Free outdoor summer movies in Boston

Rob Reiner, River and a Movie, EF EducationWhat does Back to the Future, The Princess Bride and Batman have in common? They are all movies that you can watch outdoors for free in Boston this month.

Thrillist Boston has published their list of free outdoor movies in Boston and will continue to add to this list as new listings and shows are announced. Currently the month of July has 30 free movies published (and more will likely be added). So if you love being outside and enjoy movies this might be a great date night or fun night out with friends.  Note that the showings take place in a variety of spaces so double check the location and timing for each movie.

Hourly wage required to afford a 2BR rental in each state

cost of living by stateClick on the image above to enlarge image

The National Low Income Housing Coalition has calculated the hourly wage a resident would need to earn to afford a moderate, two-bedroom apartment in each state. They found that the average hourly wage needed to rent a $1,006 two-bedroom unit in the United States is $19.35 ($40,240 per year); it is $24.64 (51,250 per year) in Massachusetts.

Unsurprisingly, Massachusetts (along with pretty much the entire Northeast and Mid Atlantic states) is listed as one of the most expensive places to live. Massachusetts can do better and news earlier this year that Boston is building more affordable homes / apartments is good but we have to do better.

Gay for Good Boston volunteers at Franklin Park Zoo

Franklin Park Zoo Gay for Good BostonGAY FOR GOOD is a volunteer organization that operates in Boston and ten other cities around the US.  The group aims to energize and mobilize the LGBT community to interact with the greater community by volunteering their time to various social welfare and environmental service projects.

Each month, Gay For Good Boston selects a different non-profit to donate our time for a community service project.  Next month on Saturday, July 11th GAY FOR GOOD Boston will help the Franklin Park Zoo with their park beautification for the peak of summer tourist season. There is plenty of parking, and this project is accessible by MBTA bus routes #16 or #45.  Following the volunteer work everyone is welcome to join at Doyle’s Cafe, 3484 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain for lunch.  RSVP before this program fills to capacity.

Holy Trinity Church in the South End to be turned into luxury condos

South EndLast June the Archdiocese of Boston put the Holy Trinity Church up for sale. The ne0-gothic church and rectory first opened in 1877 but has been vacant since it closed in 2011.  Last week the Boston Redevelopment Authority approved plans to transform the church and rectory into 33 new housing units.  The $47 million project will involve demolition of the existing interior space to accommodate a new 8-story building that will also include 28 basement parking spots.

The new design attempts to marry modern steel and glass elements while preserving the historic character of the existing structure and exterior masonry. Lighting features will enhance the church’s spire and highlight the classic architecture of the building.
