BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, rodin, riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: He who dances all night long and eats all it can see. He eats until he dies, but never is he thirsty. Always must he be trapped between the stones, for in the forest he would run free. I can offer him a drink but he can’t be close to me.

Restaurant review: Bistro du Midi

This was my first visit to the two-story French restaurant overlooking the Boston Public Garden. Truthfully, I prefer the decor of its predecessor, Excelsior, but the food and service here could not be faulted.  Bistro du Midi restaurantZagat describes Bistro du Midi as serving “classic” Provençal cuisine enlivened with “modern presentation”.  I’m not exactly sure what that means but the food certainly was beautifully presented as you can see from the first courses served: Deconstructed Soft Shell Crab – $17; Tuna Tartare – $16; Beef Tartare $15; and Grilled Octopus $18, which I devoured.

Bistro du Midi AppetizersGrilled Octopus

I really enjoyed the sea bass filet ($32) shown below, which happened to be one of the special dinners prepared by the kitchen that night. The fish was beautifully presented with half the plate pristine and the other dusted with herbs and spices over a filet that was cooked perfectly and very flavorful.Sea BassAlthough I rarely get dessert, Bistro du Midi is known for their souffle, which takes 25 minutes to prepare so is encouraged to be ordered ahead of time.  The four of us ended up ordering two different souffles ($12 each) as well as their chocolate beignet, lavender crème for $9.  The souffle’s were consumed so quickly you may not have realized they were even served but for the evidence of the empty ramekins.  The beignets were sufficiently decadent but it was the aromatic and flavorful lavender crème that I enjoyed the most about the dessert.

Bistro du Midi dessertDinner which included an appetizer, dinner and dessert along with a glass of wine worked out to approximately $75 / person with tip.  This isn’t the sort of place that I can go to regularly, but if you enjoy French cuisine and are looking for an option in the Back Bay to splurge, I’d suggest it for your consideration.

Bistro du Midi is in the Heritage on the Green Building at 272 Boylston Street.

Denim dreams

handsome, hunk, shirtless, musclesI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, not just anyone can pull off the no shirt and jeans look, but if you have the body for it – lean and toned – I say go for it.

The Country Club by Mojitos

The Country Club by MojitosIn May I wrote a post called Randolph Country Club becomes the Country Club by Mojitos.  After several attempts to connect with owners to find out what was going on, I gave up but based on the way they promoted their club, I assumed that it was no longer marketing itself as a gay establishment.

The Country Club by MojitosHowever, over the summer I’ve heard from different people that they have enjoyed visiting the newly rebranded club and some improvements have been made to make a visit more comfortable; notably they have invested in what appear to be comfortable (and clean) chairs.

I hope the owners continue to invest in the space by adding landscaping and updating the inside.  I’d also be curious if anyone has been to The Country Club by Mojitos on a weekend to let me know if the gay clientele is still visiting or if it more closely resembles the promo shots they have on their FB Page.

Deadspin article: Athletes you should bone instead of Cristiano Ronaldo

soccer, football, sports, athleteEarlier this month Deadspin posted this article, Athletes you should bone instead of Cristiano Ronaldo, and my brother emailed it to me saying it seemed more appropriate for my blog than Deadspin; I’m inclined to agree so I thought I’d give it the attention it deserves.

It seems like everyone who left a comment (worth perusing by the way) had an opinion or two to share about overlooked athletes so I’d suggest a few as well.  Let me know who you’d add to this list of athletes.

Jim Garoppolo is so handsome I might actually watch a Patriots game if Brady’s suspension isn’t overturned and he starts for New England.football, NFL, jock, hunk, handsome

How could a gay blog overlook Ben Cohen?  I’m deeply suspicious that the Deadspin author has no idea what he’s talking about since he overlooked Ben.Ben Cohen

I also have a bit of a crush on an Olympic athlete. The 27 year old Aussie bobsledder, Simon Dunn, currently lives and trains in Calgary, Canada.bobsledder, olympian, Australian

So who else would you add to this list?

Boy Scouts are poised to end gay ban

Boy ScoutsLast week the executive committee of the Boy Scouts of America unanimously approved a resolution that would end the organization’s blanket ban on gay adult leaders and let individual Scout units set their own policy. However, units sponsored by churches opposed to the change could maintain the ban if they choose. The policy change will become official policy immediately if ratified by the organization’s 80-member National Executive Board at a meeting on July 27.

La fête du 14-juillet

French Flag, Bastille DayThere is a surprising lack of handsome men with French flags on the Internet so I opted for this image of American born model, Alexander Masson on Bastille Day. I believe the appropriate thing to say on this occasion is, La fête du 14-juillet!

Siena at the Ink Block

Siena Ink Block South End Boston

Rendering of “Siena” loft residences at the Ink Block

National Development shared this image for Siena, a new 79-unit condominium building on the corner of Albany Street that will begin construction in 2016 and open in early 2017.  The building is the sixth in the complex better known as the Ink Block; where the Boston Herald building previously stood.

National Development pointed the interest in their other condominium building, Sepia, at the Ink Block which opens in November of 2105, when they introduced Siena. According to the release, the building will include studios, one, two, and three bedrooms, as well as the maisonettes, which they describe as a new concept to Boston living – loft-style units with ground floor terraces.

The building will also have something called their rooftop “Sky Lounge“, although I’m really not sure what that is. It sounds like a bar but if it is only open to residents then it may just be a fancy name for a roof deck, which considering its location could probably provide you with the best traffic updates for the Southeast Expressway and the Mass Pike in the city.

What it took to create the world’s first gay art museum

LGBT art

Robert Mapplethorpe Untitled (Dominick and Elliot)1979 B&W photographic print

Smithsonian Magazine has an interesting article, “What it Took to Create the World’s First Gay Art Museum” that I would encourage anyone who finds this sort of thing interesting to read.  For the rest of you, take note of this museum when you next visit NYC if you’ve never been before.

Nestled in SoHo is the world’s first gay art museum, The Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art.  In the past I’ve written about their exhibits, but this time I’m writing about news that the museum will soon double in size. The expansion of more than 3,000 square feet will allow the museum to host multiple exhibits at the same time.

Be proud of the contributions made by the LGBT community and in particular of their art which pushes the boundaries of sexuality.  You can visit The Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in SoHo at 26 Wooster Street, NYC.
