The title of this blog post was my response to Mark Bruso’s recent
He points out how centrally located the South End is as well as its proximity to major interchanges. Bruso further asserts that the South End is home to a highly skilled workforce (more so than any other downtown neighborhood) with “79% more healthcare workers and 52% more management professionals than the next best neighborhood”. Moreover, the neighborhood is projected to see a boom in office market space, that is expected to double over the next five years due to three developments: 80 East Berkeley St, 321 Harrison Ave and the huge BMC Exchange that will replace Boston’s Flower Market.
Unlike the near universal criticism leveled at the Seaport, which is defined by buildings best described as unimaginative, glass boxes with few public spaces – the South End maintains a distinctive look, known for its 19th century Victorian Bowfronts, Renaissance Revival, Italianate and French Second Empire row houses as well as beautiful parks and converted brick mills housing artists, small businesses and residences. But his most compelling argument in my mind really is the livability and quality of that life. He points out that this tiny downtown neighborhood is home to more than 120 eateries and 25 bars – making it a mecca for young professionals.
I agree with all of Bruso’s assertions and hope that if development does indeed take off the City will use those appealing traits outlined in his article to insist that developers make greater investment in building affordable housing (in this community), space for small businesses to thrive and better public transport.

Black Lamb Boston opened in the space formerly occupied by Stephi’s on Tremont and is now serving brunch on both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10:00 AM.
The “new kid on the block” status combined with the reputation of culinary couple Heather and Colin Lynch ensures that Black Lamb will be hard to get a seat most evenings, but when we visited for an early Saturday brunch we had the space almost entirely to ourselves. The biggest differences to the space are the color scheme, artwork and converting the private dining room in the back into a cool little raw bar and dining space.
The brunch menu is a tad limited (especially if you love to have a lot of egg-options) but it does have some very interesting items and we wasted no time ordering something savory and something sweet.
We started with the Potato Rosti, which has a consistency of a latke and is served with smoked salmon, sour cream and dill piled atop. It was really delicious and something I would definitely have again.
The French Toast served with strawberries and whipped cream photographs nicely but wasn’t served with enough maple syrup so initially it tasted a bit dry but we rectified that quickly, asking for a bit more syrup which the brioche soaked up nicely. This is definitely a good option for anyone who likes something sweet in the morning.
The only glitch in the dining experience was the timing of breakfast items which was a surprise considering there were so few tables at that time of the morning. However, to the restaurant’s credit they rectified the situation quickly and one can chalk this up to being part of the team’s learning curve.
BosGuy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars, Good.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
Lerone Clarke-Oliver lives in London, is a PR professional loves Mariah Carey and is gay. More importantly he appears to post regularly and while most of his photos are casual solo pics like the one above, he does also clean up quite nice.
His comment in the post below and the many playful photos he shares makes me think Lerone is probably quite funny and fun to be around. I recommend checking out what he’s been up to of late by adding Lerone to your feed.

Next week Chris Marchant and his band mates from Well Strung will be performing in Provincetown for the week. You can get your tickets (if any remain) here. Well Strung has been a fixture in Ptown for years so in honor of their return, I’m using this goofy photo of Chris as this week’s “Caption this Photo”. Hopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up a caption or two of your own. Leave a witty or funny caption as a comment for this post, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.
“You want me to do what?”
Anyone who knows Sergio or me, know that we regularly frequent Boston Chops South End on Washington Street. A big reason is because of the staff who are a tight-knit group of fun professionals who make their bar is one of the best places to meet up with friends for a drink in the neighborhood.
One of my favorite bartenders in Boston is Kiko. His flamboyance, wit and charm is a draw. While Boston Chops is not a gay bar – it is a place where the 30-something and 40-something gay men of Boston can often be found meeting for cocktails or grabbing a dinner, which only adds to the appeal when Kiko is holding court (a.k.a. tending bar).
Next time you go into Boston Chops congratulate Kiko for the feature in The Boston Globe and take a moment to read the full article, Getting Salty with Frank ‘Kiko’ Dutra of Boston Chops.
P.S. Kiko – I agree with you. To this day I still miss Pho Republique and I love the colorful regulars like Judy who frequent Boston Chops SE.
