Saturday morning coffee

male torso, absI 100% approve of  this shirtless distraction’s choice of enjoying a nice French Press. No disrespect but from a taste and environmental perspecive I never got into having my coffee in pods from machines like Keurig. I love the smell of making my coffee and the satisfaction of taking that first sip.

The History Project’s Queer fiascos

Have you lived through a queer fiasco? Did an ex show up somewhere they shouldn’t have, like next to you on a Pride float? Did you get the wrong address to the best party of the decade? Did you trip and fall off the stage of your favorite gay bar in front of your crush?

There are so many stories to tell so the History Project has teamed up with  SpeakOUT Boston and they are brewing up an online storytelling event and fundraiser to relive and remember LGBTQ+ stories. The theme is “Queer Fiascos” which can be interpreted in multiple ways. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m. and get your tickets here!

Do you have a story you’d like to share? Email Joan from The History Project at info@historyproject.org or Ellyn from SpeakOUT Boston at (ellyn@speakoutboston.org) for more details.

All proceeds generated via Eventbrite will support SpeakOUT Boston and The History Project

Furry Friday

handsome, hairy, muscles, jocksI assume these two guys are fixated on intermittent fasting or are obsessed with keto so I can envy their physique, but if I were to learn they regularly eat a bag of chips and jar of salsa, I might just hate them. Does this make me a bad person?

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out.

Weekend on the brain

New England has been enjoying a beautiful stretch of weather and the forecast for this weekend appears as if it will continue the streak of sunny skies and warm temperatures so (of course) I have the weekend on the brain.

Do you have any plans this weekend? How do you plan to recharge and make the most of this bizarre – socially distant – summer?

Vintage gay

This week’s photo comes from the Gods and Foolish Grandeur blog.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. FlyFoto is an Instagram account of a friend of mine who is an architect by trade but a true artist and supporter of the arts. This Boston-based photographer takes provocative photos of men, showing that one need not have a ripped body to exude sex appeal or be able to turn heads.

FlyFoto’s Instagram account includes a small fraction of his years of photographing men here in Boston and elswhere.

“I’m right over here”

How are you doing?

Although my blog’s focus is on LGBTQ life in Boston and Provincetown and is filled with visuals – specifically of the handsome male variety, I can’t help but pause momentarily to check-in and ask, “How are you doing?”

I ask in part because I’ve been struggling and not finding much of a respite. Pressures from work compounded by a pandemic, a steady stream of videos of police brutality, and belligerent posturing from our Divider-in-Chief has taken a toll on me and my usually cheery disposition. I figured if someone who looks like me and has led a fairly charmed life thus far is having a rough go, it’s hard to imagine the mental frame of mind for marginalized communities, those who are alone, without a strong support system or have a history of struggling with emotions and feelings of depression and anxiety.

I’d encourage everyone to reach out to friends and family to talk and check-in. In reaching out, I’ve found out that several close connections are struggling. In this age of group Zoom chats, texts and social media posting, it is good to remember that a one-on-one phone conversation can be both healing and helpful so to borrow a line from this 80s AT&T commercial, reach out and touch someone.

For anyone feeling alone or isolated, remember there are a lot of really wonderful people out there and organizations like the Samaritans with trained volunteers standing by should you want to talk but feel like you have nobody to turn to at this time.

US Supreme Court rules Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ workers

Affordable Care Act

Did you know that prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling it was legal to fire someone because they are gay or transgender in 28 states? Well no more… Earlier today the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) surprised pretty much everyone when conservatives Chief Justice John Roberts and Neil Gorsuch joined the court’s four liberal justices in the majority, 6 to 3 vote, affirming the language of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

As a result of this ruling, there are potential implications for addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and seeking to have this applied to other Federal civil rights legislation.  According to CNN, this ruling may be as significant as the Court’s 2015 ruling, recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. You can read more about the ruling and the implication, here.

Boston Red Sox: LGBTQ ally

Today is the last day of Boston Pride Week 2020 so I wanted to share an excellent article from Out Sports blog that details how the Boston Red Sox went from the last team in MLB to integrate to being one of the biggest champions of LGBTQ Pride.

This year the Boston Red Sox were planning their Pride Night this season to coincide with Boston Pride’s 50-year anniversary and how amazing would that have been? I’ve really enjoyed the annual Pride celebration at Fenway and each year it gets better so I can only imagine what might have been this year.

As of last season, all but two MLB teams hosted a Pride event. MLB’s decision to name Billy Bean as its Ambassador for Inclusion has helped change the culture around the league, but the Red Sox have done more than just host a Pride Night. The Fenway Sports Group has donated to LGBT causes around the city, including a $200,000 pledge to Fenway Health, the region’s largest LGBTQ clinic and resource center. But there is so much more to this story so read the full article on Out Sports, How the Red Sox, who were the last team to integrate, became champions of LGBTQ Pride.
