Off to NYC for the day tomorrow. Fingers crossed that there are no delays getting there or returning home. In honor of my pending trip, I thought I’d post this video. I’m assuming most of the people who read my blog have many fond memories of this song. I know I do.
Growing up in Boston has afforded me the opportunity to see nearly any musical act I’d like. Pop stars of all kinds at some point tour the US and a date (or dates) in Boston are almost always included. Kylie Minogue was an exception to this – that is until last night when her Aphrodite tour came to Boston. Ms Minogue started her North American tour earlier in the week in Montreal, but Boston was / is the first US city and she wasted no time acknowledging that to the crowds delight. However, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself…For those from outside the US, you may find it hard to believe, but Kylie Minogue is still a musician with very little name recognition. If she is known at all it would be more as a 1-hit wonder despite having a couple of hits here in the US (notably The loco-motion, Spinning around and Can’t get you out of my head). The exception to this, would be with the gay community which seems to know nearly every song she’s released, and every word to those songs. Kylie often stopped singing during her songs to let the crowd which was 80-90% gay men (a conservative estimate on my part) sing along to the songs. She plays several notable covers among my favorite was There must be an angel by the Eurythmics (but there are other gems included through out that both surprised and added to the show). If you’d like to see her set list for this tour you can check that out here. The crowd was already whipped into a frenzy by the time Kylie stepped on stage, but the energy level never really dipped or dropped at least not from where I was standing (some 10 rows back from the stage). Thank you Kylie for coming to Boston – I certainly hope you’ll pay us a visit again. Included below are a few more pictures from the show as well as a video of a song I’m sure you’ll recognize. And finally, just a teaser of what you can expect if you are lucky enough to see Kylie on her US tour. This is from her Boston performance on Friday, April 29th.
Shot in the South End and over at dBar its a cute homage to Ms. Britney Spears. I have to admit I feel lucky to be in a city with so many handsome guys.
Think its difficult to be gay today? Watch PBS “American Experience: Stonewall Uprising”, it is a sobering documentary on Gay life in the 1960s.
American Experience: Stonewall Uprising When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28, 1969, the street erupted into violent protests that lasted for the next six days. The Stonewall riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.
Josey is both easy on the eyes and does an impressive acoustic cover of Britney Spears “I Wanna Go”… Damn the kid can whistle. You can follow Josey on Twitter here, JoseyGreenwell.
Cazwell is not likely to ever win a Grammy, but he does make entertaining videos and his latest song “Get My Money Back” is no exception (esp. after the 1:45 mark). This kid from Worcester and his cast of twinks have made another funny, sexy video. If you have not seen it check it out.
You can also check out his equally catchy / visually entertaining summer hit, Ice Cream Truck.
Oh my… Air New Zealand has a long history of creating inventive safety videos to ensure their passengers are paying attention. The latest incarnation includes Richard Simmons in a clip entitled, Mile High Madness
Do you remember this Sarah Silverman / Matt Damon video? I thought this was brilliant. Jimmy Kimmel (Sarah’s boyfriend at the time) showed his wit by quickly creating his own video, I’m f*cking Ben Affleck, which was equally funny.
If you’ve never watched the video – no fears this is the edited version. If you want, you can watch the uncensored version here.
Towleroad blog is reporting Lady Gaga has nixed her deal with Target citing the company’s decision in 2010 to support the anti-gay, Republican politician as the reason for its dissolution.
Target has issued the following statement:“We were very surprised and disappointed by the statements made by Lady Gaga’s organization related to her partnership with Target. Target remains committed to the LGBT community as demonstrated by our contributions to various LGBT organizations, our recently established Policy Committee to review our political giving and our respectful, inclusive workplace environment.”
Gaga has consistently used her celebrity status to ask her fans to support GLBT rights including the elimination of DOMA, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and support for same sex marriage. In the past she’s issued videos showing her calling her representatives in Congrees and urged her fans to do the same.
By virtue of entering talks with Target and walking away citing Target’s past political contributions she has successfully raised the issue again; much to the dismay of Target executives who tried to do damage control when the story first broke. I’d like to see Gaga work with Target (and maybe she will in the near future), but I’m also happy that Target’s political contributions from 2010 have not been forgotten.
Gaga using her fame and speaking to fans asking Congress to repeal DADT.
Last week I first wrote about the Taste of the South End which benefits the AIDS Action Committee, and the event did not disappoint. Although there were no beads or parades to commemorate Fat Tuesday, nearly all who attended left a bit fatter than when they first arrived. And how could you blame them? With 40+ restaurants, wineries, beers and cocktails all tempting the tastebuds it was a food lover’s delight.
Restaurants new to the neighborhood like The Gallows and Noche kept pace with veteran establishments like Mistral and Stella. There were some noticeable absences, which will lead me to ask “Why?” on my next visit to these restaurants. You can see the full list of participants on the Taste website. Support these restaurants and thank them for their participation.
If you were unable to attend the festivities, you can check out this 2-minute video, which shows you some of the tempting treats cooked up for attendees. Again, sincere thanks to all the cooks and volunteers who made this a fantastic event.
The Boston Foodie also has a nice write up with more pictures from the event which you can check out by linking here.
Blog buddy, Alan from AlanIligan referenced a recent post from Dan over at DanNation, which I wanted to also share. According to IMDB, Chris Salvatore is a graduate of Berklee School of Music in the BackBay. Who knew?
In addition to the local connection to Boston, he’s also damn handsome and has a great voice. His latest YouTube video of Lady Gaga’s song, Born This Way is a great interpretation.
I am an uncle three times over and the little monsters you see above are (from left to right) Jack, Abby and Austin. Periodically, we arrange for a sleep over to spend more time together. My sister and brother-in-law had tickets to take the boys to see Mary Poppins, which is currently at the Boston Opera House. So the entire family drove down last night to have a sleep over to make the most out of coming into Boston.
Last night consisted of a game of Uno (for the record Austin won), and today we spent a few hours at the Museum of Science. The two boys, Mom and Dad went to see Ms. Poppins this afternoon. Abby who is too young to sit through the show stayed at home with us and we watched a few episodes of Seasame Street.
After sitting through the entire show, the boys in particular had some pent up energy so we had an impromptu dance party where all three ran around my apartment shaking their little derrieres and grooving to the music before heading in the minivan for their one hour ride back home.
I’ve edited the dance-a-thon down to a minute of gyrations and claps. Drat! After publishing this I realized that I meant to type Starring: Jack, Austin & Abby – not “staring”. I hate it when I make mistakes like that!
Is it just me or doesn’t this seem like it should not be legal? With more than 60″ of snowfall in Boston so far this winter, trying to clear space in the city is not easy. However, this contraption which rapidly melts snow in this parking lot quickly drains through the city sewers and into Boston harbor. Is that really legal?
Watch my quick video and let me know what you think.
