The Normal Heart on HBO at 9PM

AIDS

The AIDS crisis had become a lightening rod issue for the Gay community by the mid-80s; just as I was coming to grips with my own sexuality. The response from the Reagan Administration, the community I lived and popular culture probably did more to shape my attitudes of social justice, the role of government and community than any other single event in my life. It also started what would be an intensely personal and difficult internal debate about religion that I would fixate on for another 10-12 years. I’ll miss the premiere tonight but plan on watching the HBO production.

About The Normal Heart: Originally written as a play by Larry Kramer, The Normal Heart focuses on the rise of the HIVAIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, the gay Jewish-American founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group.

Do you remember this 2010 YouTube video of a 15 year old who joined Michael Buble on stage to sing “Feeling Good”?  I loved it then and I still love it today.

Have a great Saturday evening.

The Theater Offensive climACTS! Bold

This is the second year I’ve attended The Theater Offensive (TTO) annual fundraiser and celebration, climACTS!  TTO celebrated their 25th Anniversary by throwing a fantastically fun party and acknowledging Tony Award-winning star, Billy Porter, by presenting him with their  OUT on the Edge Award.

TTO works to present the diversity of the LGBT community through art to help break through personal isolation, challenges and status quo.   If you’ve never attended one of their programs, check out this video then like their Facebook Page and attend an upcoming TTO event.

You may have missed this hilarious YouTube video, “Gay Scientists Isolate Christian Gene” from May 2007, but I loved it when I first saw it and I bet you will love it too.

Have a great Saturday night.

If Pitbull’s song “Timber” was released in the 1950s it might have sounded something like this

Back in March I shared this retro take on Beyonce’s Drunk In Love, performed by Cristina Gatti.  Here is another in that same series of remaking modern hits with a retro sound.  The Tee Tones remake Pitbull’s “Timber” by putting a 1950’s spin on the cover.

Turkish Airlines starts nonstop service to Istanbul

Roundtrip nonstop service from Boston’s Logan Airport to Istanbul Turkey started today.  This city is definitely on my bucket list to visit and with introductory roundtrip fares starting at $799 it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility, but sadly it won’t happen this year.

What cities would you like to see Boston have a nonstop flight to that Logan doesn’t currently service?

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Birthday MomI wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, my sister Elizabeth, my sister-in-law Ashley and all the other wonderful women I know who have taken on the toughest job I can think of, motherhood.

Fortunately, I don’t suffer from the same “mother” issues Albert Brooks does in this 1990s movie. Must be because I have a fabulous Mom.

This was the first flash mob video I recall seeing.  It has accumulated more than 29,000,000 views since it was posted back in March 2009.

The flash mob comprised more than 200 dancers, performing a version of “Do Re Mi” in the Central Station of Antwerp on a busy Monday morning on March 23, 2009, enthralling nearly everyone in the station.

Do you remember this 2008 video of weather man, Justin Mosely? Poor guy had the fright of his life while the camera was rolling and gave a lot of us a good laugh at his expense. I hope he is good these days and in a cleaner studio that is roach-free.

Have a great Saturday night.

TWC

Are you looking to connect with a friendly group?  Want to mix things up and make more friends who are open to going out, trying new places and possibly planning a weekend or two away? Boston’s very own The Welcoming Committee (TWC) has now expanded into Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. This Friday, TWC, will host their monthly, Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB) event, where they take over a traditionally straight venue and fill it with members looking to have fun and share a few laughs.

Like The Welcoming Committee’s Facebook Page to be among the first to learn where this Friday’s Guerrilla Queer Bar will take place in Boston, Philly and Washington, D.C.

dinnerfest 2014

Nearly 90 local restaurants participated in this year’s dinnerfest. The annual event, which was held this past Sunday to raise money for Victory Programs and the Boston Living Center (BLC), was a success. According to an email sent to attendees on Monday this year’s celebration (marking the 25th anniversary of the BLC) set a new fund raising record.

Congratulations to the hard working staff and volunteers who worked so diligently to make Sunday’s event such a great success.

Do you remember this 2008 video of 29 year old Valentina Hasan, a contestant in the second season of the Bulgarian show “Music Idol”, who gave this memorable performance of Mariah Carey’s song “Without you” in fake English? YouTube calls this video “Ken Lee”.

Have a great Saturday night.

The Theater OffensiveEarlier this month I wrote about The Theater Offensive’s fundraiser, climACTS! BOLD. The event now takes place in less than a month at the Wilbur Theater on May 19th, and I wanted to encourage supporters of this great organization to mark the date and consider attending.  This year’s special guest is musician and Broadway star, Billy Porter, currently playing the Kinky Boots role of Lola on Broadway.

Last year The Theater Offensive’s party theme “Unbound” featured gay rapper/singer, Cazwell, and drag sensation, Sherry Vine.  Check out all the fun from last year’s event.

Electial dysfunction

Long-shot candidate J.D. Winteregg, a Tea Party-oriented primary challenger to Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is running a web ad that is inspired by erectile dysfunction TV commercials. I doubt I agree with any Tea Party-oriented candidate, but I love this guy’s sense of humor, and it may go down as the funniest election ad I’ve ever seen.

Boner Bonus points to Mr. Winteregg for the play on words with Speaker Boehner’s last name.  I’m sure the writers of SNL are kicking themselves for not thinking of this first.
