Largest flashmob evah…

To paraphrase Oprah… “That is so cool.” Watch the largest flash mob evah (pardon the Boston accent). The BEP’s helped kick off Oprah’s 2009 season with the largest flash mob ever. Oprah’s expressions are priceless.

Million dollar bill

Last night I was at the bachelor auction at Club Cafe to raise money for the Boston FLAG football league and the Harbor to the Bay Ride. This video was played later in the night and it made me think about the last time I heard this song which I’ll blog about next week.

Enjoy the campy video interpretation of the Whitney Houston song.

Support your local theater and artists

Ministry of Pleasure blog recently referenced one of my favorite musicals of all-time, Avenue Q. It is no longer on Broadway but continues to tour, and although seeing a broadway show is not quite the same as supporting your local theater scene – I still hope it inspires you to purchase tickets to a local play or musical.

What you want to do?

I’ve seen this song popping up on a handful of blogs and now I can’t get the catchy hooks from the chorus out of my head. I assume a video is forthcoming from Nelly Furtado so if you like keep an eye out on her fan page. Beware the song is catchy and you may end up humming it all day long like I’ve been doing.

Free stuff to do in Boston this weekend

I’ve been busy this week working in NYC, but I wanted to post some really cool (and free) activities that are happening in my neighborhood this weekend. The weather is expected to be full of sun with highs in the low 80s Friday and Saturday. Sunday appears to be a bit cooler, but still nice. If you are in the area, plan on checking out one of these events.

Music to your ears The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival concludes Saturday, September 25th with a free outdoor festival on several stages in the South End.

Art for your soul South End Open Studios is Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm. Open Studios brings together more than 250 artists exhibiting their work in their studios. The website includes a map showing where participating artist studios are located. You can link here for directions.

Food for your stomach Saint John the Baptist on Union Park Street in the South End between Shawmut and Washington Street is hosting their annual Grecian festival. Friday 6pm – 10pm / Saturday 12pm – 10pm / Sunday 12pm – 8pm.

Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival (Sept. 15 – 25th)

Yesterday the 10th annual Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival kicked off. This year’s festival pays tribute to the music and culture of New Orleans. The 10-day event culminates a week from this Saturday (Sept 25) with a free outdoor festival on three stages that stretches over six blocks in my neighborhood, The South End. Last year’s event drew over 80,000, so put the date in your calendar and if you’re a jazz enthusiast check out their website for events this weekend.

Red Bull Art in Motion (Saturday 4:30 – 9:00pm)

Hard to describe and fascinating to watch. Check out this free event coming to Boston Saturday afternoon down at Government Center. Looks very cool and is certain to draw a lively crowd.

Brazilian funk

Considering the responses I received from my last post, I thought I would stick with the Brazilian theme and include these 6 teenagers. I initially posted this video back in December 2008, in my entry I love the holidays.

Check out this funny 2-minute video entitled “Cueca Funk”. I have a bit of a crush on the guy in the royal blue boxers on the left. FYI – Cueca is Portuguese for underwear.

Sunday’s guilty pleasure: Cazwell

Massachusetts native, Cazwell, is getting a lot of attention with gay bloggers. His video “Meet me at the ice cream truck” received more than 600,000 hits in its first 7-days. And with nearly every gay blogger posting the YouTube clip, the number of views will certainly continue to climb quickly. You can watch or download the video by linking here.

BTW – Should anyone be looking for me, I’ll be out by the ice cream truck looking for Cazwell and his crew.

Bellagio fountain – Las Vegas

Sergio has been playing with the Microsoft video editing tool that came with his new Dell and I think he’s done a great job overlaying some rather dramatic music to video he took on his last visit to Las Vegas.  It takes a minute or two to download if you don’t have a great internet connection, but check it out.

Music: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana’s – O Fortuna

Here comes the rain

I’m seeing a lot of posts on blogs that I read with videos from 80s bands lately so I’ve decided to hop on the bandwagon and have posted this video from the 80s glam / punk band, The Cult.  I’ve taken the metaphor literally today since thunder showers are predicted off and on through out the afternoon.

What 80s bands or songs have you been listening to recently?

Lady Gaga Medley

I first posted the Sam Tsui cover of Don’t Stop Believing back in September 2009; a recent posting of this video on a blog I read indicates that it now has more than 9,000,000 views (amazing).  I really love the cover, but I fell head over heals for his Michael Jackson Medley which I posted later in the year.  After a quick visit to YouTube tonight I thought I’d post his Lady Gaga Medley which is not as creative as the MJ video, but I think he’s amazingly talented and I’m a big fan of Ms. Gaga so I could not resist. Enjoy the video.

Also, something I did not realize initially is that Sam is backed up by Kurt Hugo Schneider on these clips and he too deserves accolades for his part in the making of these videos which so many enjoy. If you select the link I’ve included for Kurt it will bring you out to his channel on YouTube where you can hear Sam’s version of “For Good” (featuring Nick Pitera) from the musical Wicked.

One night in heaven – M People

This band = Pride for me. Perhaps it was the fact that I had never heard of the band until I went to gay bars. What song or band says “Pride” to you?

Gaga about Glee

I love this show. Who would have ever thought a musical drama about high school would be so successful. Wow, the scene with Kurt’s Dad and Finn was the most emotionally surprising I can remember ever seeing on television. If you are a fan and missed the show, you can check it out on hulu.com.
Here is a video of Lady Gaga – the muse of tonight’s show.

Free stuff to do in Boston this weekend

The obvious choice this weekend is the annual EarthFest concert that will occur on Saturday, May 22nd at the Hatch Shell.  More than 125,000 people are expected to attend the concert hosted by Radio 92.9 FM.  Even the event is quite green with a free bike-valet program available to encourage people to leave their cars at home. The music line up this year includes Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms, Crash Kings, and Marcy Playground.

If the idea of spending quality time with 125,000+ people does not sound appealing, invite a friend or two to come over to your place (oh yeah, suggest they bring a 6-pack) and watch the Celtics play the Magic game, time: 8:30PM.

My first concert: The GoGo’s

Today at the gym I suffered a major flashback when I heard the early 80s girl-band, the Go Go’s playing.  This “New Wave” band from L.A. has a soft spot in my heart because they were the first legitimate concert I attended.

When I was in 8th grade I went to see the Go Go’s perform at “Concerts on the Common” in Boston with my two friends Tom and Brian (incidentally, I’m still friends with these guys). I could not find any videos from shows in Boston, but the one below is how I remember them back when I saw them in 1983.

Who did you see at your first concert and where was it?
