Fenway Health Men’s Event

Mens EventIn a little more than two weeks, on Saturday, March 9th, Fenway Health will host it’s annual fundraiser, The Men’s Event.  This black tie event gathers more than 1,300 gay, transgender and bisexual men and their friends and supporters for a night of dinner and dancing.

This year’s award recipient will be Marc Solomon who is perhaps best known for his work as executive director of MassEquality.  While there he led the campaign to defeat two constitutional amendments in the first freedom to marry state in the nation (Massachusetts), beating back attacks by the Catholic Church, President George W. Bush, Gov. Mitt Romney, and the right-wing anti-gay industry.

Will you be attending this or the Women’s Event later this year?  You may purchase tickets to this year’s event here.

Spirit Magazine LGBT networking night in Boston

Spirit Magazine Networking NightBoston Spirit magazine will host their 6th Annual LGBT Executive Networking Night on Thursday, March 7th at the Boston Marriott Copley Place from 6-9pm. Last year’s event was attended by more than 1,300 local LGBT corporate professionals, making it the largest LGBT business event in New England.

I’ve attended these each year and candidly I find the event is more of an opportunity to connect with friends and neighbors rather than doing any true networking, but I’m sure there are many who have parlayed the evening into follow up meetings and it certainly is always a great evening.

Note that this year there is a $10 admission fee to attend, and one must RSVP.

Where the gays are

gay flagLast week Gallup released findings on the percentage of U.S. adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT).

Mainstream media and many gay blogs posted the findings, but I wanted to make a few of my own observations. Gallup found nationally, 3.5% of the population self-identify as LGBT.  Not surprising, 7 of the 10 states and D.C. with the highest LGBT population are among the most liberal in the country. Conversely, 6 of the 10 states with the lowest percentage are among the most conservative in the country. What I draw from this is many likely remain closeted in those most conservative areas of our country and while the LGBT population is not currently anywhere near 10% it would be higher in a more accepting society.

For those who find themselves focused on LGBT issues like DOMA and Marriage Equality, this news must certainly be heartening. I cannot think of another minority group who represents such a small fraction of the total population in the US that has fostered so much change in the last 30 years. Think about the advancements in reshaping perceptions about what it means to be gay, how we’ve been at the forefront for sexual health regarding candid discussions around safe sex and AIDS research, and lastly think of the legal obstacles we’ve overcome.  It is in no small part due to the work done by our community and our ability to work with allies who come in the form of family and friends too.

You may view all the results and read more about this on Gallup’s site here.

First love

I first saw this video on Towleroad back in mid January when they featured it.  I was tempted to post it on my blog then, but thought it might be better to share today on Valentine’s Day. I’m sure there are many who will roll their eyes at the romantic cliche this video wholeheartedly embraces, but I find it touching and hope everyone might find this sort of happiness in their life.

The men of The W Vieques

Men of W ViequesFor those who also follow me on Twitter, you would have received intermittent commentary and images that included everything from the spectacular ocean views to the equally spectacular men who caught my eye.  To be fair, most guests did not bear any resemblance to my two favorites — appropriately referred to on Twitter as #SexyMarriedGuy (top left) and #HandsomeStraightGuy (top right), but that was fine because I would’ve developed a complex faster than a 13 year old can recite lyrics to Justin Bieber’s song As long as you love me if everyone there looked like this.

Which are you partial to – #SexyMarriedGuy or #HandsomeStraightGuy?

Space is limited for this event and there is a small registration fee, but take heart that you will be able to sample wine, beer, and spirits, as well as platters of meats from The Salty Pig.  Proceeds raised from this Sunday evening will go to benefit the Point Foundation – which empowers promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society.

David Pocock

David PocockEarlier this week David over at WickedGayBlog posted a series of photographs of this extremely handsome Australian rugby player, David Pocock.  In all fairness, David has posted this handsome jock before, but I wanted to give the post a shout out since you may be unaware of this very handsome heterosexual LGBT ally who recently made news when he told the media he would not marry until all Australian couples could legally marry.  Like what you see? Check out all the photos that David posted on WGB.

As they say in Australia, Good On Ya David Pocock.
