great Puerto Rican restaurant for cheap eats and hearty breakfasts near by called Pelayo which we visited each morning. All of these suggestions were provided by the hotel’s concierge who did a wonderful job of listening to what we wanted and making excellent suggestions.
I’ve returned from our 4-night minivaction feeling refreshed and alive. Now I hope the feeling can last so I can avoid contracting another bout of GetMeTheHellOutOfHere Syndrome.
Yesterday, December 26th was Boxing Day, and a close friend originally from Manchester, U.K. who now calls Boston her home, hosted an intimate dinner party in honor of the holiday. Boxing Day is a ‘bank holiday’ in the U.K. and is widely celebrated in many Commonwealth Nations (e.g. Canada, Australia, etc…)
I’m not sure when Boxing Day became an official banking holiday but my friend told me that it was traditionally observed by the wealthy in England to provide gifts to the less fortunate.
However, now most people celebrate with friends or shop for post-holiday sales. My friend used the occassion this year to host a fun dinner party complete with a competitive game of Twister. The fact that our bellies were full and more empty bottles of wine than I’m willing to admit were strewn through out her apartment meant the game only lasted two or three spins before someone would fall and knock everyone over. I vaguely remember falling but have a very sore spot on my knee to remind me should I forget that part of the evening. I’m hoping that this dinner party becomes a holiday tradition my friend wants to repeat. It was a wonderful introduction to the holiday and a great way to celebrate Boxing Day.
Boston’s first snowfall started at 2:00pm on the Friday before Christmas and while I’m unsure of the exact total of the fluffy white stuff there is plenty to guarantee a white Christmas. Most businesses sent employees home early and the effects of that were obvious in the South End where I live. Retailers, banks and even restaurants closed early either out of safety concerns for their employees or because the powerful storm would not make it worthwhile to remain open.
Earlier this evening I walked down Washington Street which was absolutely beautiful in its near deserted state. If it had not been for all the snow blowing around making it difficult to walk, I probably would have stayed out longer. For the most part only dinner-delivery drivers, plow trucks and Silver Line buses were on the road. Restaurants were mostly quiet (Union was actually closed) belying the fact that it was a Friday during the holiday season.
I (accompanied with my friends) stomped into Pho Republique for a dinner. To provide an idea of both how much snow was billowing down Washington Street and show how quiet the restaurants were earlier this evening I’ve included a picture of the restaurant looking out on to Washington Street.

I generally don’t care for snow, but I have to admit it is fun when Boston has this deserted feeling and only those who live in the neighborhood are out and about. It is also nice to have this kind of storm where the snow is fluffy and white – not mixed with ice or freezing rain. On our walk home, my partner channeled his inner child and made a snow angel. I even showed my partner and our friend (both originally from Brazil) how to make a snow ball.

Other people in the neighborhood were obviously channeling similar energies. The picture below shows a handful of guys out in front of my apartment in the BSC parking lot in a large snowball fight that seemed more filled with shouts and laughs than actual snowballs.

The forecast through the rest of the weekend is for more snow and cold temperatures. I am curious to find out how much snow actually does end up falling in Boston. I would guess that we have 6″ – 7″ total right now, but it could be more. There are better pictures on The Boston Globe’s website, Boston.com which can be viewed by linking here. Interestingly, Boston.com also has a delicious guide to some of the city’s best places to get hot chocolate. If this weather persists, I might just be compelled to try a few of these places. If you too like hot chocolate you can see the Globe’s picks here.
