Happy Boxing Day

I hope that everyone reading this has had a relaxing Christmas holiday whether this is a day of special meaning and tradition or not.  Tonight, I will be heading over to my friend’s house for her traditional Boxing Day dinner party.
However, before I dwell on today’s events, I wanted to say thank you to my other half for surprising me.  We’ve been together for nearly eleven years now and yesterday in his own awkward way he gathered my family around to let them know that he would be taking me to Paris for my birthday this spring. Although my birthday is not for another few months, in 2010 it will be a milestone birthday and he wanted to celebrate it someplace that he knew had special meaning for me.  Suffice it to say, I am very excited and the planning for this trip will go a long way to distract me from the cold weather this winter.

Our Christmas celebrations really started on Christmas Eve. We had a delicious dinner and friends started dropping by to visit around 9 pm.  The following day was also wonderful.  We spent the day up at my parent’s house in New Hampshire. Our two houseguests who arrived on Wednesday, December 23rd have added so much to our holiday celebrations this year and I was pleased that they had such a nice time with all my family.  Both are young women from other countries and with their own family traditions, but I think that everyone genuinely had a wonderful day.

Merry merry…

Have yourself a Merry Christmas… Enjoy the holidays.

Jingle Bells – Tess Tickle

Sunday I woke to find Boston covered in a thick blanket of snow.  The city was absolutely picture perfect and despite my dislike of the cold, it definitely put me in the holiday spirit.  Considering its just a few days ’til Christmas, a holiday flavored posting seems in order.

I’ve included a clip from one of the numbers from Drag – Camp as Christmas – the drag show I saw at the Sydney Opera House. I only wish we were able to record the entire number from the fabulous drag queen, Tess Tickle. Check out how she holds on to her wig while she jing-jangles her way across the stage.

All About Christmas Eve

On Friday I’m heading to see the Gold Dust Orphans show “All About Christmas Eve” This was an hilarious show that Ryan Landry initially premiered in December 2008, and I initially wrote about this last year in my post, “All about Christmas Eve.” The show spoofs one of the best Bette Davis movies of all times, “All about Eve”.
Through Ryan’s twisted (albiet supremely creative imagination) the show is set in Boston at Christmas time in 1950. The story starts by introducing the audience to an aging actress named Margo Channing (sound familiar?) If you live in the Boston area, check out the play. It is well worth the money and by going you will be supporting local theater.

Santa Speedo Run – Dec. 12th

December 12th is the Santa Speedo Run. This is a fun event to watch (if not fun to partake) in Boston for 10 years.  The race sells out each year (they have a 500 runner limit) and each year the run raises money for local charities; this year the recipients will be Crossroads for Kids and Bottom Line. The race is in good fun in the heart of the BackBay extending slightly more than 1 mile.
The race gets a fair amount of coverage by local news stations as one might imagine. I’ve included a brief clip from NESN’s coverage of the 2008 run below and if you would like to see more, visit The Boston Globe 2008 Santa Speedo Run photographs by linking here.

Boxing Day

Yesterday, December 26th was Boxing Day, and a close friend originally from Manchester, U.K. who now calls Boston her home, hosted an intimate dinner party in honor of the holiday. Boxing Day is a ‘bank holiday’ in the U.K. and is widely celebrated in many Commonwealth Nations (e.g. Canada, Australia, etc…)
I’m not sure when Boxing Day became an official banking holiday but my friend told me that it was traditionally observed by the wealthy in England to provide gifts to the less fortunate.

However, now most people celebrate with friends or shop for post-holiday sales. My friend used the occassion this year to host a fun dinner party complete with a competitive game of Twister. The fact that our bellies were full and more empty bottles of wine than I’m willing to admit were strewn through out her apartment meant the game only lasted two or three spins before someone would fall and knock everyone over. I vaguely remember falling but have a very sore spot on my knee to remind me should I forget that part of the evening. I’m hoping that this dinner party becomes a holiday tradition my friend wants to repeat. It was a wonderful introduction to the holiday and a great way to celebrate Boxing Day.

Merry Christmas

Wishing all a happy and peaceful Christmas holiday filled with pleasant surprises and laughs to share with someone special.

I love the holidays

The Christmas holiday is fast approaching and today is really the last day of work I have until the new year. I am so excited that I will have the next 12 days off it makes me forget how freezing cold it is here in Boston right now and want to dance.

However, since it is well documented that I have no rhythym, I’ll let the guys from Brasil in this video do all the dancing for me. We both seem to share a sense of excitement and contentment at the moment – they are just more expressive and better at showing this through dance.

You can see scores of Brasilians doing this and variations of this dance on YouTube if you type in the search feature, “Cueca Funk”. This particular video which was posted on YouTube more than a year ago has had more than 800,000 hits. I can see why… eat your heart out Dancing with the Stars.

This video was also recently posted on a blog I enjoy reading, Wicked Gay Blog, entitled “Parar relembrar porque amamos o Brasil” which translates to “to remember why we love Brasil”… enough said.

9th Annual Santa Speedo Run a Success

I have been reading several local blogs to find pictures from this year’s Santa Speedo Run in Boston. As usual Boston.com posted a bunch of pictures which you can view here, but the Loaded Gun has included pictures from two friends. I know it is bad form to pilfer without properly crediting your source so I’ve lifted the appropriate text from the Loaded Gun blog and hope that they don’t mind.

As written on Loaded Gun, “Click here for Marciela’s revealing Flickr photostream and here for Derek Lumpkin’s pics from the event. Also, click here for a video giving the, um, naked truth exposing all of those “Philly Boys” who make the trek to Boston for charity.”

I had intended to go down to Boylston Street to see the runners but I was not able to get there in time for the race and will have to wait until next year.

Santa Speedo Run 2008 – December 13th

This Saturday, December 13th the 9th annual Santa Speedo Run will take place to benefit Cradles to Crayons, a local charity that provides basic necessities to children. Each year this 1+ mile race raises money for a worthwhile charity as well as a few eyebrows as several hundred men and women run in little more than their speedos down the frigid streets of Boston. This year the forecast indicates the weather will be sunny but with temperatures expected in the 20s it will definitely be a tough run for many people.

This run has taken off quite literally and is now done in several other cities. Check to see if your city hosts their own Santa Speedo Run and slip on your suit.

I’ve included a video from YouTube of last year’s Santa Speedo Run in Boston.

*Thanks to Made in Brasil for the picture…

All About Christmas Eve

Last month I mentioned that the Gold Dust Orphans would be performing “All About Christmas Eve” in December.

The show opened last weekend while I was still in Brasil, and the reviews have been great. Louise Kennedy of The Boston Globe loved the play – you can read her review here.

I am going to see the show tomorrow (Friday) with several friends and would encourage anyone in the Boston area to check it out. Tickets are affordable and remain available.

All About Christmas Eve – New Ryan Landry Play

The Gold Dust Orphans announced that the holiday show this year will be “All About Christmas Eve”. Spoofing one of the best Bette Davis movies of all times.

The e-mail announcing the new show describes the program as set in Boston at Christmas time in 1950. The story starts by introducing the audience to an aging actress named Margo Channing… Well you get the story. It will be hard to out-do his summer hit Whizzin’ which played both here in Boston and in Provincetown, but there is plenty of material based on the movie “All about Eve” and I have high hopes. I’ll definitely be at the front of the line when the show hits “The Ramrod Performing Arts Center” at Machine at 154 Boylston Street in the Fenway.

Show Dates: December 5th – January 3rd with performances on Friday and Saturday nights only.

Tickets: $30 for general seating, cash at the door. Or $28 if purchased online at: http://www.theatermania.com. Dial 1-866-811-4111 for more on Theatermania.

Christmas Hangover

Today I came back to the office after being out for the past few days to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

The sheer gluttony I showed overeating at nearly every meal the past couple of days is sickening. Suffering from chronic food coma, I have come back to the office seeking solace from my refrigerator which has so much food it could feed an entire African village.

Merry Christmas

We hosted our first Christmas Eve dinner party tonight. The company was excellent, and I could not have been more pleased with how delicious everything turned out. If there was a criticism it was that we purchased far too much meat and fish. No doubt most of the salmon will be tossed and we will be eating pork loin for the rest of the week.

In honor of the Christmas holiday, I thought I would end tonight’s blog entry with an excerpt from one of my favorite holiday tales…

…The Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood
puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came
without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and
puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he
hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store?
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?

MERRY CHRISTMAS / FELIZ NATAL

Visit with Nana in the hospital

My grandmother – Nana – suffered a stroke in February and her health in recent months has been sliding. For weeks my mother has been indicating that Nana has been having trouble focusing and not always been ‘present’. I had not seen my grandmother since I visited her in mid-October. At that time, she looked weak but was still very much aware of her surroundings so when I was told she had suffered another mild stroke earlier this week and had been admited to the hospital, I decided to call in sick and pay her a surprise visit.

The 20 minute drive into the suburbs looked like a winter wonderland and provided me time to contemplate what I would say when I saw her. I was concerned that due to the stroke or medications she might not be alert, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that nothing was further from the truth. We had a wonderful conversation reminscing of stories from the past, talking about family members and the current holiday season.

At times the conversation was tinged with sadness, and it made me realize how very aware she was /is of her mortality. When sadness would enter her voice, I would acknowledge what she said and let her know I shared her sentiments, but I did not let her dwell on the moment or forget about how lucky we both were to have our family so close (both in proximity and emotionally). That was what our morning together was like; conversations about nothing in particular and enjoying our moment alone together. If I noticed she was sad, I would use my humor or wit to lift both our spirits.

However, when it was time to leave, I could not help but notice that the vivacious grandmother I knew most of my life has in recent years seen her spark dim. My grandfather passing away a decade ago followed by an accident a couple years ago that resulted in her taking a bad fall and now most recently her faltering health has changed the grandmother I have known most of my life. Today’s visit made me long to be back in my grandmother’s house like when I was a child. My memories of those years bring me tremendous comfort, and I will continue to wrap them around me like a thick blanket to ward off the cold feeling I had when I turned my back to leave her room in the hospital earlier today.
