When was your gay adolescence?

Have you heard of the movie Beginners directed by Mike Mills and starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer? The movie is based on Mike Mill’s real life and his relationship with his Dad who at the ripe age of 70 (and 6-mos after his wife’s passing) reveals that he’s gay. The movie chronicles the father’s exuberant embracing of his ‘new gay life’ and Mike’s relationship with his Dad as well as his new girlfriend.

It got me to thinking when I first came out in my late 20s and the ‘exuberance’ or rush that I felt. I could totally relate to this 70 year old man played by Christopher Plummer. Watching an interview with Mike Mills, he referred to the phenomenon as a second or ‘gay adolescence’, which I thought was a perfect term. For many people who come out later in life it does seem like they go through a second adolescence filled with boy crushes, drama and a lot of emotional energy.

Regardless of whether you’ve heard the term second adolescence or gay adolescence. Did you come out after your teenage years? And if so, did you also enjoy an intense second ‘gay adolescence’? Do tell…
Thanks to Jen on twitter who alerted me to a NPR interview of the director you can watch here.

The handsome guy posted at the beginning of the post has nothing to do with the movie but would be just the kind of guy who would have stopped me dead in my tracks. I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this picture and it seems that although my ‘gay adolescence’ is some years behind me now; some things never go away. I like that I remain a bit boy crazy.

Know your gay history w/ Varla Jean Merman

Varla is the bastard, love child of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman and one of my favorite drag queens. Every year she has one of the best shows in Provincetown. If you won’t be able to make it to Ptown this year, you can see a collection of her videos on her YouTube channel.

A few years ago Varla created a video called Varla Jean Merman’s Stonewall for the gay cable TV channel, Logo. Since its Pride Month, I thought I’d share this entertaining video for all those unfamiliar with how Pride came to be celebrated in the month of June. Apologies that the resolution of this video isn’t better.

AIDS Walk Boston – Sunday June 5th

AIDS is the leading cause of death for people in MA (ages of 25-44)
Thank goodness for The AIDS Action Committee which hosts AIDS Walk Boston each year. Its too easy to forget and sometimes too uncomfortable to remember the legacy of AIDS. Its like an ugly blemish you want to hide and forget about. In the 80s while tens of thousands of people were afflicted with AIDS / HIV our government was too squeamish to provide either the support services or educate people on how to protect themselves. Now some 30 years later we know better but AIDS remains and continues to spread. Betty Byrnes a long time AIDS activist and mother reminds us why its important and how we can help make a difference.

If you can not join the 30,000+ who will join in the walk through Boston, Brookline and Cambridge on Sunday morning, won’t you consider sponsoring a walker or making an independent donation to the organization? You can set up your own page in just moments or make a donation here.

Sam Maden – A GLBT ally who won’t be ignored

With summer so close, bullying in schools may not seem as pressing, but that’s not how Sam Maden, a 12 year old from Nashua, NH sees it. This young man has started a petition asking the Boston Red Sox to make an “It Gets Better” video. Apparently the idea came after his 43 year old uncle Chris died unexpectedly. Chris had given Sam a necklace from the Trevor Project, and according to Sam’s mother, Sam wears it every day in memory of his uncle.

Looking to local sports heroes to speak up for LGBT youth and to end bullying seems like a brilliant idea considering the lingering reputation of homophobia linked to many sports organizations. I don’t know about you but I take great heart that such a young man can be so passionate about such a worthwhile cause. Who knows if the Red Sox will heed Sam’s petition but I would certainly appreciate it if you would help spread the word and help Sam’s wish come true.
How can you help? Sign his petition here (it only takes a minute) and spread the word.

Men of Twitter

I’m a fan of Twitter. I love how quick and easy it is to use and connect with people. Another perk is what I’ll refer to as the “Men of Twitter” since there are so many handsome guys. Adding to their attraction is the fact they only talk in 140 characters.

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles that catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome and if you’d like to follow me, you can find me at @BosGuy. Below are a few more #MenOfTwitter you may want to follow.
ZackAcland – This handsome Australian tweets from Melbourne (one of my favorite places in the world). I’ve included a self-pic Zack took from this week while he was visiting Chicago for IML. Check out this flirtatious Aussie. I hope you enjoy following him as much as I do.

AlphaTango737 – Justin is a model who lives in Long Island. He’s incredibly active on Twitter and quite friendly. I’ve ended up following a few people I’ve seen him chatting with on Twitter.

Aeeron – This 20 year old from London has unbelievably beautiful eyes. He also happens to be quite funny tweeting things like “Are there many female artists out today that don’t need to release amateur porn music videos in order to sell music?

NoH8 Boston / New England Video

Thank you to my friend Lenny who alerted me to this video. You can check out his blog here. And thanks to Jay Asuncion who created this fantastic video montage of NOH8 Boston/New England.

NoH8

Back in March, celebrity photographer, Adam Bouska, came to Boston to help raise awareness of the NoH8 campaign. Sergio and I had so much fun meeting people while we waited for our pictures to be taken. Today I received my photograph and I have to admit I couldn’t be happier. If you’d like to read about the photo shoot you can link here.

If you’d like to learn more about the NoH8 Campaign you can link here.

Sergio also had an individual photograph taken and I think he looks great.

BigMuscleHawk From a purely superficial stand point, how could I not include Christopher a.k.a. BigMuscleHawk? This handsome southern Californian profile suggest viewer discretion is advised but his tweets are more conversational. Like me, he had a fantastic time tweeting about the recent Kylie show which just happened in Los Angeles.

TheCowlicker or Mike as his friends call him lives in the U.K. and is a very funny guy. To give you a sense of Mike’s humor, check out this limited time offer he posted on Twitter.

Thursday night means Noche

I’m not sure how it happened… Perhaps it was back when the charming bartender Adam came over to Noche to tend bar? However, the “how” is no longer relevant. What does matter is it is Thursday and for the few gay men who still call the South End “home” – this is the bar to be. Cocktails flow, conversation carries and the people watching simply doesn’t get any better. The picture of the empty bar provided below will be chalk full of guys of all ages tonight. A recent influx of Boston’s version of Bridge-N-Tunnel crowd has not ruined the atmosphere, but there has been a noticeable increase over the past few months. Good thing that the bartenders are so handsome and quick with the pour. If you happen to find yourself in Boston this Thursday and are wondering where to go, why don’t you join me and check it out.

Rick Welts – Phoenix Suns President says "I’m Gay"

In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, Rick Welts – Phoenix Suns President – explained why he chose such a public forum to announce his sexual orientation. In the interview he addresses what it was like working in the NBA while losing his life-partner to AIDS in the 80s and why he chose to come out ahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gift this point. You can read the full interview here.

“The other was if there was a chance to do some good for people, young people, who are struggling with their own issues and wondering whether or not they could pursue their passions and have a chance to have a successful career, whether that was team sports or something else.”
– Suns president Rick Welts on reason for publicly revealing he is gay

(Thanks lil’ brother for reminding me about this story.)

HeyItsUrban This guy may be the most active person I follow on twitter. His interests are varied and he has more conversations than I can follow. Despite the fact that he’s prone to wishing the Boston Bruins ill, his gorgeous blue eyes make me refuse to think ill of him.

Mkurkowski Check out this handsome Bostonian. (Yet another blue-eyed babe.) I’ve met Matt in person and he’s a sweetheart. This photographer always has something to say on Twitter and it’s usually something fairly humorous. Trust me, you’ll enjoy following this handsome guy.

WesPine The fact that this 20-something San Franciscan is taken does not diminish his allure. Half of Wes’ tweets are about places he’s currently visiting, which I rarely recognize since I live in Boston, but it doesn’t stop me from checking out what he’s up to… what can I say, he’s handsome, I can’t help myself.

ColeStreets twitter profile claims he loves life, french fries and hot boys. Well Cole, I’d have to add you to that list because I love observing your tweets to the many sexy men who follow you on twitter. I never get tired of reading what you are up to (or with whom).

LargeTony living large with Tony, quite possibly the sweetest guy in all of TN. This man is full of surprises. His blog entries more closely resemble poetry, but as many of you know there’s a more playful side to Tony which he shares on Twitter and his Tumblr site.
AlekandSteph bring a sense of style to twitter with their tweets of luxurious destinations and objects of desire which they include in their online magazines, www.Bellomag.com and www.ohlalamag.com. As fashion photographers, they bring a degree of sophistication and fantasy that I love.

Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar

It’s the first Friday of the month so that means it’s also Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar night when groups of young gay men overtake a traditionally straight bar and make it gay for just one evening.

Tonight’s impromptu take over will occur in the Fenway at An Tua Nua, located between the Kenmore and Fenway MBTA stop on the green line. Guys will start arriving after 9PM. Don’t be too fashionably late otherwise you may find yourself standing in line rather than enjoying the company inside. Learn more about Boston Guerrilla Queer Bar.

Boston’s favorite same sex couple return

Earlier today Boston’s favorite same sex couple returned to the Boston Public Garden. Romeo & Juliet, the two graceful swans that make the pond in the Public Garden their home are back. Back in 2005 (just a year after same sex marriage was legalized in MA) it was learned that Romeo is in fact a female, which caused many conservatives who like to scream about how unnatural homosexuality is to cry foul (or was it fowl?)!

According to the zoo keepers who watch over the couple in the winter months, the two swans have been nesting together for approximately 10 years so if you should find yourself in Boston, head over to the Boston Public Gardens and congratulate the city’s favorite lesbians on their milestone anniversary. We should all be so lucky (not to mention to have such a chic address).

I first posted this on my blog back in 2009, and since then, I’ve seen this make the rounds on the web. However, I still think this is hilarious.

If you find yourself at a Pride Rally or Gay Marriage Rally this summer (and you know there will be guys like this there)… Maybe this is something to consider. I know I wish I had thought of this back in 2003 when I was down at the Massachusetts State House to show my support for same-sex marriage.
