The 30 ultimate Madonna singles

MadonnaIn honor of the fact that this weekend marks the 30th anniversary of Madonna’s first hit song, “Holiday”, Boston Globe writer, Scott Kearnan, has written a tribute post, The 30 Ultimate Madonna Singles.

It would be tough for me to decide what would be in my top 30 list but the very fact that she has more than 30 legitimate hits is a testament to her longevity and success as a performing artist.  I can’t think of a significant milestone in my life that occurred without Madonna’s music somewhere there in the background; it is probably why she’ll go down as my favorite artist of all time.

SYTYCD

Jenna and Mark All Star SYTYCDEarlier this week So You Think You Can Dance – SYTYCD – Season 10 concluded and although I didn’t watch as many shows as in years past, I was blown away by this 90-second dance routine with Jenna and Mark.  I wish I was this creatively cool.

#BlurredBynes parody video

Amanda Bynes ParodyThe crazy drag queen trio that brought you the iconic “Boy Is A Bottom has just posted another music video on YouTube, and this time they’re singing about Amanda Bynes.

Willam and Detox of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” along with Vicky Vox, also known as DWV, have re-twerked Robin Thicke’s summer anthem “Blurred Lines” in a parody of Amanda Bynes’ Tweets.

Hanging with Lea Delaria

ProvincetownLast Friday while I was sitting down at the Aqua Bar enjoying a cold beer, I heard a familiar voice from behind me ask, “Is this seat taken?” When I looked over I saw it was Lea Delaria.  I shared the seat but minded my own business but an hour later when I bumped into her on Commercial Street and she smiled back, I asked if she’d mind posing for a photo.  Guess what she said. 🙂

Same Love wins at VMAs

MTV video awardsMacklemore with Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert won video with the best social message at the MTV Music Awards tonight.  I’ve loved this song since I first heard it and cannot be happier for the recognition it received tonight.

Christina Bianco does diva impressions of Total Eclipse of the Heart

Christina BiancoEarlier this summer Christina Bianco sang Bonnie Tyler’s 1980s hit ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart‘ at 54 Below – a Midtown cabaret bar in NYC. Unlike past covers you may have heard, Christina sings the Bonnie Tyler hit as nearly 20 different divas. Check it out. She impersonates some divas better than others but I have to give her props.

Ross Matthews: Hello Ross

Ross-MathewsI’ve enjoyed watching comedian, Ross Mathews, since he first appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2001 as “Ross the Intern”.  Since then he has appeared on a variety of television shows, but is most regularly seen on the funny Chelsea Lately show on E TV.

Starting next month Ross Matthews will have his self-titled show, Hello Ross, also on E TV. The show will feature Ross talking about – what else? – but pop culture.  As I said, I’m a fan of this funny guy and if you are too then you may want to check out Metro Source magazine interview of Ross which you can read here.

Back to the future

Back to the futureMy brother-in-law sent me this photograph of the car in front of him.  It was spotted north of Boston on I-93 earlier this afternoon.

American Hustle

Bradley Cooper American HustleAmerican Hustle, which opens in December, is yet another movie filmed here in Boston.  Set in Camden, NJ, the movie is about a con artist and his partner who were forced to work with federal agents.  American Hustle stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Renner.

Bostonians will recognize scenes in the trailer from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boylston Street and the Fairmont Copley Hotel.

Vintage hunk

paul_newmanWhile scanning Gay.net earlier this week I stumbled upon their post, Vintage Hunk: Paul Newman.

There are few actors who I can think of who aged as gracefully as Paul Newman but then again so few are as blessed genetically. Paul Newman was able to turn heads nearly his entire adult life.

He and Elizabeth Taylor were so beautiful on screen together in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, I have to wonder why movie studio executives didn’t make them work together more often.

Who / which leading actors from years past would you label as a “Vintage Hunk”?

Kristin Chenoweth’s Anthony Weiner ‘Popular’ Parody

Kristin-ChenowethDid you happen to catch Broadway superstar Kristin Chenowith on the Jay Leno Tonight Show on Tuesday?  She was hilarious as usual, but her performance at the end of the show really had me laughing out loud.  Singing to the tune of Popular from the Tony Award winning musical, Wicked, Ms. Chenowith schools Anthony Weiner on how to be the “right kind of popular.”

Madonna

MadonnaJust a few days ago I was reminded by Joe.My.God that Madonna’s first album was released three decades ago.  Want to make me feel old – keep reminding me of that fact. I have to admit over the years I’ve taken flak for my fascination with Madonna, but I really don’t care. I still love her music.

Rolling Stone had a bunch to say about the album, but this is the line that stuck with me “Madonna issues an irresistible invitation to the dance.”  The amazing thing is I think she still does even though her contemporaries are all but gone.

Here is one of my favorite songs from that album.

Song of the summer: Daft Punk – Get Lucky

daft-punk-get-luckyIf you are like me, it seems like every summer there is a song that you hear so often you can’t help but associate it with the season.  From the first moment I heard this song by Daft Punk I was hooked.
