Donna Summer Roller Disco is Friday, June 19

Boston, Together Boston, Donna Summer Roller DiscoTomorrow, Friday – June 19th, marks the return of Boston’s second annual Donna Summer outdoor Roller Disco at City Hall Plaza.

Friday, June 19th Boston to host Donna Summer Roller Disco

Similar to last year when more than 4,000 people came down to Government Center, the event will be free and open to the public, with skates for rent, food on hand and of course some excellent music courtesy of DJ Kon.  But beware that last year the lines to get roller skates wrapped around the entire Plaza so bring roller blades if you have them or plan to arrive early. Check out these photos from last summer’s Memorial Roller Disco to Boston native, Donna Summer. #HotStuffBosGuy, Boston Guy

Donna Summer Roller Disco in Gov’t Center Friday, June 19th

Boston, Together Boston, Donna Summer Roller DiscoI first wrote about this back in April, but I wanted to remind everyone that later this week the city of Boston in conjunction with Together Boston will host their second annual Donna Summer Roller Disco in Government Center on Friday, June 19th.  Last years party was a blast but the lines to get onto the rink were crazy long so this is one party where it pays to be early otherwise you may end up spending most of your time in line.

Date:  Friday, June 19th
Time: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Where:  Boston City Hall / Gov’t Center

Boston Pride June 5-14, 2015

Boston Pride 2015Boston’s 45th Pride celebration closes tonight Sunday, June 14th and while I attended fewer events this year than in the past, reports indicate most events were well attended. Once again the surprise highlight of the week was the 2nd Annual Heels for Hope party on June 10th at Cathedral Station raising money for BAGLY.

Warm weather and plenty of sunshine helped bring a larger than expected crowd into Boston on Saturday to watch the parade and parties around the city. Thank you to everyone who shared photographs and were nice enough to pose.

Boston metro ranked as most creative economy in US

boston-skyline.jpgWhile our city’s weather may not be the best, a new study ranks Boston as the most “creative economy” in the country, but what does that mean exactly?  This study suggests that a relatively narrow group of metros have emerged as leaders in America’s creative economy and are positioned to grow and prosper more than other metropolitan areas.Arizona State University researchers Shade Shutters, Rachata Muneepeerakul, and Jose LoboThe study was conducted by researchers at Arizona State University and took a detailed look at the growth and development of what they refer to as the “creative economy” between 2005 and 2013 (before and after the Great Recession). In the study, “creative occupations” were defined as those spanning science and technology; arts, culture, entertainment, and media; and business and management. Researchers mapped the interplay between creative occupations and other parts of the economy, isolating and examining the role that these creative industries played in the productivity and affluence of all 360-plus U.S. metros.

For more information about the study, its findings and conclusions read The Atlantic’s article, One Reason It’s So Hard To Be A ‘Creative Superstar City’

Godfrey Hotel Boston to open in DTX this fall

Godfrey Hotel BostonThe Godfrey Hotel is set to open in Boston later this fall after a $23 million renovation of the dilapidated Blake and adjoining Amory Building (built in 1904 / 1908 respectively).  The new hotel at 505 Washington Street is sandwiched between the up and coming DTX neighborhood and the lively Theater District. The building’s ground floor will be home to a George Howell Coffee shop and the adjacent six-story Amory building will house a restaurant that is yet to be named.

Gay travelers will be happy to know that the hotel is steps from theaters, restaurants, and parks.  It is also a quick ride to the the BHC high speed Provincetown fast ferry and close to several gay / gay friendly bars.

The “lifestyle” hotel will be Boston’s newest independent property and will feature 242 guest rooms.  As the fall approaches look for more information about this new hotel property.  You can also visit their website at godfreyhotelboston.com.

Below are some photos of what the rooms will look like.

Abandoned Steinert Theater may be renovated

steinert theaterLast June I wrote the post Wicked Cool: Boston’s very own phantom opera houseThe post was about a 650 person theater called Steinert Theater, which first opened in 1896 and was famous for its impeccable acoustics, but was forced to close after Boston’s tragic Coconut Grove fire in 1942.

Last week Boston Globe writer Steve Annear wrote an article indicating that the new owners of the building that houses Steinert Hall is contemplating renovating this theater which sits 35 feet below ground at 162 Boylston Street.

Developers say the project is complicated and could take 2-3 years to renovate. Long time Boston residents will remember the same rumblings back when the Boston Opera House and Modern Theatre – both on Washington Street – were first rumored to be renovated and reopened to the public. Let’s cross our fingers and hope this can happen.  If Steinert Theatre returns to its former glory it would join 9 other Theater houses in Boston’s Theater District including:

Boston Opera House
Colonial Theater
Charles Playhouse
Cutler Majestic Theatre
Modern Theatre at Suffolk
Paramount Theater
Shubert Theatre
Wang Center of Performing Arts
Wilbur Theatre
