Boston’s Santa Speedo Run is Saturday, Dec. 9th

If you find yourself in Back Bay tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon you may want to head over to Boylston Street to see the 18th annual SSR (Santa Speedo Run). Scheduled to take place at 1PM, runners will line up at the intersection of Boylston and Gloucester Street (in front of the Hynes).

This annual tradition which has inspired more than a dozen similar runs in cities through out North America and Europe starts outside of Lir at 903 Boylston Street. Come down to check out all the activity. After a slight warm up the middle of this week it looks like tomorrow’s weather could be quite chilly so the runners can use all the support they can get.

Furry Friday

Furry FridaySince Boston’s Santa Speedo Run is tomorrow, I thought I’d inject this photo from a run a couple of years ago. When this photo was taken they had yet to run but were working up the liquid courage to run through the freezing streets of Boston for the 1 mile charity run.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

This time of year is filled with songs
That through the world are heard.
And this classic holiday melody
Is titled with just two words.

The first syllable of Word #1
Is a sound you might make when down.
The second syllable of this word
Might come from a cotton gown.

The second word can be found
On a board with sixty-four squares.
Four of these appear at the start
And all of them look like mares.

Vintage gay

gay couple on the beach

I plucked this photo from the Kiki Beach IG account and aside from the two names scribbled on the bottom of the photo I don’t know much. I would venture a guess that this might date back to the 1940s simply by the look of the bathing suits Jeffrion and Felix are wearing. Anyone else able to venture a guess?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? TIME Person of the Year: The Silence Breakers

Against the backdrop of allegations from women ranging from Hollywood to the US Congress and virtually everywhere in between, sexual harassment and misconduct in the workplace in particular has galvanized women (and men) to speak up this year in a way I’ve not seen since the Clarence Thomas hearings in the early 1990s.

Harvey Weinstein, US Rep John Conyers, US Sen Al Franken, Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose, Roy Moore, President Trump and more have all been accused of sexual misconduct and harassment as have many others, and TIME’s decision to talk about this is genius. By shining the spotlight on a topic that is more often whispered about, I hope this encourages more people to step forward, and share their story.

Let me put this year’s TIME Person of the Year cover in perspective….

I moved on her like a bitch… I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything… Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.” — Donald J. Trump

Who knows. Perhaps TIME Magazine really did reach out (as Donald Trump claimed last week) about an interview for this year’s Person of the Year cover. He’s an excellent example of why / how sexual harassment exists and is excused.

You can read the full article on TIME at The Silence Breakers.

This week on Instagram: johnmcconnell

 john macconnell

This week I wanted to feature an Instagram account of an artist and graphic designer who lives in New York. His Instagram account is dominated by his artwork which is predominantly male nude portraits.

His work is really beautiful and provides a nice break from photographs when I’m scrolling through my feed. If you really like what you see, you can also check out his website where there is more information about MacConnell’s training and artwork for sale: johnmacconnell.com. I’d love one of the SoWa art galleries here in Boston to feature his work because I’d love to see it in person.

Follow him on Instagram here, instagram.com/johnmacconnell.

Toys for Joys is on Friday

T4J, gay boston

9th Annual Toys for Joys is Friday, December 9th at The Revere Hotel

Get Your Tickets to T4J 2017 – Here

I wanted to give another shout out to one of my personal favorite Boston holiday traditions and encourage anyone who has yet to purchase tickets to this year’s Toys for Joys to plan on joining Sergio and me at this fun event that helps bring presents to under privileged youth in and around Boston.

Toys for Joys, T4J

Unlike most fundraisers you may have attended in the past the event is devoid of rubber chicken dinners, self righteous speeches and people chasing you to donate more money. This celebration now in its ninth year has grown tremendously but remains as festive and social as ever and the newly remodeled space at the Revere Hotel will make this year’s event even better.

The organizers of Toys for Joys (T4J for short) simply ask that in addition to buying your ticket to the event that you purchase 3 gifts: one for tots (3-months to 5 yrs), tweens (6-11 yrs) and teens (12-18yrs). Bring the unwrapped gifts to place under the T4J tree. If your last name begins with A-M you purchase toys for a girl and if your last name begins with N-Z purchase gifts for boys.

For those who do not want to go toy shopping to bring gifts to the event, the T4J organizers have added a new option this year for $250 that includes six gifts (3 for boys and 3 for girls) along with expedited admission. If that is more than your holiday budget will accommodate, no worries there are more affordable (tax deductible) options.

Tom of Finland biopic movie comes to Boston

homoeroticThis past September I wrote about Dome Karukoski’s biopic of artist, Touko Laaksonen, who is best known as “Tom of Finland”. The movie follows Laaksonen from the trenches of WWII and the repressive Finnish society of the 1950s through his struggle to get his work published in California. Eventually Laaksonen’s provocative art was adopted by the gay liberation movement for which his leather-clad drawings served as a defiant emblem.

Boston’s Wicked Queer Film is co-hosting an early screening of Tom of Finland (which opened in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles in October) at Emerson College’s Paramount Theater on Thursday, December 7th, which has been put on by Emerson’s Bright Lights.

CLICK HERE: to see the preview showing of Tom of Finland
Presented by Bright Lights Series at Emerson University

Tickets are free for as long as seats remain available at Paramount Ticket Box.
The screening will take place in the Bright Family Screening Room  at the Paramount located at 559 Washington Street (near Chinatown and DTX T stations). The doors open at 6:30PM.

If you cannot join Wicked Queer at this preview showing, the movie will play at the Kendall Square cinema in Cambridge, starting Friday, December 15th. For showtimes and more details visit the Kendall Square Cinema website.

Holiday gift idea: Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar

Are you and your friends planning a Yankee Swap or Secret Santa? Do you have a friend who is tough to buy for and you can’t spend a lot of money? Why don’t you consider the Warwick Rowers 2018 calendar?

At just under £10 you really only have to worry about ordering it in time to get here before your holiday party or gift swap.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the male rowers at the University of Warwick Boat Club, these men have been creating & selling calendars since 2009. Proceeds raised from the sale of their calendars, videos etc go to

  • Promote positive, inclusive and respectful attitudes towards people of all genders and sexualities through the content that they create
  • Fund university rowing and particularly to make rowing more accessible to a wider number of students
  • Ongoing development of Sport Allies, a registered charity with a mission to promote sport, and particularly team sport, as an inclusive and supportive route to personal growth for everyone

If none of that really matters, it doesn’t hurt that each year the young men are so damn good looking in that ‘guy-next-door’ sort of way. For their more revealing photos you’ll have to check them out online or better yet peruse their many products for sale, here.
