Boston Sports Bars

Some of Boston’s best sports bars are located just outside Fenway Park and over by the Boston Garden. For many people who cannot get tickets to a game, heading to one of the bars there is the next best thing. However, Boston is a great sports town with a long and proud history of supporting their local professional and college sporting teams. As a result there is no need to head down to Fenway Park or the Boston Garden. Nearly every neighborhood has a handful of excellent sports bars to check out. Here are some of my favorite places.

BackBay: Champions is located just outside of Copley Square in the Marriott Copley and it includes a 12′ x 24′ plasma screen that is pretty awesome. If you haven’t visited this place since their renovation – come back. It’s in a great location and affords great views from anywhere you sit as well as a huge bar. You can follow them on twitter at ChampionsBoston.

Fenway / Kenmore: Cask’n Flagon may be the most famous of all Boston’s sports bars. It’s location just outside Fenway Park is second to none and since its renovations a few years ago, it is far easier and more comfortable to watch a game. You can follow them on twitter at thecasknflagon.

North End / West End: The Fours is nestled between the North End and West End across from the Boston Garden. Despite having multiple locations outside the city, the best remains the original if only because its a stone throw from the Garden.

Seaport / Fort Point Channel: Jerry Remy’s at Liberty Wharf this place is relatively new and is already a favorite. Situated between the Fish Pier and Harbor Lights, this bar also sports an excellent view of Boston harbor. I far prefer this location to the original just outside Fenway Park. You can also follow them on Twitter here, JerryRemysGrill.

South End: Fritz is first and foremost a neighborhood bar that also happens to be a sports bar. With trophies showing their support for neighborhood sporting leagues and TVs everywhere you can always watch whatever game is of interest to you. Located in the South End, patrons are nearly all gay.

Southie: Stadium Sports Bar is just a few blocks from Andrew T stop along the Dorchester border. It has a second location down in Foxwoods which may be why many people think it sounds familiar. The Boston location has multiple oversized screens and plasma TVs everywhere you look. You can follow this location on twitter at StadiumSBoston.

Just in case someone thinks I forgot about Beacon Hill or Charlestown, I couldn’t think of a single place to watch a game. It has been awhile since I’ve spent much time there. Any suggestions?

What are some of your favorite places in Boston or where you live to watch games? Have any others to suggest or are you thinking, “Hey BosGuy… I never watch these games. I’m far more preoccupied with my drink order.

Red Bull Cliff Diving comes to Boston

Perhaps Red Bull really does give you wings…

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series came to Boston on Saturday, August 20th. The tour had made stops in Chile, Mexico, Greece, France and Italy before coming to Boston. The final stop on the Red Bull tour is in Yalta, Ukraine next month, but today Boston was all about diving.

One thing I absolutely love about Boston is that this town embraces sports of all kinds and this extreme sport which had some of the world’s best cliff divers jumping from over 90 feet (nearly 30 meters) attracted a HUGE crowd today in the Seaport District. To add to the drama, divers used the cantilever roof of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) building on Fan Pier.

Free stuff to do in Boston this Friday

Although I’m off to Gotham this weekend, that doesn’t mean I’m unaware of all the fun things happening in Boston. If you don’t have plans this Friday or if you are tired of doing the same thing, consider one of these options.

Shakespeare on the Common Once again this year, The Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. is providing free performances. This year they are performing All’s Well that Ends Well through August 14th down by the bandstand on the Boston Common. Invite that special someone to join you Friday evening under the stars and enjoy some great local theater.
ICA Boston Thanks to the Highland Street Foundation, this Friday (August 5th) Boston’s premiere contemporary art museum is free to the public as part of their FREE FUN FRIDAYS series. Be sure to check out their “The Record: Contemporary Art & Vinyl” exhibit. For a small cover charge after taking in the exhibit you can partake in their waterfont dance party “DJs on the harbor: Classic DJ Throwdown”.
Of course there are more options such as First Fridays Open Studios, Boston Guerilla Queer Bar which will be overtaking a straight bar in the theater district this month, or joining guys for a drink at Fritz Bar in the South End to watch the Red Sox kick off a hometown series against the Yankees.

Boston Bruins victory parade

Earlier this week the State House unfurled a large congratulations banner and since then, it seems like black-and-gold is everywhere you look. Today’s victory parade for the Bruins brought record crowds into the city to celebrate, and the beautiful weather only made the parade that much more enjoyable for everyone.

Attending the parade over near Copley Square, it was hard not to get caught up in the emotion of the day watching tens of thousands of people cheering on each player as they went by in the Duck Boat parade.

However, one of my favorite memories of the day may have been after the parade when the players were back at the Garden. A local TV channel filmed Patrice Bergeron walking home to the North End followed by about 100 fans cheering him the entire way. Patrice is one of several players who lives in the North End and their approachability / no airs personalities are so refreshing to see in professional athletes.

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins and their fans.

Decade of Dominance: Golden Age for Boston Sporting Teams

7 Championship Titles in 10 Years
I’m sure there are a lot of people who have strong opinions about Boston sports teams. I’ll be the first to admit that this town takes sports very seriously (probably too seriously at times). However, ignoring the drunks and annoying braggarts, there is a large contingency of fans (myself included) who follow and really love the local teams, cheering them on with bravado.

The Bruins win last night, means that each of the major Boston sports franchises has brought a championship title to Boston in the past decade. I’m not sure if there is another city that’s been so fortunate. A quick look on Wikipedia shows a pretty amazing streak for Boston sports teams.

2002 – New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
2004 – New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
Red Sox win World Series (Baseball) first time since 1918
2005 – New England Patriots win Superbowl (Football)
2007 – Red Sox win World Series (Baseball)
2008 – Celtics win 17th NBA Title (Basketball)
2011 – Bruins win Stanley Cup Trophy (Hockey) first time since 1972

This doesn’t even count appearances these teams made in post season play. Some years it seemed like Boston had multiple teams playing in the finals, which only has added to the near religious fever residents have for the local sporting teams.

Congratulations Boston Bruins

Tonight the Boston Bruins won game 7 on the road, beating the Vancouver Canucks. The series was well played by both teams and filled with plenty of drama. The last time the Boston Bruins won the National Hockey League Stanley Cup Championship was the 1971-1972 season. As you might imagine the city has erupted into spontaneous celebration. Congratulations Boston.

The homepage of Boston.com has a tribute to the Bruins, this is my favorite picture. Tim Thomas the goalie skating with the Stanley Cup overhead.

Go Bruins

Bostonians have been holding our breathe watching the Bruins progress in post season play this spring. They’ve played remarkably well throughout and came out with their most aggressive play to date in game six, scoring four goals within minutes of the first period, sending the fans in the Boston Garden into an absolute frenzy.

The series is tied up once again and our guys need to pack up for one more trip out west to play the final game of the championship series back in Vancouver.

Breaking out the brooms

The Red Sox came back in dramatic fashion last night to beat the NY Yankees and sweep them. What a sweet start to their road trip.

Red Sox message to GLBT youth: It Gets Better

Last month I wrote about Sam Maden a 12 year old who created an online petition to ask the Boston Red Sox to make an It Gets Better video in support of bullied LGBT youth. You can read the post here.

After more than 9,000 fans signed the online petition Susan Goodenow, SVP of Public Affairs and Marketing for the Red Sox announced today that my home team will become the 3rd major league baseball team following the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs to make an It Gets Better video.

To celebrate, I’ve added this piece of baseball eye candy I swiped from the David Dust blog.

Sam Maden – A GLBT ally who won’t be ignored

With summer so close, bullying in schools may not seem as pressing, but that’s not how Sam Maden, a 12 year old from Nashua, NH sees it. This young man has started a petition asking the Boston Red Sox to make an “It Gets Better” video. Apparently the idea came after his 43 year old uncle Chris died unexpectedly. Chris had given Sam a necklace from the Trevor Project, and according to Sam’s mother, Sam wears it every day in memory of his uncle.

Looking to local sports heroes to speak up for LGBT youth and to end bullying seems like a brilliant idea considering the lingering reputation of homophobia linked to many sports organizations. I don’t know about you but I take great heart that such a young man can be so passionate about such a worthwhile cause. Who knows if the Red Sox will heed Sam’s petition but I would certainly appreciate it if you would help spread the word and help Sam’s wish come true.
How can you help? Sign his petition here (it only takes a minute) and spread the word.

Benny Feilhaber Brazilian soccer player & lip sync ingenue

Benny Feilhaber is a 26 year old soccer player for the New England Revolution. He was born in Brazil and raised mostly in the US and is currently on the cover of the Improper Bostonian. However, if you’re not particularly interested in reading the Soroff interview, you can check out this funny music video he created of the Chris Brown / Jordin Sparks song No Air.

Apparently he created the video for a friend as a joke, but it went viral so after initially being embarrassed about the incident (at least according to the interview) he’s come to laugh it off and embrace it. Either way it certainly “ups” his cute factor and makes me like this very handsome midfielder even more. I especially like the goofy faces he makes at the start of the video. Watch the video and let me know if you agree.

French Open

The French Open (one of the four tennis majors) started earlier this week. This year’s tournament has proven to have its share of drama and upsets in the first week; notably the Women’s number 1 being knocked out in the third round by the number 28 seed.

Even if the sport of tennis alludes you, the producers of The French Open have done a superb job of showing off how beautiful the city of Paris is with stunning video of the city. And many in the men’s draw can only be described as distractingly handsome. Here are a few who you may not be familiar with but are both talented tennis players in this year’s French Open and êtes beau (as the French would say).

Verdasco (Spain)

Rick Welts – Phoenix Suns President says "I’m Gay"

In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, Rick Welts – Phoenix Suns President – explained why he chose such a public forum to announce his sexual orientation. In the interview he addresses what it was like working in the NBA while losing his life-partner to AIDS in the 80s and why he chose to come out ahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gift this point. You can read the full interview here.

“The other was if there was a chance to do some good for people, young people, who are struggling with their own issues and wondering whether or not they could pursue their passions and have a chance to have a successful career, whether that was team sports or something else.”
– Suns president Rick Welts on reason for publicly revealing he is gay

(Thanks lil’ brother for reminding me about this story.)

Celebrating with family and friends

Today is my birthday… not a milestone like last year but still a fun day is planned with family and friends.

My brother’s birthday is next week so we’ve combined our celebrations and will be heading to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox game this afternoon joined by about 30 others. The day has started sunny but brisk (in the low 50s BRRRR). Hopefully the sun will remain and the mercury will start to rise before game time in a few hours.

My birthday wish this year would be that you have a wonderful day. Let’s spread some good karma around.

Red Sox come home

Although the Red Sox 0-5 start to the season is extremely disappointing, all can be forgiven if they sweep the NYY who come into town tomorrow (Friday) for a 3-game series at Fenway. So break out your rosary beads, start your chanting, do what ever you do, because the Red Sox are coming home starting Friday – and I can hardly wait.
