New England native and pop star, JoJo, is back and she’s smoking hot in her new music video. Are you hearing this out at the clubs? It’s practically begging for a remix. Who will be the first to do this for me?
JANET JACKSON Tribute Night: A Grown & Sexy Affair
Looking for something fun to do tonight? Check out Controversyupstairs at Machine in the Fenway. The evening will include a loving tribute to Ms. Jackson by Teashaboo, Endego & Karizma, while one of my favorite DJs, Begbick, plays from Janet’s impressive catalog of music.
While there is no dress code, grown and sexy attire is strongly suggested. The Facebook event page asks “come dressed for our red carpet photo booth.” and all club kids know you always do as the DJ asks.
Upstairs at Machine | 1254 Boylston St. in the Fenway | 10pm – 2am
Just to get you in the mood, I’ve included one of my all time favorite songs from Ms. Jackson. This late 80s hit seems appropriate considering her absence from the public. Welcome back Janet – I’ve missed you too.
Madonna is in Boston tonight with her Rebel Heart tour. She is and has been one of my favorite entertainers ever since I first heard her in the early 1980s. She was a role model, trendsetter and provocateur and I loved her instantly. I’m not at her show tonight but I hope that everyone attending has a great time. I’ve opted to include this vintage clip of Madonna from her Like A Virgin Tour. The medley even includes a nod to Michael Jackson’s Beat It.
Mix 104.1 FM hosts their annual free fall concert this weekend, MixFest 2015.
The MixFest 2015 line up this year includes: Rob Thomas (frontman of Matchbox Twenty); he is almost certain to also play his solo hit from Santana’s Supernatural album, “Smooth”; Third Eye Blind probably best known for their hit “Semi-Charmed Life”; Mass-native, Rachel Platten; Vance Joy; and Andy Grammer.
MixFest 2015 will take place rain or shine, at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. Gates will open at noon, and the music will start at about 2 p.m.
Last year’s mancandy friendly video seems like a nice post for you on a Saturday evening. I hope you are enjoying the long Labor Day Weekend if you are in the US.
A little bit of Broadway comes to Provincetown to help kick off Carnival Week. You can check out the very talented Tony and Grammy award winning Billy Porter at his Provincetown debut, starting Sunday night.
Below watch the talented Billy Porter in the studio with Cyndi Lauper recording Kinky Boots song, The Sex Is In The Heel. For more information or to purchase tickets to one of his three shows at the Paramount Theatre on August 16, 17, and 18th, link here.
On Wednesday night a group of us went to go see Well Strung perform at the Ptown Art House. This year’s show, Summer Lovin, didn’t disappoint. They played, Chelsea’s Mom, which you can watch below, but my favorite song was their rendition of Summer Lovin, which quickly becomes Ptown Lovin.
If you cannot get to Provincetown, you can see them today (July 25th) at Rehoboth Beach for one show only and you can check out their tour dates here.
Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant and Music Club in Davis Square will close in early 2016 after operating for nearly 50 years so its owner can convert the 3,900-square-foot space into a multi-story building. Johnny D’s surprising announcement comes on the heels of T.T. the Bear’s Place which will close later this week, after more than 40 years in Cambridge.
While I’ve not been to Johnny D’s in years, I loved their weekend brunch and viewed the place as a permanent fixture for that neighborhood. It is sad to see another quirky venue closing. Places like Johnny D’s has not only served to provide a stage for big names, but it also was a venue for many local acts. For the sake of Boston’s live music scene, I hope this is not the start of a trend.
The Boston Globe has a more detailed story about the pending closure, here.
Mark your calendars because starting on Thursday, July 23rd is Boston’s third annual Summer Arts Walk. Come down to Newbury Street from 5-8 PM and visit participating art galleries. Well Strung is a talented quartet out of NYC who spend their summers in Provincetown performing at the Ptown Art House. This summer they tweaked the melody of Fountains of Wayne’s 2003 hit Stacy’s Mom to show their support for Hillary Clinton in their song Chelsea’s Mom.
If you’ve not heard this yet, check it out. The quartet was able to perform and meet Hillary when she visited Provincetown this past weekend for a fundraiser. Well done – Well Strung.
Since it is July 4th I thought I’d share the 1991 version of our national anthem from Whitney Houston. I hope you are having a great 4th of July if you celebrate the holiday.
I first wrote about this back in April, but I wanted to remind everyone that later this week the city of Boston in conjunction with Together Boston will host their second annual Donna Summer Roller Disco in Government Center on Friday, June 19th. Last years party was a blast but the lines to get onto the rink were crazy long so this is one party where it pays to be early otherwise you may end up spending most of your time in line.
Date: Friday, June 19th
Time: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Where: Boston City Hall / Gov’t Center
Here are a few photos from last year’s inaugural Donna Summer Roller Disco.
Provincetown has amassed an amazing collection of nightly live performances for the summer of 2015. Tried and true talents like Varla Jean Merman and Well Strung are back with new shows at the Art House on Commercial Street, while Ryan Landry and The Gold Dust Orphans are back with one of their funniest productions ever and of course Ms. Richfield 1981 is at The Crown & Anchor.
In addition to Ptown regulars, big names are coming to perform so if you have plans to visit, try to order tickets ahead of time to see a show while you are there. Tickets to most shows sell quickly since venues are tiny. Here is a partial list of just some of the special performances and 2015 summer shows you can expect to find when you arrive in Provincetown this year.
