Tonight: Free fireworks over Boston Harbor

The city of Boston would like to celebrate the end of summer with a harbor fireworks show by Boston Harbor Now; suggested public viewing locations include the Christopher Columbus Park in the North End, Piers Park in East Boston and Fan Pier in the Seaport.

This is the fifth year fireworks over Boston Harbor will take place this evening at sunset. For more details visit 5th Annual Illuminate the Harbor Boston Harbor Fireworks.

1st National March for LGBT rights in DC 1979 Source Mark Reinstein Getty Images

The current political climate has become increasingly poisonous and I wanted to share an inspiring photograph from the 1st National March for LGBT rights that took place in 1979. The LGBT community was organizing and building a voice that would help it flex its political muscle. Something that would be desperately needed in just a few years when the AIDS epidemic blew up. Ronald Reagan and all of the US Congress (Democrats and Republicans alike) would turn their backs on our community while tens of thousands of young men succumbed to the “Gay Cancer” as it was called.

The Orinthologist is at The Brattle this weekend

independent film, lgbtq film, gay film

This past Spring Boston’s LGBTQ Film Festival a.k.a. Wicked Queer, showcased the Portuguese film, The Ornithologist. The film returns to the Boston area and will play at The Brattle Theatre starting Friday, Sept. 1st.

You can purchase your tickets from the Brattle online, here.

ABOUT THE ORNITHOLOGIST: Director João Pedro Rodrigues reimagines the myth of Saint Anthony of Padua as a modern-day parable of sexual and spiritual transcendence. On a bird-watching expedition in the remote wilderness, Fernando (Paul Hamy) capsizes and loses his bearings. His ensuing odyssey, both intensely physical and wildly metaphysical, involves sadistic Chinese pilgrims, a deaf-mute shepherd named Jesus, pagan tribes, Amazons on horseback, and a glorious variety of feathered friends.

This week on Instagram: place.st.russell

Stephen St. Russell, David St. Russell, Stephen and David St. RussellGuys who live in Boston will likely know or recognize Stephen and David St. Russell. They are an outgoing and friendly couple who bought a fixer-upper in Dorchester earlier this year.

Stephen and David are in the midst of turning a 19th century Victorian house that was in some serious need of TLC into their dream home. Like all good Millennials they have set up a website to share their story, which you can see here, and are using Instagram to document the house’s transformation.

It is far more fun following these two on Instagram than any faux-reality show I’ve seen on HGTV.

Follow these two on Instagram here, instagram.com/place.st.russell.

Allston Christmas (a.k.a. move in day in Boston)

September 1Within the next 24-48 hours not a single Uhaul van or truck will be available in metro Boston as the city braces for an event locals refer to as “Allston Christmas”.

Because most city apartment leases start September 1st, the streets become chalk full of double-parked cars, vans and trucks starting August 31st as tenants start the arduous task of moving from one apartment to the next. The result of having literally tens of thousands of people all moving on the same day is that the city sidewalks become littered with unwanted items. This ‘littering’ of every piece of furniture and furnishing imaginable is what is referred to as an Allston Christmas. Although this city-wide move impacts  nearly all of Boston’s neighbohoods, nowhere is the experience more intense than Allston, although many neighborhoods will likely experience their own form of an Allston Xmas.

In case you think I’m making this up, Urban Dictionary added this term in 2008 here and one only needs to type in the phrase in Google and select images to see what the streets of Boston will look like starting August 31st.

Restaurant review: Cafe Heaven (Provincetown)

Provincetown, Ptown

Painting of Cafe Heaven by Paul Schulenburg

Restaurants come and go but Cafe Heaven, conveniently situated on Commercial Street in Provincetown is a favorite that has stood the test of time. However, after one of the owners tragically died this spring I didn’t know quite what to expect when we visited. I’ll admit I was sad to walk in and not be immediately greeted by Alan, but the restaurant in every other way is as good as ever thanks to Patrick who runs the kitchen and the dedicated staff.

Cafe Heaven is probably best known for their breakfast, which is consistently excellent. The menu includes eggs benedict, omelettes, granola, yogurt etc. along with a few French Toast and pancake options always served fresh maple syrup.

Raspberry Pecan Pancake stack $13

On this visit two specials caught our eyes, the first was a  stack of raspberry and pecan pancakes and the “scramble special” which changes regularly but on this day consisted of tomato and bacon, served with breakfast potatoes and toast.

The stack of pancakes were served warm and the maple syrup was soaked up by the large, fruit and nut filled pancake. By contrast, the scramble special of the day was much more savory. Both were excellent and I would most definitely recommend should you see them on the menu when you visit. However, over the years I’ve learned that everything on their breakfast menu is delicious and worth the calories so check out Cafe Heaven on your next visit to Provincetown.

Scramble of the Day: Tomatoes and Bacon $14.95

Cafe Heaven is open daily (in season) from 8AM – 2PM for breakfast and lunch and from 6PM-10PM for dinner.

BosGuy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, Wicked Awesome.
