Temptation Tuesday

Right about now I really start to struggle with my New Year’s resolutions to make healthier choices. Dry January is officially over, and the winter is here for a few more months. I thought this photo of Joe Andrews might be the temptation you (and I) need to stick with our resolutions.

Gay for Good Boston volunteering events

Each month G4G Boston organizes a variety of volunteering opportunities for LGBTQ+ community members and their friends.

The Boston chapter is particularly active and provides an opportunity to meet people and socialize while volunteering. It’s a great way to give back and meet some wonderful people. Vintage gay

It is the middle of winter here in Boston so these beach photos from what looks like the 1950s, makes me really miss the summer and spending lazy days at the beach with Sergio.

Playland, one Boston’s most notorious queer bars, is now a movie – but when will it show in Boston

Boston’s Playland Café first opened in The Great Depression (in 1937). The space became one of Boston’s most notorious queer bars, known for attracting a diverse clientele from all over the city. It would close 60+ years later in 1998 after it lost its entertainment license. The debut film by Georden West, an Emerson University graduate, is creating a lot of buzz and will premiere tomorrow at the Rotterdam’s International Film Festival.

Hopefully this film will make its way back across the Atlantic and have a screening here in Boston. I’ll be certain to share more when I learn of a confirmed date.

The film, Playland, is set up as a series of dreamlike interactions capturing moments over the bars 60+ years from the bar’s cooks, waiters, bartenders and drag performers, starting in the the late 1930s and running through the mid-’90s, building narrative with each additional story. West’s use of archival footage of the bar and its surrounding neighborhood, Boston’s Red Light district called the Combat Zone, adds nostalgia, recalling a time when Boston was far less affluent and a much more gritty city.

Get away for a special Valentine’s weekend in Provincetown

I know that many people do not care for Valentine’s Day, but I am not one of those people. As a general rule, frivilous holidays are my favorite variety of holiday, and as a romantic at heart, I’ve always enjoyed Valentine’s Day. However, I know the holiday can be a great source of stress for many so I wanted to share the idea of planning a weekend away to Provincetown.

Below I’ve shared the events planned at the Crown & Anchor this Valentine’s Weekend followed by some personal suggestions for couples who may be interested in visiting Provincetown but who are looking for quieter alternatives on how they can spend time together in Provincetown over Valentine’s weekend.

This Valentine’s Day celebrate love, lust and everything in between at The Crown & Anchor. The entertainment complex has fully embraced the holiday and has programming on Friday and Saturday ranging from talent shows and cabaret to underwear parties and romantic dinners. For more information about these events visit, onlyatthecrown.com.

9:00 pm Desserts with João Santos at The Dive Bar

Saturday, February 11
7:00 pm Dall’Italia Con Amore (From Italy with Love)
5-course Prix Fixe Italian Dinner with wine pairings for $150

7:30 pm My __ Valentine, Comedy at the Crown
at the Wave Bar | $25 general admission

9:00 pm Tunnel of Love, a Valentine’s Day Queer Formal
at The Paramount Club | $5 advance/$10 door

9:00 pm Jon Richardson at the piano at The Dive Bar

Provincetown is very quiet in February, but it can make for a romantic weekend getaway. If you feel like The Crown & Anchor may be too busy for your liking call around around. Many Inns will be closed but many remain open and their nightly rates are significantly less than if you book in the summer.

Other ideas on ways to spend a romantic weekend in Provincetown include:

Friday, February 10
Check-in at your B&B / Inn
Pre-dinner cocktail in front of the fireplace at Shipwreck Lounge
Dinner reservations somewhere cozy & quiet (your choice)
Check out a cabaret show after dinner or head back to your Inn

Saturday, February 11
Snuggle up with breakfast in bed for two
Head to Provincetown Art Assoc & Musuem
or
Head to Waters Edge Cinema for a Matinee & Makeout session
Dinner reservations (again your choice but HMU if you need help)
Karaoke at Pilgrim House or Party at the Crown

Sunday, February 12
Pack up and checkout
Go to PB Boulangerie in Welfleet
for coffee & croissant before you drive home

Temptation Tuesday

Anyone who may have seen Smiley or Merli on Netflix will recognize Carlos Cuevas immediately. The distractingly handsome, young Spanish actor plays a hopeless romantic bartender working in Barcelona in the Netflix series Smiley and he plays a bisexual philosophy student (also in Barcelona) in Merli.

I watched both series and was enchanted by both his good looks and the characters he plays. The first, Smiley is more of a romantic comedy whereas Merli is more about the life and struggles of Carlos and a small group of students he befriends. Both are worth watching.
