Flashback Friday: V-66

This week’s post references Boston’s first (and to my knowledge only) 24 hour music television channel called V-66 which aired for the first time in February 1985. The station went live just as I was starting high school and was responsible for turning me on to the Boston music scene. V-66 was often referred to as the poor man’s MTV since it was not a cable TV station so they played a heavy rotation of local bands nobody outside of Boston knew, such as Til Tuesday, Face to Face and New Man.

YouTube has a great clip that shows some of the station’s VJs and has vintage footage. Link here to see the clip.

Gold Dust Orphans are at it again…

Ryan Landry’s group of campy misfits announced their next show will be a take off of the Steinbeck classic, Of Mice and Men. I was never a fan of Steinbeck’s stories so I’m curious how Landry will twist this story. His last play, All About Christmas Eve, was really fantastic and will be tough to beat.

The Gold Dust Orphan website provides the following storyline to entice people to come and see the show.

“Of Mice and Mink” tells the tragi-comic story of Georgie (Larry Coen) and Linda (Rick Park), two “not so pretty” hookers living through the current “not so great” depression without a friend to lean on or a pot to piss in. Entertaining delusions of one day “getting out” our heroines soon arrive at “Lula Mae’s Cat Ranch,” a bottom of the barrel brothel on “the wrongest” side of town. The situations and characters they find there prove less than desirable and while Georgie tries her best to keep their “thin web of dreams” from breaking. Linda, on the other hand, (a woman-child in the body of a dangerously powerful “She Hulk”) is no help at all. Naturally, when tragedy strikes, it seems obvious that the mentally challenged Linda is responsible. Or is she? The answer to that question and others are the surprises that await you in “Of Mice and Mink”.

Sounds good to me. Showtime is 8pm and runs from Friday, February 20th through Sunday, March 15th. Tickets can be purchased online at TheaterMania or by phone at 866-811-4111 – $30.00.

Really? SNL on Michael Phelps

I agree with everything Seth Myers has to say about this non-controversy, and oh yeah, leave Michael Phelps alone.

Shepard Fairey exhibit at the ICA

Fairey’s works have come to the Institute of Contemprary Art (ICA), and I am looking forward to visiting the museum’s West Gallery to see the exhibit entitled, “Supply and Demand”.

The ICA website refers to, Shepard Fairey as “one of the most influential street artists of our time”. However, I like him because of his use of bold colors and iconic imagery. I remember the first time I saw his Obey poster and more recently his Obama Hope image, which was plastered through out Boston and catapulted Fairey’s name into the general public. However, you need not trust my untrained eye or juvenile descriptions of his work, The Boston Globe review of the exhibit is filled with praise. You can read the full review here.

I will admit that I prefer going to Boston’s museums in the colder months because it is a way to forget about the miserable weather and get out of the house. If you’ve never been to the ICA or if it has been awhile since your last visit – check out this exhibit and let me know what you think. The exhibit opened last week and will run through mid-August.

Catherine Tate "Translator"

I love Catherine Tate the English comedian and actress. She is on nearly every show broadcast on BBC.

However, I really love her comedy shows where she plays various characters ranging from the Ulster Mother with a gay son to the Manchester Teenager who is not “bothered”.

Here is a video courtesy of Youtube which is a personal favorite.

Fox and Friends LOVES Ann Coulter

Just a quick follow up to the news that Ms. Coulter was banned from NBC, which the Drudge Report was first to post yesterday. This morning the hate-spewing siren was on Fox and Friends show. The interview mostly consisted of Ann bemoaning how unfairly she has been treated and how Liberals are to blame for all of the U.S. ills. Co-anchors, Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade, spent most of their time drooling and praising the conservative pin-up.

On a side note, the Fox “News” show was commenting through out the morning on how to be more tolerant of teasing in schools to teach child how to deal with adversity. Co-anchor, Gretchen Carlson, has shared earlier in the program how she was taunted by children when she was young and called “Goal-Post Gretchen” due to a large gap in her teeth. So as the interview with Ms. Coulter was nearinng its end, co-anchor, Steve Doocy, inquired if she had any nicknames growing up that had caused her distress. The question caught Ms. Coulter off-guard but the best part of the question was Gretchen’s quick response, “She’s had plenty of names as an adult.” Ain’t that the truth.

Senator Franken?

Here is a brief clip of the next Senator from Minnesota, Al Franken, sparring with Hannibal Lector (a.k.a. Ann Coulter) at a forum in CT in 2007.

Many thanks to Towleroad for this classic.

I love the holidays

The Christmas holiday is fast approaching and today is really the last day of work I have until the new year. I am so excited that I will have the next 12 days off it makes me forget how freezing cold it is here in Boston right now and want to dance.

However, since it is well documented that I have no rhythym, I’ll let the guys from Brasil in this video do all the dancing for me. We both seem to share a sense of excitement and contentment at the moment – they are just more expressive and better at showing this through dance.

You can see scores of Brasilians doing this and variations of this dance on YouTube if you type in the search feature, “Cueca Funk”. This particular video which was posted on YouTube more than a year ago has had more than 800,000 hits. I can see why… eat your heart out Dancing with the Stars.

This video was also recently posted on a blog I enjoy reading, Wicked Gay Blog, entitled “Parar relembrar porque amamos o Brasil” which translates to “to remember why we love Brasil”… enough said.

Jon Stewart and Mike Huckabee

As shared in this week’s Bay Windows.

“I think you are looking at sexuality and not attributes, and it’s odd because the conservative mantra is a “meritocracy”, and I think what you are suggesting is the fact that being gay parents makes you not as good as others and I would suggest that a gay, loving family with a financially stable background beats the hell out of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline any day of the week.” – Jon Stewart, discussing same-sex marriage and parenting with Baptist minister and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, The Daily Show, Dec. 9.

Ann Coulter meets karma

The NY Post is reporting that Ann Coulter´s mouth has been wired shut. I find that ironic to the point of hilarity. Ms Coulter has finally done to herself what nobody in the media has ever been able to do – shut her up. I would love someone to walk up to Hannibal lector (my temporary pet name for Ann Coulter) and ask her if she believes in karma.

All About Christmas Eve – New Ryan Landry Play

The Gold Dust Orphans announced that the holiday show this year will be “All About Christmas Eve”. Spoofing one of the best Bette Davis movies of all times.

The e-mail announcing the new show describes the program as set in Boston at Christmas time in 1950. The story starts by introducing the audience to an aging actress named Margo Channing… Well you get the story. It will be hard to out-do his summer hit Whizzin’ which played both here in Boston and in Provincetown, but there is plenty of material based on the movie “All about Eve” and I have high hopes. I’ll definitely be at the front of the line when the show hits “The Ramrod Performing Arts Center” at Machine at 154 Boylston Street in the Fenway.

Show Dates: December 5th – January 3rd with performances on Friday and Saturday nights only.

Tickets: $30 for general seating, cash at the door. Or $28 if purchased online at: http://www.theatermania.com. Dial 1-866-811-4111 for more on Theatermania.

Silverman signs book deal

The New York Times is reporting that Sarah Silverman has closed on a book deal with HarperCollins. A release date has not been revealed but suffice it to say with everything that has happened in 2008 – the on and off nature of her relationship with Jimmy Kimmel, the love affair with Matt Damon and all the schlepping she did to Florida for Obama – she will certainly have plenty of material.

Seth Meyers: Short and Curly

To lighten the mood on election day,I thought I would share this video which I initially saw on OMG! It is an SNL video that made me laugh and I hope will for you too. Way to go Seth Meyers.

Take on Me: literal video version

My friend Tom forward me a link from this site called forward.com. Both of us were HUGE fans of Aha in the 80s and even bigger fans of the video, Take on Me, because at the time it was unlike anything being played on MTV. Anyway, this spoof, appropriately named “Take on Me: literal video version” was well done and made me laugh when I watched it so I thought I would post it on my blog to share. What do you think?
