So many things to do in Boston this weekend

Boston Freedom RallyThere is so much happening in Boston this weekend, I hope that if you live in the area you will come out to participate in one of the many festivals taking place. Here are some of the largest celebrations happening this weekend.

Art Week Boston starts this weekend and runs through early October. The week includes 100+ programs around the city (many of which are free).

Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival Takes place Saturday, Sept. 26 from 12:00 – 6:00 PM on Columbus Ave between Mass Ave and Burke Street. This fantastic jazz festival is FREE and expected to draw 80,000+ people.

Boston Calling is a large music festival that will draw equally large crowds who will come to see more than 20 bands perform on state in Gov’t Center. Unlike the other festivals this is not free so be prepared to pay top dollar to scalpers.

Boston Freedom Rally is one of the largest marijuana legalization rallies in the country and it is held on Boston Common this weekend Saturday and Sunday, starting at 12PM. The event is FREE and includes a large music festival as well as food and hemp vendors all promoting the virtues of marijuana.

Chinatown Lantern Festival is FREE and takes place Saturday, September 26 from 12-8 PM by the Rose Kennedy Greenway at the Chinatown Gate on Beach Street and Surface Road.

Fluff Festival What the Fluff? This is the most delicious festival you will attend this weekend (and it is FREE to boot). All the fun takes place Saturday and Sunday from 3pm – 7pm in Union Square, Somerville.

Museum Day Saturday (Today!), September 26th is Museum Day. More than 20 museums in the area are open and free to visit today. Click on the link for more details about which museums are free today.

Boston Freedom Rally is Sept 26-27

Hempfest Boston

2012 Freedom Rally to legalize marijuana at Boston Common

$125 Million: Colorado marijuana tax revenue is on pace to double bringing in an expected $125 million dollars to the state.

Did you know that Boston hosts one of the largest rallies in the US to educate people on the benefits of marijuana and celebrate its many uses every September? This year marks the 26th anniversary of The Boston Freedom Rally. Come to the Boston Common to check out the two day celebration. The rally will be used to also collect signatures for Bay State Repeal initiative to legalize cannabis; they are hoping to collect more than 65,000 signatures this weekend.

Both the sitting Governor of MA and Mayor of Boston have done everything they can to thwart medical marijuana dispensaries from opening, despite overwhelming support in the polls back in 2012 when it was passed. If you are in favor of the legalization of marijuana come to show your support.  Aside from money, nothing gets a politician’s attention like large rallies.

Did you know? ~750,000 people were arrested for marijuana violations in 2012; what an unnecessary burden on law enforcement and our judicial system.

12,000+ millionaires call Boston home

LGBT Boston, gay life bostonAccording to a recent article in The Boston Courant, more than 12,000 millionaires call Boston home.  The Back Bay and South End seem to be the preferred neighborhoods for these wealthy residents, accounting for more than half of all the city’s millionaires. These two neighborhoods also saw the fastest growth in numbers of new millionaire residents. With luxury developments springing up through out Boston this number is expected to grow.  Just consider the impact of two developments like the Millennium Tower and new Four Seasons Hotel & Residences, which will add 600+ more million dollar properties in the next 12-18 months.

Luxe app brings valet parking on demand to Boston

valet app for parkingOne of the biggest gripes people have about driving in Boston has to do with parking.  The San Francisco start-up, Luxe, which rolled into Boston this spring has come up with an ingenious solution.

Luxe is a phone app that sounds incredibly simple to operate.  You open the app when you are nearing your destination and a Luxe agent will arrive to take your car away for however long you want.  When you want to leave, press the app again and wait for the valet to return your car.

Luxe Boston Valet App for your phone

Luxe is now available in more than a half dozen cities through out the U.S. including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle on the West Coast, Austin and Chicago in the Midwest and Boston, NYC and Philadelphia on the East Coast.

Let me know if you’ve used this app here in Boston or elsewhere and share your thoughts. I’m more than a little curious to hear your thoughts.

Allston Christmas, September 1st

Over the years locals have come to refer to September 1 as “Allston Christmas”; sarcastically referring to all the discarded junk renters leave curbside.

I have heard estimates that 80% of all apartments in Boston have a September 1 – August 31 lease; driven by the nearly 250,000 students who return to Boston each year.  Neighborhoods like Allston-Brighton have a large number of rentals and are impacted disproportionately – hence the term Allston Christmas.

Boston: 5th worst rush hour gridlock in nation

2015 urban mobility scorecardAccording to the 2015 Urban Mobility Scorecard, travel delays due to traffic congestion caused drivers to waste more than 3 billion gallons of fuel, costing on average, $960 per commuter.  I was surprised to see DC leapfrog Los Angeles to claim the dubious honor of worst commute in America. According to the rankings, Boston commuters lose 64 hours each year; 5th worst traffic in the US.

Who has the worst gridlock? Below are the 10 worst average annual traffic delays per commuter in hours for urban areas with at least 3 million people.

Washington, DC – 82 hours
Los Angeles -80 hours
San Francisco – 78 hours
New York City – 74 hours
Boston – 64 hours
Seattle – 63 hours
Chicago – 61 hours
Houston – 61 hours
Dallas – Fort Worth – 53 hours
Atlanta – 52 hours
Detroit – 52 hours
Miami – 52 hours

I’m so happy to miss out on this headache. I’ve not driven to work since 1999 and if I can help it I’ll never go back to commuting by car ever again. How do  you get to work? Do you drive to work each day?
