Restaurant review: 28 Degrees

bosguySo named because it is the ideal temperature to serve a martini, this restaurant has a sophisticated vibe that is immediately apparent upon entering.  This restaurant which has had more than its share of rumors of pending sales and closings has been popular since it first opened in 2006.

Relaxing music with images of waves crashing and subdued lighting give way to very comfortable booths, a large bar and additional seating nooks that make you want to order a bottle of champagne tray of  oysters.  At least that is what I always have the urge to do.

On this visit for dinner, I opted for something more substantial.  The dinner menu is divided into raw bar, pizzas, small plates, and large plates (of which there are only four).  The good news is that the “small plates” are not all that small.  Depicted below is the Burrata with arugula, mushrooms, truffle oil and toasts ($12) as well as the Crispy Calamari which also include pickled cherry peppers, arugula and lemon aoli on the side ($15).

It is hard to say which I enjoyed more since they could not have been more different.  The burrata was cool and creamy.  Conversely, the calamari was crispy and the pickled cherry peppers added a bit of heat. Ordering these starters was the dining equivalent of Yin and Yang… complete opposites but very satisfying because of their contrasts.BosGuy

For dinner Sergio ordered the seared strip steak which came with potato, asparagus and roasted red radishes ($29).  The meat was perfectly cooked and nicely presented. I’m not a huge fan of red meat, but I thought the dinner was as appealing to the eye as it was to the palate.  28 Degrees also has five different pizzas. I opted for the wild mushroom pizza with manchego, herb ricotta and arugula ($15). I love the combination of the sharp and creamy Spanish and Italian cheeses, which smother the liberal sampling of mushrooms.BosGuy

28 Degrees is at 1 Appleton Street in Boston’s South End

Reservations for dinner are strongly recommended

Boston BalletJamesBruceWhite – A.K.A. James Whiteside, is a native of Connecticut but lucky for us here, he’s been dancing in Boston since 2002.  He became a Principal Dancer with the Boston Ballet back in 2009 and happens to live in Boston’s South End (my hood).  I’ve never seen James in person but its not for lack of looking around.  Who knows perhaps our paths will cross, but til then one can still watch James perform and of course, follow him on Twitter.

RichardDustin – Dustin is the communications guru at a non-profit I once upon a time worked at, The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.  Dustin is a Georgia native who found his way up here to Boston and is now fully focused on Tweeting about the upcoming AIDS Walk Boston.  Have questions about how you can get involved or participate in this year’s AIDS walk? Follow this personable and handsome 20-something.

Happy Mother’s Day

MomMom – Happy Mother’s Day. Love you more than I can express.

Also, Happy Mother’s Day to my sister, Elizabeth; Happy Mother’s Day to Terezinha (Sergio’s mother and a wonderful woman); as well as to all my lovely aunts, cousins and friends who constantly sacrifice and fret over being the best parent they know how.

Republicans vote to restrict rights of gay servicemen and women

BosGuyWhile it seems the Democratic Party’s leadership is doing its best to try and treat everyone equally under the law, some Republicans in the House Armed Services Committee in the US House of Representatives are intent on doing there utmost to legalize discrimination and to marginalize the LGBT servicemen and women.

The Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would ban military bases from hosting marriages or “marriage-like ceremonies” between same-sex couples.  The Republican panel members also approved language to protect military personnel from reprisals for expressing “their moral principles and religious beliefs… concerning the appropriate and inappropriate expression of human sexuality.”  You can read the full story as reported on the blog, TheHill.com.

Suddenly it makes sense

BosGuyI never felt the urge to train for a triathlon, but suddenly I’m starting to get a better appreciation for the sport.  Perhaps I should volunteer at the next triathlon here in Boston and offer to towel guys off or provide a nice back rub. What can I say? I’m a giver — err — I mean “givah“.

Cupcake the new musical opens tonight

Club CafeA new show called Cupcake opens this week at Club Cafe. This is an original musical developed and produced locally.

Cupcake takes place in Summertown (Hmm… can you say Provincetown?) in a free-spirited seaside resort where every mouth waters for Tom’s irresistible cupcakes.  Unfortunately, rookie Officer Stone is on the prowl and the law clearly states that street sales of food are taboo. The locals, especially the hunky Lifeguard and the sexy-nerdy Librarian relish Tom’s contraband cupcakes and help their adored baker boy avoid arrest.

Boston

May 10 – June 24 at Club Cafe

Shows are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm as well as Sunday brunch/matinee shows (June10, 17, and 24 at 2pm). Ticket are $25 -$35 and can be purchased online here.

Obama’s support for same sex marriage is a game changer

Obama Marriage EqualityPresident Obama “came out” in support of same sex marriage yesterday.  Why he chose now and how he got to this point is irrelevant to me. What does matter is a sitting President is on record supporting marriage equality, and that is a game changer for three crucial reasons.

First, although his support does not change Federal Law, having the public support of the highest elected official in the country matters (and it matters a lot).  When Massachusetts legalized Same Sex Marriage on May 17, 2004 it was only because incremental changes  and advancements which had started years before came to fruition.  Obama’s support is more than an incremental advancement.

Obama’s standing within the African American, Black and Arabic communities here and abroad is without equal.  These communities have long been some of the most vocal opposing same sex marriage. Obama’s endorsement and framing the issue as one of equality and fairness will have significant impact on these communities. No doubt there will be some heated sermons in traditionally black churches this Sunday through out the United States.

Lastly, Obama has set a standard which all future Presidential nominees will now be found wanting if they don’t support marriage equality. While this will fire up those opposed to same sex marriage; I believe this is still a gain for the President and for states currently debating legalizing same sex marriage.  Americans love to support winners and the prejudicial arguments to oppose same sex marriage is sounding more and more like a losing argument.  Obama’s support is a game changer.

And just like that, I’m psyched for the 2012 Presidential election.
