Last week, Sergio and I attended our first live theater performance since late 2019. The SpeakEasy Stage Company’s first production in front of a live audience is the drama The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp. The play premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2018, and opened on Broadway in 2019, and was nominated for six 2020 Tony Awards.

The 90-minute play (no intermission) opens with a monologue by Bella Baird, a tenured, creative writing professor at Yale who is a loner and prefers the company of her books to people. The audience is quickly introduced to the only other character in the play, a Freshman named Christopher.
The play centers around the unlikely relationship between Bella and Christopher. Their riveting and intense dialog is brilliantly delivered by both actors. The dialog is sprinkled with humor (e.g. Bella’s retelling of a one-night stand). But even these funny moments are tinged with an itensity and loneliness, which is a theme that runs through the play.
Sergio and I both really liked the play and encourage you to see it and let us know what you think. However, don’t take our word that the play is excellent and worth seeing. Both The Boston Globe and WBUR give rave reviews. Go see this production before it closes on Saturday, October 16th.
I normally take my coffee black, but I think I’d like to start taking it with Diego Rodriguez Doig. Unsure about the drink he has in front of him but the extra cup in front would work just fine for me. Have a great day and enjoy the weekend.

This photo comes from the now defunct GayTwogether blog on Typepad. I love how dapper these two look as they pose looking off to their right. Any thoughts on when this may have been taken based on their clothing and hairstyle?
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Tis the season to scare the crap out of oneself. While I’m no expert on this sort of thing, each year I pull together a post that shares information about haunted houses in the area. Full disclaimer – I’ve not attended these locations so share your comments on the best haunted houses in the area.
Below is a the listing of haunted houses as well as a number of ‘activities’ for visiting Salem, MA this month.

Few cities or towns in the world embrace the Halloween holiday like Salem, MA. For those who have never visited this town in October, I would highly recommend it. When I was in my 20s a friend of mine had an apartment overlooking the Salem Common and I’d go to his annual Halloween party. They remain some of my favorite memories.Visiting Salem? Check out the following:
Voodoo and Vampires & Ghosts Walking Tour
Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery: A horror museum
Chambers of Terror
HYSTERIA: Haunts & Horrors
“Festival of the Dead” Psychic Fair and Witches Market
Salem Witch Trial Museum
Salem Ghost Tour
Hopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up one or two of your own. Leave a funny caption in the comment section, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

Back in March, I shared that the Boston gay bar, The Eagle, had officially closed. If you happened to walk by the space last week you would’ve seen it was being cleared out. It appears that a handsome, young couple have decided to reopen the space as a bar.
Fortunate timing allowed me a brief meeting outside the bar with the couple who were excited about reopening the space as a bar. I was not able to get details, but they indicated they are targeting an opening for early 2022.
My guess is the space will not reopen as a gay bar but the location makes it an ideal space. The loss of bars like Stella, Tremont 647 and Sister Sorel presents an opportunity for this space to become an ‘honorary’ gay bar and it is my hope that the newly reimagined space becomes a favorite destination for our community – time will tell. Stay tuned.

Those of you who travel to Provincetown will likely recognize Kohi Coffee Company which is tucked away next to Cafe Heaven on Commercial Street and at street level at Spindler’s in the East End. The tiny coffee shop has recently expanded and opened in The Revolution Hotel. The photo shared above was posted on the coffee company’s Instagram at the start of this month.
This is their newest location in Boston (they previously opened in Brighton and downtown Boston). The location includes a walk-up window for ordering and take-out on Berkeley Street, which yhou can also see in the photograph. If you’ve never tried their coffee or visited The Revolution Hotel, now is your chance.
