Vintage ‘Tube

Can you believe this video that introduced the world to Susan Boyle is now more than 5 years old? Time flies but I still remember being astounded. The obvious lesson – don’t judge a book by its cover. Probably a good lesson for everyone heading out to the clubs tonight.

I want WorldPride to come to Boston

WorldPride Toronto 2014WorldPride – organized by InterPride, promotes LGBT issues globally through parades, festivals and other cultural activities. The event is hosted every five years and the first celebration was held in Rome in 2000.  The second WorldPride was hosted in 2006 in Jerusalem followed by London in 2012 and now this year in Toronto.

I’d love to see Boston make a concerted bid to host a future WorldPride.  We have the history, the capacity and an organized LGBT community.  Does anyone know if Boston has ever stepped forward to bid on being  a host city?  I’ve included the Toronto bid video they submitted back in 2009 to host 2014 WorldPride; it would be fairly easy to make a more impressive video- I was underwhelmed by this submission considering how cool Toronto is.

Vintage ‘Tube

Not quite a Vintage ‘Tube clip but in honor of Boston Pride I thought I’d share a video compilation of 2013 Boston Pride.

Have a great evening.

Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig at Tonys 2014

If you missed the Tonys this past Sunday, you missed a great show. Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig singing ‘Sugar Daddy’ just might have been my absolute favorite moment.  Check out the clip.

Wambura Mitaru performs in Back Bay tomorrow

Wambura Berklee
Wednesday, June 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Boston Public Library
700 Boylston Street, Boston  (view map)

Do you like soul, R&B and jazz?  You might want to check out Wambura Mitaru, a young and passionate singer and song writer from Nairobi, Kenya who attends Berklee College of Music. She has a beautiful voice and will be performing for free Wednesday evening.  Stop by and check out this brilliant singer / song writer then go grab a drink with friends in the Back Bay.

Postmodern Jukebox covers No Diggity

I’ve been regularly featuring Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox clips because I love how he reworks modern songs into popular styles from past decades.

Check out their latest, a cover of No Diggity with Ariana Savalas singing the 90s Blackstreet song  much like Jessica Rabbit might have at the  Patty Cake Lounge.

Tell me what you think. I actually prefer this to the original.

Tony Awards tonight at 8PM

Broadway, Tony's, I’m not a fan of most award shows.  Once the red carpet is over, I find them tedious and fraught with actors inexperienced performing in front of a live audience and / or musicians incapable of singing live.  With the exception of seeing a gaffe – John Travolta introducing “Adeem Azel” at the Oscars or Kendall Jenner’s pathetic attempt to read from her cue card at the Billboard Music Awards – I find them a bore.

However, I always LOVE the Tony’s. I know it is a cliche to have a gay man raving about Broadway, but this show entertains every year because Broadway stars have impeccable comedic timing, they are comfortable performing in front of a live audience, and most of them can sing and dance so be sure not to miss The Tony’s tonight – I promise that you’ll love it.

Vintage ‘Tube

Catherine Tate is brilliant in this hilarious video that has garnered more than 1.5 million views since it was released back in 2008.

Have a great Saturday night.

First Friday tonight

First Friday from 5-9 PM

Come to 450 Harrison Ave. to meet local artists and view their work from 5-9PM tonight. The First Friday of each month more than 60 artists open their studios in the 450 Harrison building.

Local galleries also support First Fridays by remaining open like, Boston Sculptor’s Gallery at 486 Harrison Avenue.  So take advantage of the beautiful weather; come out to see and support our local art scene.

Vintage ‘Tube

While this isn’t all that old, it is so funny I couldn’t help but share it again. I’m sure this will make you laugh as well, so enjoy this week’s Vintage ‘Tube and have a great Saturday night.

I need me a serfboard

drunk in love As much as I like Beyonce, I feel like this guy might make a more more interesting video.

It also makes me curious if I’ll see any of these Speedos in Ptown this summer.  If you’re not understanding the reference, feel free to enjoy Drunk in Love.

Much thanks to Seduced by the New for initially sharing this photograph.

Virgin Island: Todd Sanfield and Kevin McDermott

Kevin McDermottVirgin Island looks like a beautiful book of nude photographs by Kevin McDermott of model, recent graduate and underwear entrepreneur, Todd Sanfield. Please take note that the book’s promo video is mildly erotic (like all of Todd’s photos) and contains nudity.

The book is filled with both color and black & white images of Todd Sanfield and the island. While I’ve yet to see the book you can order your own copy at virginislandbook.com.

DIY Fitness: November Project

I first wrote about the November Project in early 2013.  Started by Brogan Graham and Bojan Mnadaric, they have created a grassroots fitness movement that provides everyone an affordable alternative to gym memberships by hosting free early morning workouts three times a week in Boston.  Over the past year, the November Project has spread to 17 cities.  Their message is clear:  Fitness should be fun, it is better with a team and all you need to do is show up.

While it might be a tough sell to get up early in the morning during the bitter winter months for some outdoor training, now that the weather is more agreeable (at least in theory) perhaps you’d like to learn more about this very social group that champions personal responsibility for one’s fitness and health.  More about The November Project – including times and locations of their workouts – can be found here, november-project.com.

BTW – The next workout is tomorrow. Set your alarm clock. Details here.

National Republican Party needs to take cues from Charlie Baker

While I’m undecided on who I will vote for Governor, I thought it would be interesting to share this video that Republican candidate, Charlie Baker, released earlier this month. Charlie is a long-time supporter of LGBT rights, and I like the fact that he shows one can be a Republican and comfortable discussing / supporting LGBT rights.

It can often seem like the Republican Party has a personal vendetta against the LGBT community. That more than anything has probably contributed to my deep distrust of the party of Lincoln. Charlie’s video shows just how far the National Republican Party needs to come – I certainly hope they start to follow his lead.  Much thanks to David at WGB for initially sharing this video.
