Quarantine cocktails to get through your week

After 3+ weeks of  practicing some form of social distancing and self-quarantining, many of us have turned to video chat to try and stay connected with friends and family. Last week I joined my first virtual cocktail meet up and it was more fun than I would’ve expected.

My liquor cabinet doesn’t include most of the ingredients necessary for the six suggested cocktails but fortunately, the handsome bartender makes my favorite, a  gin & tonic. My preferred gin for a G&T is Bar Hill Gin. I like it so much I wrote about it here in 2015, Classic take on Gin & Tonic with Barr Hill Gin. What is your drink of choice these days?

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

Who / What Am I?

With pointed fangs I sit and wait;
With piercing force I crunch out fate;
Grabbing victims, proclaiming might;
Physically joining with a single bite.

Glow Disco Fitness home workout from the 80s

If you’re like me, you’re not quite disciplined enough to stick to a home work out routine so it is with a bit of cheek that I am sharing this funny video from Nathan a.k.a. “Glow Disco Fitness” home workout routine straight out of the 1980s.

Perhaps this will inspire you to workout at home or if you are like me, maybe pour yourself a drink and watch Nathan in his crop top and short shorts.

Vintage gay

Arthur Laurents, Tom HatcherArthur Laurents (July 14, 1917 – May 5, 2011) shown above on the right was an American playwright, stage director and screenwriter best known for his work on Broadway, including  – West Side StoryGypsy, and La Cage Aux Folles.  Tom Hatcher (August 24, 1929 – October 26, 2006) shown on the left was an aspiring actor whom Gore Vidal suggested Arthur Laurents seek out at the Beverly Hills men’s clothing store Hatcher was managing at the time. The couple remained together for 52 years until Hatcher’s death on October 26, 2006.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

FDA eases blood donation policy targeting gay men (sort of)

Thursday April 2nd the U.S. government (sort of) eased restrictions that previously forbid gay men and several other groups from making blood donations.  The FDA’s policy change is not absolute, meaning the guidance for male donors who would have been deferred for having sex with another man has changed the recommended deferral period from 12 months to 3 months. For sexually active gay men, which describes every gay man I know – this change although welcome still falls short. You can read the details about the new policy which aims to allow tens of thousands more Americans to give blood here.

The change in policy is due to canceled blood drives, that have decimated donations to the American Red Cross and other nonprofits that provide most of the blood supply in the country.

For those of you who are not sexually active gay men, consider contacting your local American Red Cross. To learn more and or to schedule a blood donation at Boston’s American Red Cross donation center call 1-800-RED CROSS or go online to schedule a time to donate, here.

This week on Instagram: undarius

Sergio and I had the chance to spend several nights this past December at Undarius Hotel in Uruguay. The 10-room hotel, which is owned and run by Mario (below in the jacuzzi) and Fran, is for men only and about a 5 minute walk to a gorgeous gay beach about 15 minutes outside of Punta del Este. I wrote a bit about our time in Uruguay and Undarius this past January, here.

The hotel’s account features photos of the property, some of the delicious food that they cook for guests and parties they host onsite. If you are contemplating a visit to South America, I would recommend considering this destination which is a 75-minute drive from the Montevideo International airport. Feel free to shoot me an email or leave a comment if you have any questions.
