The Wilson / Cortor exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston opens today. The exhibit celebrates the legacies of two contemporary American artists—John Wilson (a Roxbury, MA native) and Eldzier Cortor—each dedicated to an exploration of the African American experience. The exhibit includes approximately 50 works, many shown for the first time. The exhibition highlights the MFA’s significant holdings of prints and drawings by each artist.

Tis the season to watch scary films and keeping with that tradition The Coolidge Theatre is hosting their 16th annual Halloween Horror Marathon this weekend.
The twelve hours of murder, mayhem, and masks on 35mm film starts at the witching hour on Saturday, October 29th with a double feature of the late Wes Craven’s meta-slashers Scream and Scream 2!

Last week it was announced that Iranian artist, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, who has made a name for himself by painting large trompe-l’oeils in Tehran, will bring a brand-new, mind-bending mural to Boston’s Dewey Square on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
The 76′ x 70′ surface will be the fifth public art installation in Dewey Square and will be both a new piece and his first in the U.S. Called, Spaces of Hope, it is sure to be inspired by Surrealism which characterizes his work to date. It is expected to take him through the middle of October to complete the large mural which you can see being painted currently. This is a welcome change to the most recent installation in Dewey Square which I found cold and uninspiring.

The Fall River Axe Murders at the BCA Black Box Theater Oct 1-22 Just in time for Halloween, Angela Carter uses an inventive blend of storytelling, movement and puppetry arts, The Fall River Axe Murders. We all know what Lizzie Borden did on that sweltering August day in 1892, but what if there were more to the story? Angela Carter’s strange and Gothic play takes a much closer look at Lizzie Borden and the gruesome murders.
We’re Gonna Die from Company One at Club Oberon Oct. 4-8 After a sold-out run in April 2016, We’re Gonna Die returns to Club Oberon for five shows. Boldly exploring the less awesome moments of life through song, storytelling and stand-up, this OBIE-Award-winning cabaret event is the smartest and most life-affirming way to contemplate the inevitable!
Tiger Style! from The Huntington Theatre at the Calderwood Pavilion Oct 14 – Nov 13 This smart urban comedy is abou two squabbling siblings Albert and Jennifer Chen who reached the pinnacle of academic achievement. But as adults, have become epic failures: he’s just been passed up for promotion and she’s been dumped by her loser boyfriend. So, naturally, they confront their parents and launch an Asian Freedom Tour! From California to China, this hilarious new comedy examines race, parenting, and success.
Warrior Class from the Lyric Stage Co. Oct 21 – Nov 13 Just in time for the climax of this year’s Presidential election season is The Lyric Stage Co. productionof Warrior Class which centers on an up and coming New York assemblyman who’s been dubbed “The Republican Obama.” The son of Chinese immigrants and a decorated war veteran, he looks forward to a seemingly limitless political career until someone from his past threatens to reveal a college transgression. How far will he go to keep the incident out of the public eye?
The Scottsboro Boys from the SpeakEasy Stage Oct 21 – Nov 19 This Boston premiere brings to light one of the most infamous events in American history: the shocking true story of nine African American boys jailed in Alabama in 1931 for a crime they did not commit. Featuring a mix of gospel, jazz, and vaudeville, this audacious musical uses the construct of a minstrel show to tell the harrowing true story that provoked a national outrage and helped launch the American civil rights movement.
Le Corsaire from Boston Ballet at the Opera House Oct 27 – Nov 16 The Boston Ballet opens their 2016/2017 season with Le Corsaire, a classical ballet steeped in swashbuckling adventure and passionate romance. A dashing pirate battles to rescue his beloved from Pasha’s harem with danger looming at every turn – in opulent places, secret caves and on the turbulent sea.
King Cobra which comes out next month is based on the early rise of gay porn headliner Sean Paul Lockhart a.k.a. Brent Corrigan. The movie trailer has just become available so I’ve posted it below to share.
According to its IMDB page the movie is about “Sean Paul Lockhart a.k.a. Brent Corrigan before his falling out with the producer, Stephen, played by Christian Slater who made him famous. When Sean decides he’d be better off a free agent, a cash-strapped pair of rival producers aim to cash in by any means possible.”
King Cobra has an impressive cast including James Franco, Christian Slater, Molly Ringwald, Alicia Silverstone Garrett Clayton and Keegan Allen. Look for King Cobra in theaters starting Friday, October 21st.
In 1986 a group of artists at the Boston Center for the Arts invited friends and neighbors into their studios to view their art. As more artists became interested in the event, the United South End Artists was formed, and the South End Open Studios weekend came into being.
Today the South End Open Studios includes a dozen studio buildings and more than 250 artists, encompassing all of Boston’s South End neighborhood. This year will mark their 30th anniversary so come over to the South End.
