Group asks Amazon to focus HQ2 search on states that don’t discriminate against LGBTQ

Amazon HQ2Most people are aware of the stroke of Public Relations brilliance that is Amazon’s search for second headquarters (HQ2). Cities have lined up and prostrated themselves for the chance to bring what is expected to be tens of thousands of well-paying jobs at Amazon’s HQ2. Few cities in America have followed this story more closely than Boston, which continues to be named as a top contender, despite initial claims from some that the city couldn’t compete.

Who can say where Amazon will set up shop and what sort of criteria they will use as a determining factor, but last week a gay-rights advocate group started a campaign called “No Gay? No Way!” to bring attention to states bidding for HQ2 who have antiquated and in some cases anti-LGBTQ laws on their books. They are asking Amazon not to set up their HQ2 in a state that does not protect  employees from discrimination for their sexual orientation or gender identity.no gay? no way!, amazon headquarters, Amazon HQ2Although nobody knows for certain the three cities most often referenced as being atop Amazon’s list include Atlanta, Austin and Boston. However, of those three cities, only Boston resides in a state that has fair and equal laws protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

This activist group is planning to demonstrate near Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle tomorrow, Thursday, February 8th, just as the company prepares to issue its Q4 earnings. The group has hired a plane to fly overhead trailing a “No gay? No way!” banner and is placing billboards on trucks driving through Seattle as well as online ads saying “Hey, Alexa? Why would Amazon even consider HQ2 in a state that discriminates against LGBT people?”

What to do this weekend

handsome, hunk, gay, muscles, sportsThere is a lot happening in Boston, but everyone (that is except Sergio and I) is talking about the Super Bowl – or as I’m referring to it, “the JT show”.

If you’d like to watch the game at a local bar, my advice would be to arrive early since they will fill quickly. Many will gather at The Alley and Trophy Room, but no gay bar will be busier than Cathedral Station Superbowl Party LII, which starts at 3PM on Sunday. They also have a Super Bowl Pre Party on Friday evening to get you pumped for the main event on Sunday.

The Welcoming Committee

The Welcoming CommitteeThe Welcoming Committee (a.k.a. TWC) is a social group that believes in (and works to) broaden the spectrum of what gay life has to offer. Staff and volunteers help create and enrich our local community by bringing people together and organizing programs that go beyond traditional gay venues. Their events include everything from social mixers to organizing meet ups at sports events and even planning trips like next week’s WoW weekend at Sunday River. The organization is mostly comprised of 20- and 30-somethings but all are welcome.

You can learn more about TWC by visiting, thewelcomingcommittee.com and liking their Facebook page. One of their signature events is the monthly Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB for short) which happens the first Friday of every month.

Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018 I want to feature the many groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you would like to have your club / team featured please reach out to me.

Purchasing your tickets offers you the following for the weekend.

What’s Included

  • 2 nights at Sunday River Grand Summit Hotel
  • Transportation between Boston and Sunday River
  • A welcome snack bar and party

Netflix brings back Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

What is old is new again; first it was announced that Will & Grace would return to NBC then ABC said it was bringing back its popular show Roseanne. Now Netflix has revived the Bravo TV series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but this time with a new cast and in a new city.

Moving from the more politically progressive northeast this new cast will be based in Atlanta and roam Dixie. The new Fab Five includes Bobby Berk as the show’s design expert; Karamo Brown will be the cast’s cultural attache (so to speak); Antoni Porowski will manage all things related to food and wine; Jonathan Van Ness is responsible for personal grooming; and Tan France will lead the charge in the fashion department.

The Netflix teaser that dropped earlier this week opens with the lines, “The original show was fighting for tolerance. Our fight is for acceptance.” I’m not sure I really agree with that but you get the gist of this light-hearted formulaic series that will try to make America a little more accepting (and hopefully more polite) – one makeover at a time.

Check’em out on Netflix here: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
